About the property

Experience Detroit like a local in our lovingly renovated home

Do you take the road less traveled? Find beauty in unexpected places? Want to be a part of a real Detroit neighborhood? This may be the place for you. Let’s start from the beginning. One sunny January day in Los Angeles, my fiancée and I (and our mutt, Sebastian) picked up everything and drove to Detroit. Why?! You ask… Well, to be a part of this city’s incredible story, of course! Two years later, we are excited to share that experience with you.

We chose to plant our roots in the North End for many reasons… Its historic character and easy access to the heart of the city. And also because it’s a place where our investment, energy and TLC would have the most impact. North End may not be the prettiest girl at the party, but she’s got character and soul, and represents Detroit’s past, present and future in a way many other downtown neighborhoods do not.

This is one of many forgotten homes, destined for demolition that we saved and gave a new shot at life. To do this, we hire community members who are down on their luck or have trouble finding conventional employment. We even started a non profit to help make sure these guys are getting great training and job opportunities in a skilled trade of their choice. (Ten jobs were created and lives changed in the making of this particular home.) Now, I go on this tangent for a reason, so you’ll understand all that went into the home. It wasn’t shipped in from the suburbs. It didn’t come from a box. She’s old with bones that may creak or stand a little less straight than they used to, but she’s back in action and ready to be loved again.

Downstairs you’ll enjoy the cozy living room with a smart TV, plus the separate sitting room stocked with books and games. In the back you’ll find a fully equipped, eat-in kitchen, and in between you’ll be thankful for the downstairs bathroom and bedroom on those particularly stumble-prone nights… ;) Upstairs offers three more large bedrooms, two with queens and one with two twins. All bedrooms are equipped with ultra comfortable high-density, 10-inch foam mattresses that magically both my fiancée and I have fallen in love with (she prefers firm, while I’d rather sleep on a cloud). Each piece of furniture and item on a shelf has a unique story to tell. We are avid thrifters and estate sale scavengers, and we’ve furnished this home with some of the most delightful of our finds so you can experience a piece of the treasure hunt. If you appreciate vintage style and quirky nick-nacks, we get you. You’ll love it here.

Now let’s talk about Detroit. If you’re visiting then you’ve surely heard a lot about this city. Much of it is true, including the exciting stuff about the incredible transformation underway. And let’s be real, some of the other stuff is true too. If empty houses and vacant lots creep you out, this may not be the spot for you. Our neighborhood in particular, sitting blocks north of the future M1 rail, is bound to experience the transformation in a huge way. Which means it’s got plenty of room to grow, and may never look the same. We choose to cherish it as it is, admiring the tree branch sprouting through a forgotten shop window, finding poetic beauty in the untamed convergence of man and nature. And we hope you will too.

If you’ve read this far, I think we’ll get along great and you’ll probably be very happy here. Say the secret phrase “North End looks nice” in your inquiry and your booking is a lot more likely to be accepted. We’d like to hear why you’re coming and that you understand (and are excited about) where you’ll be staying. If you do all this, we can’t wait to meet you.

Cozy and scary rolled in one

  • 3 of 5

My family and I spent a few days in Detroit and wanted to save a couple dollars by staying in a home instead of three hotel rooms we would need. Rented this property and was excited to save some money and help some people down on their luck. The home is very clean and the beds were very comfortable, that being said we didn't have much of a problem because we we're all guys in town for the auto show. If I brought my wife along, we would have certainly spent twice the money because the ladies would have said no way are they staying at this home. I need to repeat myself by saying we were comfortable and used the home happily. This home is nice and clean but it's a no frills home. The neighborhood was peaceful but downcast, many of the homes in the neighborhood are abandoned. The couple who own the home says exactly what I am saying but never being in an area like this, we were not expecting the scary feeling of the area.

Met our needs

  • 4 of 5

Comfortable beds, hot shower, close to downtown, helpful owner, this house met our needs. The neighborhood looks a little sketchy but we didn't have any issues. Would stay here again if we come back to Detroit.

Plenty of space for my whole family, including kids and pets. Close to downtown. I'd do it again

  • 3 of 5

We had a nice time here, and our needs were met. The kitchen had all we needed to cook. Grocery stores were within minutes. We also had to go buy a suit for the wedding we were there to attend. We found shopping close-by. The wedding itself was on Belle Isle, which was also within minutes. The fenced in yard was great for dogs to play and get some exercise. Neighbors were friendly when my boyfriend walked his dog around the block. The backyard of the house next door does look dumpy, but that didn't affect our stay. There is parking within the fenced yard, but it would be hard to fit two cars in there as stated, and be careful getting in and out. We actually bottomed out and cracked casing on the bottom of my boyfriend's car. I'm only adding this so people can be careful when going in and out of gate. Also there is a nice large picnic table in the backyard to eat or rest on. There was nice artwork on the walls and table books to look at. The place was clean and had what we needed, including soaps and shampoos, etc. I would do it again. It was nice to have room to stay in Detroit with my whole family in one house. I only rated three stars because it's not like the Hilton or something like that, but I knew that up front and it was fine and I believe we saved money by staying together in one house. Thank you Jacob and Kyle.

Really enjoyed staying at the art gallery home.

  • 4 of 5

I personally was impressed how the owners are working on the redevelopment of the community. The home was large enough for our group but quaint enough for privacy. The only thing I suggest is to have more kitchen items such as dish towels and silverware. Otherwise, I recommend others to rent this property when in the Detroit area.

Beautiful artistically done old home

  • 5 of 5

This home has been rejuvenated from top to bottom. They have a modern wood fence around property which was great for parking and since we brought our dogs it let them run free. This house could easily accommodate a much larger group, but it was just my sister and myself so the 4 bedrooms md two baths were more than enough. This was a great place to stay at night and head out for our day excursions. Wifi worked great! Kitchen and bathrooms were modernized and clean. Didn't watch tv, we were too busy experiencing Michigan. Would stay here again if in area. Very good price for how nice the house is!!!

Wonderful and unique place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

I stayed here for a couple nights with 3 other friends (but many many more could have fit). Had to say we all loved our stay. The place is HUGE, clean, secure ( gates, camera, motion alarms) and has basically everything you could ask for. All the while being surrounded by really cool art. The bikes in the basement that are free to use were a very large plus and really enjoyed cruising around on them for a bit. There is a blue tooth speaker that can play out the jams and a roku TV so you can chill out and watch some Netflix. Kitchen has a ton of options to use if you want to cook, make coffee, etc (we didnt). Beds were comfy and clean. The only negative, which is not really a negative, is that there isn't much of anything in walking distance however it's only a very short drive to basically anywhere you want to visit in Detroit. The neighborhood felt perfectly fine and safe. This is a perfect place to stay if you have a large group!! Very convenient, the hosts are friendly and fast responding. I really couldn't ask for a better experience! Totally recommend this place and would absolutely stay again.

Location

Car: recommended

North End provides very easy access to Detroit’s best spots: Downtown, Midtown, Eastern Market, West Village, Cork Town, Hamtramck and more—all in a 10 minute drive or less. Bikes are available and the shops/cafes of New Center are a short ride away. However, it is the Motor City after all so we recommend having a car.

Remember--this is Detroit, not the suburbs, and you can really feel that here. If you’re visiting then you’ve surely heard a lot about this city. Much of it is true, including the exciting stuff about the incredible transformation underway. And let’s be real, some of the other stuff is true too. If empty houses and vacant lots creep you out, this may not be the spot for you.

Our guests appreciate the authenticity and sense of adventure they experience. You will see empty houses and vacant lots sprinkled among well-kept gardens and manicured lawns. You'll stumble upon impromptu barbecues, colorful street art and some eerie remnants of the city's past. The ice cream trucks here offer real soft serve for $1. The people you pass say hi and ask how you are. The urban farm down the street sells fresh produce on Saturdays... My fiancé and I live around the corner. We're proud to be in one of the city's most diverse neighborhoods and happy to show you around. Just ask!
