This is my daughter Isabelle and I, and as you may have noticed, our house is named after her! We live in Cardiff in South Wales, and have spent many, many happy holidays in Foz do Arelho with the rest of our family and friends, it's a place that feels like home from home to us now.
MS K . EDWARDS purchased this villa in 2007
We bought this house because it is big enough to accommodate all of our family and friends, and because it's in such a charming and friendly place. We always feel safe and welcome there, and have come to know many of the locals.
The privacy of this house, with it's own enclosed garden, where we can enjoy the pool and al fresco dining, was one of the things that drew us to it. That, coupled with the fact that you can walk out of the gate and stroll to a number of different places to shop, eat, drink and just watch the world go by, also made this an ideal location. I don't like driving abroad, so that was a big plus for me. Easy access to the beach is also something which makes this place attractive, it's lovely to be able to wander down to the beach any time we fancy it, and the sunsets there are stunning!
A group of us stayed at this villa for a friends birthday, and we had the most wonderful time. The village is so friendly, and everything you need is on the doorstep. We couldn't believe how inexpensive it was in the local bars and restaurants, where else do you get a glass of wine for 1 euro! The owner of the Irish bar went out of his way to cater for our every need, we enjoyed a wonderful champagne breakfast for the birthday itself. It is a place that feels like home from home, you feel welcome there from the moment you arrive. We'll be back!
Wow! The villa is amazing, so much better than the pictures show. We stayed for a week at the end of July with our friends and had a fantastic holiday. There were 4 adults and 5 children ranging in ages from 9-13 years. This was our first villa holiday so we weren't sure what to expect. Kathryn so was helpful in everything that we asked and she even arranged for the villa to be ready earlier in the day as we had early morning flights.
The villa is set in a quiet residential street with the local bakery at the end of the road. In the village theres at least 4 supermarkets which look tiny from the outside but are larger than you imagine and they stocked everything that we needed. We also bought our meat from the local butcher. All the locals were very friendly and we entertained them all week with our poor portugese. They did all speak english, however it was great fun trying to speak portugese and they would try and teach us new words everyday.
We chose not to have a car for our holiday and we had no problems getting everything we needed and the 15 minute stroll to the beach was enjoyable. If you wanted to explore the surrounding area a car would be preferable although there are plenty of buses around.
The villa is well set up, we chose to share all areas of the villa and upstairs was only used for sleeping or chill out time on the sofas. The wifi was an added bonus. There are 2 barbecues and the coals are easily available in the local shops. There are also lots of washing lines, perfect for hanging out the towels after a day at the beach.
The pool isnt heated but the temperature of the water was comfortable enough for everyone to play in it all day. There is a room attached to the villa which is full of pool/beach equipment including an inflatable boat (perfect for the pool), sun umbrellas, lilos, water squirters, balls, body boards etc.
There are a number of restaurants in the villa and a cafe that sells delicious takeaway pizza. Down by the beach there are also a number of restaurants/cafes and we particularly liked 7a which had great food and cocktails for us all whilst we watched the sun setting over the beach. a fantastic hiliday all round and we were very sad to leave, a week wasnt long enough.
This was a great home to stay in for all my family, which included my almost 2 year old grandson. The property was clean and well maintained as well as very spacious. Kathryn was very helpful and gave us plenty of good advice before we arrived. The villa is in a great location, only 5 minutes from the village where we ate great food including great cakes. Helpfully there was a local farmacia as my grandson had a cough and the lady in the chemist was really helpful. We ate in a number of the restaurants both in the village and by the sea. The beaches are fantastic; a 15 minute walk. There is also a lovely cliff side walk which my brother and sister in law enjoyed.
My husband and I visited an old medieval walled city called obidos nearby - 15 minutes in the car - well worth a visit. All in all a fabulous time that I would gladly recommend.
What a fantastic two weeks we enjoyed in Foz! Firstly the accommodation was perfect for our group of 10 - a mix of children and adults, it worked really well having the bedrooms in the downstairs apartment for the baby to sleep at night whilst we either spent time in the spacious lounge/diner/kitchen or sat outside. The pool and outside space was great, the kids wore wetsuits in the pool as it wasn't that warm but it didn't spoil their enjoyment of it at all.
Foz itself is lovely - lots of local restaurants - every meal was lovely and very reasonable. The chicken and rib shop at the end of the road was great for nights in, and the local shop had everything you need - although supermarket in Caldas for big shops was handy (not any cheaper though really). The local fish man who comes daily sold us the most delicious fresh seabream, salmon and sardines. We were truly spoilt for choice. Having some older children who were desperate for wifi the local cafes were very convenient for them and it felt very safe for them to wander down there on their own - just at the end of the road with delicious bread and cakes.
Kathryn was so helpful - I asked lots of questions it being our first holiday with the baby and everything was catered for. The upstairs apartment isn't suitable for small children with the windows but that is made very clear. It made such a difference being able to liaise with Kathryn especially when coming to a place you are not familiar with but she made it a very seamless and painless experience! We would definitely come back to Foz - its a real hidden gem.
Having spent our last few summer holidays in Orlando we decided we fancied a change. I have an 5 month old grandson so we wanted somewhere not too hot or too commercialised. Having done loads of research we came across this property. Right from the outset it just felt right and Kathryn, the owner, was very helpful.
The pictures on here really don't do justice to the property it is much bigger than it looks. The upstairs is slightly bigger but they are both lovely. There were 12 of us but it never felt crowded , with my older daughter and her family using the upper apartment which is completely self contained.
Having been to Florida I was a bit concerned that Foz would be too quiet. And although it is quiet it is absolutely delightful. Everything is clos to hand with 2 supermarkets, Bakery ( mmmm) ,butchers, restaurants and takeaways within a few minutes walk. The locals are great and most pseak good English but are always happy if you try to speak a little Portuguese ,even if it's only hello and thank you.
And it's so cheap. We ate out 7 nights and the biggest bill was €128 for 6 people inc desert and drinks ( so about £85?) . The supermarket prices are cheap too.
The beach is absolutely gorgeous and very big. I'm not a fan of the beach and we generally used the fantastic pool. But it's nice to wander down there ( about 15 min walk) and watch the sunset which is absolutely spectacular.
There's a good bus service and it's worth the 20 min ride to Calas de Raina ( which is quite a big town) to wander the shops, visit a lovely food market or just to grab a coffee and cake at the Cafe in the park which is also beautiful.
The weather we had was great ,high 20's , clear blue skies and great suntans. Humidity is low so it's always comfortable to sit out in but the nights, sometimes, can get a bit chilly.
A few recommendations, Tivholi is just 5 mins walk and it's great , esp the monkfish catalpa ha and the black pork too. Across the road is a little restaurant I can't remember the name of but that's great too. Good takeaway pizza from Central. And if you fancy a 30 min walk down to the Europa restaurant you can have a meal and sit and watch the wonderful sunset. Magical.
By the way, we didn't hire a car and didn't need one. If you want to go exploring go on the bus or get a Taxi.
I highly recommend this villa both for the accommodation and for Foz itself. Unspoilt and the taste of true Portugal.
And once again thanks to Kathryn for her help and advice
This was an ideal villa for our family get-together of seven adults and four young children, aged between 2 years and 8 years.
The spacious layout of the accommodation was perfect, allowing us to enjoy quality time both together and apart.
The children were in the pool every day and enjoyed the use of the really fun water inflatables left by previous guests. The small shallower part of the pool was really useful for the younger ones.
The villa's location is in a quiet side street but usefully close to small shops, restaurants and bars in the delightful and friendly village. It is also a very nice 15 minute walk to the alternative beaches of the lagoon or the ocean.
We all loved our stay here, have no hesitation in recommending it and would definitely consider returning for another holiday.
First of all we were so glad having found a house big enough for the whole group (we took both apartments). Then it was close to the village-centre and in walking-distance to the beach too - great, we thought! But the house itself was even better: we enjoyed our stay! Everything was just fine. The rooms are big, furniture very tastefully and kitchens are very well equipped. For a big group like ours it was fine having two separate apartments with 3 bedrooms, one kitchen and one living room each. So one always finds a quiet place and it never becomes crowded. I would warmly recommend the house to everyone! Thanks Kathryn for the fine organisation - all worked out just perfectly!
The villa is ideally located near all the amenities of Foz village. The huge beach and lagoon are an easy 15-20 minute walk, or 2 min by car. On the lagoon is a water sports centre and safe bathing. There are a number of restaurants e.t.c. in Foz and on the beach & prices are very reasonable. Sea fishing is popular here, & you can also book horse riding at the 'Quinta' in the village. There is top class golf within 25 minutes drive i.e. Praia del Rey and Bom Successo, & nearby you'll find the city of Caldas with a daily market, shops, banks etc. and also the amazing medieval walled town of Obidos with it's beautiful cobbled streets and regular festivals. There are a number of beautiful bays within an easy drive e.g. Sao Martinho and Nazare. Popular surfing beaches are found at Baleal and Peniche, and you can arrange to visit local vineyards. Lisbon is under 1 hour away with regular buses running from Caldas. Other historic sites of interest include Fatima, Sintra, Batalha and Alcobaca.
Golf: The climate in this part of Portugal is cooler than the Algarve, and lends itself to a highly enjoyable golfing experience with top class facilities alongside clear blue skies and a cooling Atlantic breeze.
The two nearest golf courses are the par 72 Bom Sucesso, a championship course designed by Donald Steel and the renowned Praia D’El Rey, a true links course designed by the English course architect Cabell B. Robinson.
Rated thirteenth best course in Europe by Golf World magazine and no.1 in Portugal, Praia D’El Rey has established a reputation amongst golfers as a major golfing destination. It has also recently won 'Portugal's Leading Resort' - World Travel Awards 2008. The Praia D'El Rey Resort also includes a 5* Marriot Hotel and Spa.
Both courses are on the opposite side of the Obidos lagoon, approximately half hours drive away.
