Overview

About the property

Charming , 100-year-old, spacious home on hillside in south-facing peacefu

La Cougouillade is a highly individual, lovingly restored house situated on a hillside above a small hamlet outside the medieval village of Arles-sur-Tech. Facing south towards the mountains, it is flooded with sunlight throughout the year but with plenty of shade in the summer months thanks to the old linden tree and wisteria covering the lovely terrace. The property is in enclosed grounds with a mature garden and a large pool, with an extensive poolside area that is a real sun trap, enjoying magnificent views over the green Pyrenees. Inside the accommodation is very flexible. The spacious living room (60m2) contains a lounge area, with open fire, and dining area. Off this are a reading lounge and a study which can be used as a 5th bedroom if required. The interior was decorated by a French artist, with every room in a different Provencal-style coloured wash. The medieval town of Arles-sur-Tech with shops, restaurants and the ancient Abbey, is 5 minutes drive or 10 minutes walk along the river, and the spa town of Amelie les Bains with Roman Baths is just 10 minutes drive. The beautiful mountain river, Le Tech, where you can swim in summer, in the cold, clear waters, is just down the road. The location is rich in animal and bird life and there are footpaths to be explored from the house in every direction, making this the ideal setting for a relaxing, varied family holiday.

There are extensive opportunities for trips and visits, including easy drives over the mountains to Spain, with beautiful Catalan towns such as Besalu and some of our favourite restaurants, plus many fascinating monuments to the history of the mountain journeys of the Spanish Civil War and Second World War.

The coast with the beautiful towns of Collioure and Banyuls are within 40 minutes drive, and the spectacular Costa Brava can be reached in just over an hour.

Horse riding, forest adventure, cycling...the possibilities are endless!

Flights: Perpignan (45 minutes ) and Gerona (1hr 15 minutes) are the closest airports to the property, where Ryanair has several flights.

You can also choose from Montpellier (Easyjet), Toulouse (BA) and Barcelona (many airlines).

Fabulously spacious, lovely grounds and setting

  • 5 of 5

We were bowled over by the size of the house and first impressions were that it was going to be perfect for our family holiday, with plenty of rooms and private areas, but also homely communal spaces. (Our group comprised of 5 - We are a couple in our thirties, a one year old baby boy and parents/grandparents in their early 60s). We spent a lot of time outside the house, over looking the mountain vista and enjoying the tranquillity, as well as by the pool, which is warmed by the sun through the day, but has a covered BBQ area with seating and a fridge to escape the direct sunlight if needed. The house stayed cool, which provided respite from the heat of the day and during the evenings. Consequently the house was a comfortable temperature for sleeping. The kitchen has lots of cooking equipment and we ate at the house most days, after an enjoyable 'big shop' at Intermarche. La Coug was clean and is well maintained, and it was good to know that there is a washing machine prior to our departure, as this allowed us to pack light, knowing we could wash our messy baby's clothes if necessary! We would love to return to this property with friends, and explore further a field. We visited Amelie and Ceret town centres, but we too busy relaxing to do much more - Until next time! (A bien tot!)

Lovely house

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from a three week stay at La Cougouillade. It's s lovely house; very spacious and airy with a very well equipped kitchen. We enjoyed trying recipes from the excellent cookbooks in the house using all the wonderful produce to be found locally. The pool area is fantastic and very clean - and certainly needed in 35+degrees. And then there is the lovely wisteria covered terrace with welcome shade and views of the mountains.

There is plenty to do in the area: walks up in the hills (we met a wild boar out strolling one evening), pretty mountain villages, Museum of Modern Art in Ceret, tons of markets, and the coast only 40 mins away. The drive up in the mountains to Spain to the restaurant in Tapis was a highlight. Locally Els Simiots in Arles, just a stroll along the river has a small menu but everything we tried was excellent and the service was very friendly.

It was a pleasure dealing with Denise arranging the stay, etc, and Jane and Bernie who look after the property were happy to sort out any little hiccups.

So, a brilliant holiday!

Excellent holiday home in fantastic location

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned from an excellent holiday in La Cougouillade. After a very long days drive, not knowing quite what to expect, we arrived at this lovely house tucked away in the hillside looking out over the Pyrenees. The house itself is rustic and enchanting with lots of space and plenty of beds. The kitchen was great for preparing meals and we loved eating outside together whilst enjoying the fantastic views.

The swimming pool was great - the children loved using it and it was perfect for relaxing around.

The surrounding area was beautiful - we drove up into the mountains and crossed over into Spain and enjoyed a day exploring the medieval town of Carcassone (approx. 1hr 45mins away). We also enjoyed walking down to the river. There were many other things to do and explore in the area but we were very happy just enjoying the house and pool most of the time.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time here and would highly recommend it to anyone wanting a peaceful, relaxing holiday in stunning surroundings. Thank you very much Alison for letting us rent your home!

Excellent Property and location

  • 5 of 5

Had a superb visit. Pool warm enough to swim in and a sun trap for sunbathing! A charming property with lots of quaint character and all the modern requirements as well. Lovely views especially in the morning with the sun streaming in!

The River Tech is 2 minutes walk away and you can head off to Amelie or Arles, 15 minutes walk in either direction along the river.

The kitchen is massive and the garden a good size for BBQ's.

Would recommend a visit!

Steve, Leila and Fifi.
