Though it’s internationally known for the famous annual Grand Slam tennis tournament, there’s far more to Wimbledon than just tennis, strawberries and cream. This usually quiet and peaceful suburb of south west London is home to a range of great shops, restaurants, theatres and parks. The New Wimbledon Theatre is a receiving house that welcomes larger touring plays and musicals whilst the Polka Theatre is one of London’s leading children’s specialist theatres. Take a walk on Wimbledon Common for a breath of fresh air in a large green space or enjoy a guided tour of the history of tennis at the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum, located on the ground of the Championships and open throughout the rest of the year. The Centre Court shopping centre (nothing to do with tennis) houses outlets from many of the best high street names, whilst Wimbledon Village is home to some of the more upmarket boutique shops in the neighbourhood.
For a bite to eat, you’re spoilt for choice in Wimbledon. Try Sticks ‘n’ Sushi for contemporary Japanese cuisine or The White Onion for upmarket gourmet French fine dining. Figli del Vesuvio is a much loved, though fairly new, wood fired pizza joint in the previously industrial area of Summerstown, close to Wimbledon. Enjoy cheap and cheerful pizza expertly cooked by real Italians. Bayee Village is perhaps the area’s most popular Chinese restaurant, serving up a delicious menu of Peking and Szechuan cuisine, often accompanied by live jazz music.
For an afternoon pint or an evening drink, head to The Dog & Fox or The Crooked Billet for a traditional pint. The Old Frizzle is a lovely 19th century themed pub that runs quizzes and live music nights along with a regular menu of delicious classic cocktails. For a sports bar to watch a big game, try The Pod Bar on Wimbledon Broadway or for a classy evening cocktail, Hemingways in Wimbledon Village is the place to go.
South Wimbledon tube is the nearest station to the property, just a 2 minute walk away. This connects you to the Northern line, meaning you can get to iconic London sites in no time at all, such as the infamous London Eye, Buckingham Palace and bustling Oxford Street! Exploring London could hardly be easier.
