The former capital of the Algarve, Silves, is just 7kms away. Sitting on the banks of the River Arade, Silves is a town steeped in history. Home to an Arab castle, Gothic cathedral and a Medieval bridge, there is plenty to see and do in the town.
Silves is not far from the coast, so you can have the best of both worlds - a place in the country and days at the coast (15-mintue drive). It is also ideally placed for family-fun outings such as water parks (Slide & Splash in Lagoa is only a short drive away), a visit to the zoo (Zoo Lagos isn't far and their 'monkey islands' are great fun to visit) or a day at Algarve Shopping mall at Guia, near Albufeira. (There are couches in the sunshine for those not keen on shopping and a food hall with restaurants and fast food outlets). Another great day out is Zoomarine, again at Guia. Take your swimsuits as there are outdoor pools as well as exhibitions by dolphins, sea lions and birds of prey.
