THE NEIGHBORHOOD

Our house, 10-42 Jackson Avenue, Long Island City, NY 11101 is at the hub of a vibrant restaurant district on the East River that is only 5 minutes from Times Square via 7 train subway station right on our corner. Emerging from a historically industrial neighborhood in the 1990s, it was discovered by artists who turned the industrial spaces into workshops and lofts and then by developers who have made it into one of the more fashionable places to rent and buy. One of the safest neighborhoods in all of NYC, our house is protected by three police forces: NYPD (one block away), MTA (the Midtown Tunnel force on the same block), and the NY State Police (who patrol the LIRR station and Gantry Plaza State Park two blocks away). The new 12-acre Gantry Plaza State Park stretches along the East River waterfront with amazing facilities: 3 toddler playgrounds with sprinklers, basketball and handball courts, a sandy beach volley ball courts, a soccer field, restaurants, running and bike paths, fishing piers, and a public library (opening in 2017). From here you can experience the absolute best view of the Manhattan skyline and take the East River Ferry to trendy Williamsburg, the Brooklyn Bridge Park, and midtown/lower Manhattan. This key NYC transportation hub links Manhattan, Brooklyn, The Bronx, Queens, JFK and LaGuardia airports, and Long Island beaches by train, subway, bus, bicycle, and car. Owners will provide detailed neighborhood guide -- including links -- on request.

THE SPACE

Large, sunny, air-conditioned triplex townhouse (built in 2006) with hardwood floors that sleeps 10 in four bedrooms: #1 is a large master bedroom w/ French doors, king bed, electric piano, and master bathroom, #2 is a large room w/ full bed, stationary bike/bench/weights, and small refrigerator, #3 is a small room w/ full bed, and #4 is a small room w/ bunk bed, private sundeck overlooking a small back yard with garden, an outdoor grill, and a half bathroom. The two rooms with full beds share a full bathroom and partial view of the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building. Additional queen size air mattress available if needed. A laundry washer/dryer unit is shared by all.

The large common area offers a full kitchen, dining area, home theater system with 52” plasma cable TV/DVD/Roku/Netflix/Amazon Prime/HBO (and more), Wi-Fi, fireplace, French doors, spinet piano, skylight, elliptical exercise machine, leather sofa and 2 recliner chairs. Original art work by the owners is displayed throughout all rooms. There are chairlifts for disabled and elderly access.

About Carolyn Marx

We are retired musicians and artists whose 2 daughters have left the nest and are now gainfully employed (whew!). Carolyn grew up in New York City and Greg has been here for 44 years. Carolyn is an accomplished artist who has shown in galleries in New York, sings in cabaret shows, and ran her own day care center. Her art work and other original art is displayed throughout the house. Greg is a former business analyst now focused on playing guitar and bass and singing in two bands, has written two novels and slew of poetry.

Why Carolyn Marx chose Long Island City

We redesigned and rebuilt this house from scratch on a property that has been in the family for over 60 years. it was so close to all the cultural opportunities in Manhattan. One subway stop and three minutes to midtown. The subway stop is only 30 feet from our door. With a car, no tolls to midtown, the beaches on Long Island, and both the NYC airports. We designed this building so we could supplement our retirement income once our daughters left home

Toddler park on the corner, playground within two blocks, large riverside Gantry Park with unbeatable direct views of the Manhattan skyline. Perfect Place for NYC Visit

What a wonderful place to stay when visiting NYC. The house was spacious, comfortable, well appointed, clean, and convenient to subway & ferry and easy to get anywhere you might want to go. Gantry park, a short 3 block walk away, has a great view of Manhattan across the East River. One of the great things about this house is the wonderful binder with a wealth of useful information, everything from instructions on the operation of electronics to recommendations on restaurants and tips for subways and ferries. The owner was easy to get in touch with and helpful when we were making plans. I highly recommend this property and I will stay here again if visiting New York.

Great place to stay with friends and family.

Great location, easy to get around and walk to various restaurants. Subway entrance close by. Parking a little tricky as street parking limited but we were able to find parking a couple blocks away which worked great. Lift for older folks getting upstairs was a plus. Would definitely stay there again.

Great Location 1 Stop From Grand Central

Our group of friends needed 4 bedrooms for our 2-night stay in the NYC area, and we were so lucky to get to stay at Carolyn's place. I guess I'd call this a townhouse rather than an apartment. It's VERY roomy, and unlike many VRBO apartments we've rented, it's obvious that owners really live here, at least part-time, which means they've thought of everything. It was especially nice to have plenty of shelves and hooks in the bathrooms so you can lay out all your "stuff" to get ready every morning.

You enter from sidewalk level to a stairway up to the living area. The main (2nd) floor has a huge combo living/dining/kitchen, a half-bath, and a back-of-the-house bedroom with nice little deck overlooking the enclosed courtyard in the middle of the triangle-shaped block. From the living area there's a view of the upper 1/4 of the Empire State Building. Large flat-screen TV with Smart TV, plenty of seating, full kitchen, piano.

Upstairs to the 3rd floor there are 2 bedrooms in front (so expect some traffic noise at night). Both these bedroom windows show upper 1/3 of both Empire State Building and Chrysler Building. Also on 3rd floor there's a full bath in the hall, plus closet with washer/dryer, and a large master bedroom suite in the back with full bath and a small deck above the deck below, overlooking the courtyard. The living area and all bedrooms have air conditioners.

As Carolyn's very complete "user's manual" describes, we found it to be a wonderful, safe, quiet, low-stress neighborhood of FRIENDLY locals, restaurants, pubs, shops, fruit stands, flower stands within a couple of blocks of the house, and it's a very short walk to a park on the East River, with a magnificent Manhattan view. If you like breakfast, check out Dorian Cafe, just a block away at 50th & Vernon.

With a subway station steps from your front door, you're just a 10-minute, $2 ride from the heart of the hustle and bustle of New York City! We were closer to mid-town than most people staying on Manhattan Island! We felt perfectly safe in the subways. We are country folk, not used to subways, but we quickly were traveling all over NYC and enjoying every minute. No problem summoning an Uber, either. They are everywhere!

Overall, I'd describe the apartment not as modern/upscale, but as very comfortable upper-middle-class.

Large space in great location!

Great stay for our group of 4 in large spacious home in great location. Stop for the 7 train was across the street. Easy walk to east river ferry. Plenty of restaurants, shops and bars nearby. Would definitely recommend and stay there again.
