Two lovely weeks spent in Dietroserra. The delightful owners live close-by and could not have been more attentive and helpful. Daughter-in-law, Maria, was ever on hand to provide English translation when needed. We felt very welcome.
The website photos accurately depict the property and its rural setting. Tall trees overhang the property’s terrace, providing welcome respite in summer, but in late autumn when the sun is lower, the terrace is mostly in shade, making the interior of the property a little dark. Some extra, directional lighting would be useful in the kitchen/sitting area at times.
For sun-lovers, a separate terrace provides beautiful views across the hillsides to Mount Etna; it’s shared with the other property, but comfortably large. For shade-lovers a lush, grassy area runs between Dietroserra and the shared terrace. Chairs, tables, sunbeds & cushions are plentiful. The swimming pool is of the tank variety which you climb up into, so not at ground level. It’s perfectly serviceable, but bear in mind with younger children.
Furnished traditionally, the property is spotlessly clean, well maintained and well equipped, with lots of little extras thoughtfully provided (dish cloth; pan-scourer; washing-up liquid; initial roll of paper towel; liquid soap; shampoo; shower gel; loo paper; washing machine liquid). On arrival, we were treated to a bottle of wine from the vineyard and next day a delicious homemade cake arrived (thank you again, Signora Gae!). We also found fruit juice & water in the fridge, plus various condiments, olive oil, vinegar.
When buying food, be aware there’s no microwave. We ate in often and found the hob and oven perfectly efficient. Toaster, kettle and filter coffee machine are also provided.
Barking dogs didn’t worry us, but mosquitoes abound in October. Indoors was kept mozzie-free by using buzz plugs 24/7 (we took our own, but several were provided - bring tablets). Sufferers will want to apply lots of repellent or cover up when outside in the evenings.
The location is good for exploring the east coast and volcano area. Viagrande is just 15 mins’ walk away, but note the route is not pedestrian-friendly. With no pavements until you reach town, you’re confined to the hard shoulder, which disappears in places. If you’re visible with light clothing/torch, most drivers will accommodate you, but it’s not for the faint-hearted.
In all, those seeking peace and relaxation in a rural setting will love it!
We had a great stay at this house nestled into a winery at the base of Mt Etna with our toddler. The house was large and clean and worked well for us as a base for a family trip to Sicily. 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms with a small but very functional kitchen and large common area with a large window over looking grape vines. There was also a large deck to sit outside and a pool.
The house is located outside of town but was a quick and easy drive and launch point to get to Etna, town, day trips along the coast etc.
The owners were very helpful both in providing information of items around the area, but also in assisting in booking specific events like cooking classes right at the villa. They were very quick to respond to questions we had.
The property was lovely with fantastic views of Mount Etna. We went with our two daughters who loved the pool and the gardens. The house is really well equipped and spacious and the two bathrooms really suited us and our two daughters.
The owners came to check on us regularly and gave us a delicious chocolate cake which was an unexpected treat. The wifi was very handy and we used the DVD player most days.
As a family of foodies we had no complaints with the kitchen equipment or the outside cooking space. This was one of the best equipped houses we have stayed in Italy.
There is plenty to do closeby. We spent a day at the waterpark and another in search of the locations used in the Godfather which were not too far away. The local town could have done with some more amenities but there are some excellent shops full of local produce.
All round a very enjoyable stay.
We had a very pleasant stay here in April. The front terrace IS as idyllic as it looks in the pictures. Although we didn't require any help, the owners gave us a phone number and kept in contact through email in case we needed anything. They were very welcoming - even leaving a bottle of homemade wine and a delicious orange cake for the stay!
The house is well-equipped. They have an drip-style coffee maker as well as a moka and an electric kettle. We used the kitchen a few times over the course of the week and the washing machine as well. It was a bit too cold for the pool when we visited, but I imagine it's wonderful during summer.
The drawbacks are the same as I have found anywhere else in rural Sicily, but I should at least mention them. There is a gate you must lock/unlock when you leave. There are enough bugs that one can't just leave the door open (though you'll be tempted due to the lovely views). And, as the other April reviewer noted, there were MANY barking dogs every night. I didn't mind the dogs because I had ear plugs. I'll also say that the few times I saw dogs on the road at night, they were not at all aggressive or unfriendly. There is also a very active bird population by the house. Until this trip, I didn't realize how much cuckoo birds actually sound like cuckoo clocks! To be honest, I didn't find them to be a drawback at all.
This is a great house for relaxing or seeing east Sicily. In the immediate area, there are Etna towns, Catania, and the Riviera dei Ciclopi. Within an hour, you can visit Taormina and Siracusa. Sicilian food and wine are excellent, and Viagrande is just far away enough for the biggest tourist centers than you can avoid other tourists if that's your thing. :)
Spacious, clean, well equipped house in a spectacular setting - looking at Mt. Etna. Lots of comfortable outside seating (and pool for later in the season), well equipped kitchen and functional bathrooms, including a washing machine. Good center for exploring Etna, Taormina, etc. Owners were very pleasant and quickly responsive to any questions (not to mention a bottle of their own wine and a delicious cake). Our only issue was with barking dogs every night - both nearby and further away.
We just returned after spending one week in Sicily in this lovely house.
We were so lucky that we found this hidden gem. Already before our Holiday, we have been mailing with the owners and they replied quickly and friendly on all our questions.
The house is set in an ancient vineyard: the wine making seems to have a long tradition in this Family.
There is plenty of space in the property and the holiday house is located in a garden/park on the top of the vineyard. You have your own private terrace/garden and the main garden is also there for you. From the garden you have a fantastic view on the Etna, the surrounding and the coast.
It is really amazing to watch the sun rise from here or in the evening when the last ray of sunlight is painting the Etna in red...
In the garden there is also a swimming pool: you can swim and look at the Etna!
The house is very comfortable, clean, perfectly equipped and just very cosy. There is a huge living room and kitchen in the same room with a big window facing the private terrace. The kitchen is equipped with everything you might need for cooking and enjoying your Food.
There are two bathrooms, of course equipped with towels, hair dryer, but also liquid soap, shampoo, and even washing powder for the washing machine (which was located in the smaller bathroom).
Two bedrooms: one with double bed, the other with two Singles. Plenty of space for your wardrobe.
The only troublemaker were some Miskito in the evening, but we had them also at the beach after sundown. So this seems to be normal in October. The good thing: in the house you have different kind of anti -moskito things (spray, something for the plug socket, candles).
We were also lucky enough to try the wine from the vineyard and it is just delicious.
The Hosts: Gae and Michele are very nice, warm-hearted and welcoming people. We were very lucky that we shortly also met the (almost) whole Family: Maria & Claudio with their kids and Andrea.
We came as guests and we felt like we are leaving as friends.
Dear Gea and Michele: many thanks for your kindness and hospitality!
Hopefully we can come back one day! All the best to you!
