About the property

2 Bedroom, 1 bath, Bon Secour River, close to Gulf Shores beach & attractions

The Fish Camp cabin is located on the Bon Secour River. The Bon Secour river has historically been a "working" river for shrimp boats and fishermen. Commercial shrimp boats ply the river and use Bon Secour as a base from which they travel all the Gulf of Mexico. The name "Bon Secour" was given the river by French sailing crews who found the river to be a safe haven from storms. The very name means "good anchorage" and "safe harbor." During the Civil War the South used the waters of the river to obtain salt and for years the remnants of the salt pits could still be seen. The Union army recognized the importance of the salt production and mounted a specific attack to destroy the pits. An example of a Southern mansion, "The Swift Cole House " is located within one mile of the fish camp and is available for touring.

The property includes a long dock on the river with two covered sitting areas. Boat dockage is available for guests. A boat launch is at the end of the street. The cabin is part of an original fish camp, consisting of ten cabins. The Fish Camp cabin was believed to be the owner/manager's cabin as it consisted of two bedrooms where the other original cabins were efficiencies. The Fish Camp cabin has been renovated with all the amenities, but keeps it's original, rustic character. The cabin has beamed ceilings and heart pine floors. The cabin has a living, kitchen, and dining area combination. The cabin also has a charming fireplace updated with gas logs. The wooden furniture was made locally by a Bon Secour craftsman. There are two bedrooms with a hallway and bathroom separating the bedrooms. The kitchen is completely furnished for cooking your favorite seafood recipe. New refrigerator, gas stove, microwave and dishwasher are available for guest's use. The kitchen has new granite countertops. A storage building next to the cabin contains a clothes washer and dryer. Designated parking is available next to the cabin.

The fish camp's spectacular 150 year old liveoak tree overlooks the river and dock and there is a swing for use by guests. Within walking distance of the cabin are two fish houses where fish and shrimp are unloaded directly from the boats. Fresh caught gulf shrimp are always available and fresh fish include speckled trout, flounder, grouper, red fish, mullet and many other species. World famous Bon Secour oysters are always available.

There is a front screened porch with river views. Guests can see shrimp boats traveling up and down the river. Dolphins can frequently be observed swimming in the river. The area is excellent for fishing right from the dock for speckled trout, redfish or flounder. Guests will have access to a crab trap, to try your hand at catching blue crabs. If you don't catch your dinner, there is an excellent restaurant close by, the Tin Top. You can't go wrong with anything ordered there.

The location is also perfect for those wanting beach access, but a more private, quaint setting. Beautiful Gulf Shores beaches and all the beach attractions are close by. The State Park Facilities provide beautiful beach areas, and a long fishing pier. Bon Secour Wildlife Refuge has hiking trails and beaches. Fort Morgan is a historic site and also has public beaches. Designated bird watching sites are throughout this area.

The Bon Secour Fish Camp is perfect for those wanting a unique beach and/or fishing experience without the hassle of beach crowds. The Fish Camp is a little "off the beaten path". Perfect for a week end getaway or longer term rental. Come and enjoy!

About Gil Jennings

Hello, We are Gil and Linda. Please let us introduce ourselves and invite you to enjoy our Fish Camp cabin as we have over the years. We are both Alabama natives. We have been coming to Bon Secour since 1988 and have loved the laid back fishing community. It has been home port for our sailboats in the past. It has also been home port for a variety of small fishing boats. We have enjoyed setting mullet nets and sunset cruises up the river. We are currently boating and fishing in Salty, a New England lobster boat. We both enjoy paddling kayaks. Both Gil and Linda are MSW social workers and are mostly retired, leaving even more time to be enjoying the fishing and boating!

Gil Jennings purchased this cottage in 1988

Why Gil Jennings chose Gulf Shores

We purchased our first cabin in the Bon Secour Fish Camp in 1986 to have a boat dock for our sailboat. We quickly came to love the shrimping work environment and the fishing and the local people we met that lived off the shrimping industry. This has been our base and second home for many years for sailing and fishing. We have enjoyed cruising up the river and sunset cruises into Mobile Bay. We have had family, friends and loved ones enjoy many memories of vacations here; setting the mullet net, gumbo cook-offs, going to the "Ice Box". We would love to share this unique setting with you on your vacation.

What makes this cottage unique

A quiet and unique community located on the historic Bon Secour river. Removed from the bustle of beach life but close enough to go if you wish. Wonderful opportunity to catch your own seafood, or buy from local fish houses or just relax and enjoy the shrimp boats go by.

Cozy cottage and relaxing atmosphere within easy driving distance to the beach - a great combination

Wonderful experience for three year old’s first trip to the coast! We felt like a part of the local community but still had easy access to beaches and activities in Gulf Shores, Fort Morgan and Orange Beach.

We really enjoyed our quiet time at this house. The location is far enough out of town from the hustle and bustle for a relaxing vacation, but close proximity to restaurants and beach days. All within 15/20 minutes. The hubby (fisherman) really loved the fishing dock and I really loved the fact that the owners accepted our family pet, as we do not travel without him with us. The owners have everything you need and more for an enjoyable stay. Fully stocked kitchen ready for preparing your favorite meals. We really felt like we were home. We look forward to returning to this house next time we are in the area. Thank you so much for the much needed R&R. Jeannie Maye

Week of Peace

  • 5 of 5

We stayed a week in a small community. Houses are supper close together, but we didn't hear any noise. Loved the home. It was cozy and clean. There were a total of 4 of us stayed in the two bedroom house. Two of the most important items for me is the A/C and hot water. Both were more than adequate. Beds were comfortable and the location was perfect. TV was direct tv and it had a good selection. I would definitely stay here again.

Fish Camp Cabin was wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was adorable! Very clean and so comfortable. We were greeted with supplies such as coffee, creamer, plenty of toiletries and extra blankets. The beds were both very comfortable and the central air kept the cabin so nice and cool! I look forward to renting this cabin again and, by the way, the owners are so very nice and helpful! We were able to wash and dry our clothes as needed and the cabin is pet friendly! There was a tremendous area to walk our pets as well and it felt very safe and was quiet. I could go on telling you about our stay, try it! You will be surprised how nice it is!

In the middle of exploration

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four plus one happy yellow lab thoroughly enjoyed our visit. The cottage is just the right size! We had everything that we needed. We could (and did) travel to Fort Morgan, Mobile, and up and down Orange Beach with ease.

We don't tend to return to places we've been to before, but we sure will recommend this cottage to our friends and family!

Bon Secour is home to working shrimp boats, seafood retail markets, and beautiful live oaks with hanging moss. The Bon Secour Cottages, including the Fish Camp cabin, are located on the Bon Secour River. The Bon Secour River runs into Mobile Bay and the bay runs into the Gulf of Mexico. The Intracoastal Waterway is located right out the mouth of the Bon Secour River. This area is perfect for those that would like to fish for speckled trout, redfish and trout; throw a cast net; and set the crab traps. And, it is also perfect for the beach lovers as it is a very short drive to the beautiful beaches at Gulf Shores, fine restaurants and all the activities the beach offers. This location is also very convenient to the Tanger Outlet Mall for all those with the shopping genes! Guests are encouraged to bring their fishing boats, fishing gear, kayaks, and bikes. Boat launch facilities are nearby and dockage is included on the property of the Bon Secour Cottages. Fishing and crabbing right off the dock is enjoyed by the owners and guests. Guests can also enjoy sitting or swinging on the dock soaking up the sun, watching for dolphins, seagulls, and pelicans, or simply relaxing in the shaded dock area with a good book. This is a quaint, quiet, unique area.

The Bon Secour cabins are located on River Road, which is a short stretch of road that parallels the Bon Secour River. At one end of River Road is Billy's Seafood. Billy's logo: "If it swims, they've got it." Guests can purchase shrimp or whatever seafood you desire, and prepare your own private feast at the Fish Camp cabin. At the other end of River Road is Aquilla Seafood, known for the royal red shrimp caught from deep in the gulf. Royal Reds will make your feast complete, sauted in butter, some say they taste like lobster.

When you don't want to cook, but don't want to drive to the beach, an excellent restaurant, The Tin Top, is just down the road. The menu is extensive, and we have always had good meals there.

The Fish Camp at Bon Secour cottages, provides a good base for exploring the area. Fort Morgan is a historical sight and also has beautiful beaches that are usually not as populated, being off the beaten path. You can cross Mobile Bay, taking a ferry from Fort Morgan to Dauphin Island, with or without your car, and enjoy the ferry cruise as well as seeing Fort Gaines on the other side of the Bay. The Bon Secour Wildlife Refuge is located down Fort Morgan Road and has a hiking trail as well as beach front to enjoy. There are numerous bird watching sights in the surrounding areas.

Traveling back to the Gulf Shores area, the State Park beach area has excellent beach access, facilities and a fishing pier. Public golf courses are nearby, and amusement parks for the young, and young at heart. Who doesn't love a game of miniature golf! Gulf Shores also has a very nice zoo. For the most adventurous, there are zip-lines operating in the State Park area, as well as para-sailing on the beach.

Whatever, your interests are, there is always something happening in this area. The Wharf located in Orange Beach, a short drive, has an excellent concert venue, shops, and eats. It's always party time when Jimmy Buffett performs! You might want to plan your trip around your favorite artist's performance. Speaking of Jimmy Buffett, don't miss his sister's place, Lulu's, located under the bridge at the Inter Coastal Bridge coming into Gulf Shores. Jimmy has been know to stroll unannounced through the restaurant and sometimes sing a song or two. Pirate's Cove is worth a visit, as it is rumored to be the original Cheeseburger in Paradise site. Tacky Jack's is another favorite spot, just across the Inter Coastal from Lulu's. Wolf Bay Lodge is also an excellent eatery, located in Foley and on the beach. You will find many wonderful places to eat and wonderful local seafood. Enjoy!
