About the property

Wickham House is a circa 1815 stone home in downtown Winchester, VA

Welcome! Wickham House is a circa 1815 stone home at the intersection of Cork & Braddock Streets in the heart of Old Town Winchester. The house is over 200 years old but fully updated. The Loudoun Street walking mall is just yards away.

Upstairs, there are 3 beds in 2 bedrooms (Queen and Twin bed in the Master Bedroom; Full bed in Guest Bedroom). For larger groups, additional sleeping accommodations include a Queen sleeper sofa and a separate large sofa in the Den downstairs, as well as a spacious sofa in the Great Room. The Master Bedroom features a sitting area with a 32” TV as well as a gas fireplace. The Guest Bedroom features back yard access and a 24” TV.

There are 2.5 baths, all recently renovated, including a half bath downstairs and two full baths upstairs (Master bath has a shower; Guest bath has a tub/shower).

Downstairs, the Living Room/Great Room is spacious and light-filled thanks to an array of south-facing Velux windows. The architect-designed open floor plan encompasses a two-story vaulted sitting area for catching up with family and friends; a dining area with seating for 6 guests (8 with table leaves inserted); and a contemporary kitchen featuring Italian cabinetry, Miele appliances, a Boos butcher block and expansive granite countertops.

The Den features comfy sofas, a 60” Sharp Aquos television with Apple TV and a DVD player and a cozy gas fireplace. As noted above, one of the two sofas in this room converts to a Queen bed.

Throughout the house, there is fast wireless internet. Although the house is right downtown, the space is quiet inside thanks to innovative acoustic window panels (by Indow Window). The 2-zone heating and cooling system (gas furnace; central AC) is controlled by Nest thermostats. Other energy-saving environment-friendly features include new Kohler toilets and LED bulbs throughout.

Please enjoy the entire space, exception of the attic, basement and downstairs utility room. Out back, there charcoal and gas grills.

Guests with special needs should be aware that there are several stairways to negotiate, including up to the front door, and the bedrooms are on the second floor.

About John P. Chesson

I live downtown myself and have enjoyed watching the Historic District grow and improve over time. It's a pleasure to see guests discover Winchester, and gratifying to be a small part of the changes that are happening here.

John P. Chesson purchased this house in 2006

Why John P. Chesson chose Old Town

When I moved to Winchester from Charlottesville, I wanted a space downtown that had a combination of the old and the new. This space won me over instantly. I've since worked closely with the architecture/design team (Reader &Swartz) that spearheaded the renovation at Wickham House in the 1990s. They created a beautiful modern floor plan while preserving the historical details the give the space its colonial era charm.

What makes this house unique

Downtown Winchester is all about the Loudoun Street walking mall. The walking mall was recently renovated and has really taken off in recent years. There are a growing number of dining and entertainment options. The Wickham House is walking distance from all of the action.

You're literally about 50 yards from the new 50/50 Taphouse. They have a great selection of beers and unique burgers. Beer lovers may also wish to check out the Alesatian Brewing Company conveniently located upstairs at Roma Wood fired Pizza. Union Jack has a great selection, too. Rounding out the tour/crawl, Escutcheon Brewing Company and Winchester Brew Works are off the mall but in easy striking distance.

If you crave wood-fired pizza, Roma is about halfway up the walking mall. For finer dining, there's the Village Square and Market Bistro. Sushi lovers will appreciate Awabi’s super fresh fare. If you’re a fan of the slider, Snow White Grille is a local favorite, especially late night.

For entertainment in walking distance, there's always something going on at the Bright Box (comedy, music, burlesque). Check the City’s website, especially in summertime, the walking mall hosts the Wine Fest, Oktoberfest, Rally on the Alley, Blues House, among other fests.

It’s a longer walk or a very short drive to the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley. In season, you can tour the Glen Burnie formal and Asian gardens. Don't miss the Virginia State Arboretum (Blandy Experimental Farm). It's a 10 minute drive, open til dusk and free.

Other driving distance destinations include the various vineyards in the area. Valery Hill and James Charles are popular. Farther out, there’s Delaplane and Linden.

Guests bound for Shenandoah University, it's roughly a mile over to campus. Medical professionals, it's roughly the same distance in the opposite direction over to Winchester Medical Center.

Second visit and will return!

  • 5 of 5

This is our second stay at Wickham House and it is the perfect fit for our family. The new sleeper sofa in the library was a great addition. The new seating in the family room was also a nice change. As before, the house is well-stocked, clean and perfectly situated near anything and everything. John is a phone call away and quick to respond. We love walking Old Town and exploring the neighborhoods surrounding the house.

We slept five very comfortably and enjoyed many meals in the kitchen/dining area.

Since our kids are in Winchester, we will surely be back and stay at Wickham house again.

Gorgeous, spacious, eclectic & cozy

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. The entire place is gorgeous with unique decor & has everything you need and then some. My daughters loved the piano & electric keyboard. The kitchen had plenty of cookware, coffee, tea & spices. The sofas in both living rooms are all very comfortable. The central heat works quickly to warm up the whole house. The beds are cozy too. And the bathroom had just about any toiletry one may need. The location to old Winchester is ideal. Loved the modern phone app to unlock the door. John quickly responds to all needs and is one of the coolest guys we’ve ever rented from. We will definitely stay there again.

Perfect Family Gathering Spot

  • 5 of 5

While we only had time for 3 nights (2 full days) the group was in agreement that this was the perfect location and we all plan to return. There were 12 of us (1/2 of the group staying in the house and the others live locally) who gathered for a holiday reunion. The space was perfect for being able to all be seated together in central living area, playing games and dining together. Large countertop/peninsula is ideal for a big spread of food. Home was clean and well-maintained with great location central to all you could want.

This house is lovely! It has all of the comforts one could need and want (and then some), and is in a wonderful location. The owner is equally great. I highly recommend this property to anyone (including families with children) looking for accommodations in Winchester.
