About Liz

Hello, I am Liz and my husband is Quentin. We are both now retired, I trained in art, and was an air hostess, where I met my husband whilst in India. My husband was a ship's-captain on long-haul and fast ferries and worked on passenger ships with the B.I. Company. We have one son, who lives near Paris and one grandson.

We love this corner of the world and enjoy sharing its beauty with our visitors. We have made lots of wonderful friends who return year after year.

Liz purchased this apartment in 2000

Why Liz chose Nice Area

We chose to live in France, and fell madly in love with this lovely villa at first sight! It is unique in that it is very private, surrounded by beautiful terraces with olive, lemon, and orange trees and yet it is on the doorstep of Nice. We love being able to walk into the village and share a coffee and croissant with our new French friends.

Here, at Le Contadour, we are so spoiled to live under the gorgeous blue Mediterranean skies.

What makes this apartment unique

The Contadour (haunt of artists and writers) has hosted guests worldwide for over 15 years and who return frequently. It is perfectly located just 20 mins. drive from Nice, Vence, and the many famous beaches and tourist spots on the Riviera.

Highly rated as 5* it maintains its peace and serenity in an area of outstanding natural beauty; perched 300 m above the Var Valley and the foothills of the Alpes.

If you can tear yourself away from the beauty of this villa, then visit the famous resorts of Nice, Monaco, Cannes and St Tropez- all a short drive away, or escape to the mountains and visit the ancient perched villages where time stands still.

Locally, you can visit a Roman vineyard and sample the delicious wines of the area. Take a walk into the hills for spectacular views. Share the life of a French resident. Participate in village life by joining in a game of boules or sipping a gorgeous coffee with a steaming croissant, while watching the locals greeting one another.

The famous institutions such as the Fondation Maechdt and the Matisse Chapel are close by with wonderful exhibitions of art and sculpture.

Shop for fresh fruits and vegetables in local markets. Taste the huge varieties of cheese from the mountains.

Even in the short winter months, Gattieres is sheltered from the frost and snow and you can sit out most days to enjoy lunch on your terrace. We get 300 days of sunshine a year.

Within the grounds of Le Contadour, you will be able to benefit from an exotic, heated pool, surrounded by mediterranean plants and trees. You no longer need wait until the crowds arrive on the Riviera to appreciate the calm surroundings and the beauty of the area. Here at Le Contadour, you are central for everything; the airport being only a 20 minute drive away, and the motorway only 10 minutes drive.

You can enjoy all the benefits of life on the Cote d'Azur here at Le Contadour and for those who seek a hideaway different from the masses whether young or old, it is right here

A Little Piece Of Heaven!

  • 5 of 5

We decided on the South of France for our honeymoon & we were so lucky to find Le Contadour! A Little Piece of Heaven!! Totally breathtaking! You have to be there to totally appreciate what Le Contadour has to offer! You would not be disappointed! We could have stayed there forever! The property is beautiful the description so accurate so very well maintained & clean everything you need is there! You would not get a better couple than Liz & Quentin such a warm heartfelt welcome we received when we arrived and throughout our stay they were the perfect hosts! They were no way intrusive but you knew if there was anything you needed they were always at hand for you. We had a great evening with them good food fine wine and the company excellent! We have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending this property! We are looking forward to visiting Le Contadour again!

Owner's Response: We felt so proud to have a lovely young couple choose Le Contadour for their honeymoon. Although nervous of such a responsibility, we knew that the choice we had made in coming to live here, in this little paradise, would merit every comment made. Every guest we receive is made to feel special, as a "thank you" for having chosen us. Liz and Quentin.

Perfect in Every Way

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I had a wonderful holiday in this beautiful villa, we were there for a week from 29th Oct and enjoyed warm and sunny weather all week. We chose the villa from Owners Direct website, all the information provided is exactly what you have.

Our first few days were spent relaxing around the pool or on our private balcony with fantastic views and we used all the facilities in Gattieres which is only a 10 minute walk.

We then explored the area, visiting some lovely places and had a fabulous day in Nice before returning home with heavy hearts and now missing everything there and struggling with the drop in temperature 20c to 6c!

Liz and Quentin are perfect hosts, there to help you if needed with lots of good tips on where to visit and eat, providing all they can to give you your perfect holiday without intruding on your privacy.

If you are looking to book in this beautiful area then do not hesitate to book Le Contadour, you will not be disappointed. We have enjoyed many villa holidays in Europe and would not hesitate to return to Le Contadour.

Owner's Response: Again, a lovely surprise to receive such a glowing report from our seasoned travellers. They were delightful and we too, enjoyed their company during their stay here at Le Contadour. I was glad that we could advise them on some of our favourite places to visit; even when one knows an area pretty well, there are always corners which remain secret to visitors. There is such a lot to see in the Alpes Maritime and having been living here with my husband for nearly 16 years, we are still discovering interesting places nearby. We completely understand that what we have here at Le Contadour is perfectly suited to our visitors from all over the world and each and every one that visits is a real pleasure for us. Once again, many thanks for choosing to stay with us in our "little bit of paradise"! Liz and Quentin x

A charming house near everything

  • 5 of 5

Our choice for residence hit the spot! We had a sporty one week's holiday in Nice area and chose Le Contadour for our location that would be logistically in good place. Good reviews also supported the decision to choose the apartment. And I must say that the previous reviews were right. The apartment was really nice and practical and the owners, Liz and Quentin were very pleasant and helpful. A beautiful garden with swimming pool and great views from the balcony created the real Provencal atmosphere : ) Our two teens as well as we parents enjoyed the heated pool even in night time.

The medieval village of Gattieres half a mile away was a good place to buy food and other nearby villages really absolutely charming and atmospheric places to visit - would recommend. Among them you can find nice, good and wallet friendly restaurants. Directly from the yard of Le Countaudor you could find nice cycling routes to e.g. Le Broc, Coursegoules, Cipieris, Le Bar-sur-Loup etc. Really great area if you like road cycling. It was also very easy to rent bikes from France Bike Rentals. Not to mention the Mercantour area (nature park) with beautiful mountain hiking destinations such as Millefonts. As friends of football we went to look a match between Nice-Lyon at the Allianz Riviera stadium. The Stadium was only 15 minutes away by car. Also, e.g. Monaco, airport and even Nice center was easily accessible by car.

Yes, I warmly recommend Le Contadour !

Owner's Response: It was a lovely surprise to receive this warm and well-thought out review from my Finnish guests. We appreciate the time taken to think through and write comments after a holiday. The area surrounding Le Contadour is perfect for keen walkers or cyclists as cycling forms a great part of french life and they can be seen everywhere; some are not young and yet they gallop up the mountain roads like young goats! Thank you all for choosing to stay with us and we will keep a warm spot in our hearts for you. Liz and Quentin x

Excellent location, great property, fantastic hosts!

  • 5 of 5

It's very difficult to write this review without repeating everything that's already been said but here goes!

Location - Gattieres is a very nice village within a 10 minute walk of the property. It has everything you need including a supermarket and boulangerie. There's also a nice restaurant called Le Manon. It's a great base for sightseeing with the likes of Nice on your doorstep or other little French villages such as Carros where's there's a great restaurant called Creperie du Moment.

Property - faultless! As soon as we walked in we knew we'd chosen well. Spotlessly clean with everything you could possibly need provided, including a generous supply of towels. The outside space is second to none. There are plenty of places to sit and read (or doze!) from the loungers around the glorious (spotlessly clean) pool to your own balcony looking out over the river Var and down to Nice airport. Truly a view we never tired of looking out on.

Hosts - Liz and Quentin. Made us feel very welcome from the minute we arrived which is a great way to start your stay. It was great having them around to help or answers questions but they are very good at making sure you have your privacy.

We certainly wouldn't hesitate in recommending this property!

The only downside was we were only there for a week, a mistake we certainly won't be making next time if we are luckily enough to stay here again.

Great position and friendly hosts

  • 5 of 5

The property is located I the hills above nice - about 30 min drive to the old town. Gattieres is a lovely little village with supermarket and bakery , plus a couple of nice restaurants. The host were lovely and nothing was too much hassle . The pool is fantastic and it is easy to loose yourself amongst the olive and citrus trees! I would definitely reccomend.

A tranquil sun kissed oasis within easy reach of the Cote d'Azure

  • 5 of 5

"Will you pick me a lemon from the tree?" asked my wife as she prepared the salad for the barbecue we were about to have

on our sun soaked terrace overlooking the Var valley. A smile lit up my face. I had never been asked to do that before.

You do not get an opportunity to pluck lemons in cloudy Manchester. And yet here in Gattieres, a two hour flight away,

we had a terrace with a lemon tree and a magnificent olive tree. On the Webber charcoal barbecue we cooked tender steaks from the local supermarket, a short walk away. We have always loved France, and here at Liz's attractive villa, it was at its magnificent best. The house boasts a wonderful warm pool surrounded by sun loungers, and umbrellas.

The accommodation is very comfortable with everything you need to prepare a meal.If you want to lounge in the sun for a week a two, you could stay for the entire time in the property, but we love to explore.

And what a region to explore. The bustling port city of Nice with its beautiful Belle Epoque buildings, museums, and galleries

is a short distance away as are the coastal resorts of Antibes and Theole sur Mer with their sandy beaches and lovely warm

Mediterranean swimming. The Grande Corniche and the beautiful village of Eze offered views right along the coast from

across the border in Italy to St Tropez. On a really clear day I am told you can see Corsica nearly 100 miles away.We ventured across the border to the grand Italian coastal resort of San Remo.

We were lucky to stay in Gattieres when the village hosted its annual opera festival with a wonderful production of the

Barber of Seville. Held in the open air at the top of the village by the church, the entertainment was outstanding

with faultless singing, accompanied by a wonderful orchestra. At the interval you could grab a glass of champagne and a

slice of pizza.

The village celebrated Bastille day the previous night with dancing in the village square to a disco. We danced a little

and drank a lot of pichets of rose. What a night.

Liz and Quentin, who live in the adjoining house were magnificent hosts - unobtrusive, but there when needed.

Owner's Response: What a wonderful review! I feel so proud to think that we have achieved a "little bit of heaven" for guests who choose to stay here at Le Contadour. We have opened up our home to share the enormous joy we get every day, living here in these beautiful surroundings. It is obvious that guests love it as much as we do and it is our pleasure to invite all to come and share in its beauty and tranquility.

Car: recommended

Gattieres, is an unspoilt, active, very French medieval village, situated 300m above the Var Valley. It is steeped in history, dating from the Middle Ages where its streets still reflect times long ago. Perched on the foothills of the Alpes, the views from the village down the Var river to the Mediterranean sea or beyond to the snowy mountains, are breathtaking!

All the most famous resorts on the Riviera are only a 20 min. drive on easy fast roads. There are many local, scenic train journeys along the coast where a car is not necessary.

Gattieres Opus, hosts a famous open-air opera in July every year, professionally produced with well-know operatic singers from Italy and musicians. It is a performance not to be missed!

Numerous cultural events, concerts, street parties, plus local markets and car boot sales are big attractions in the summer, with bargains galore and great fun for all the family.

Many famous writers and artists have lived in the area, drawn by the quality of the light, such as Monet, Matisse, Picasso, Renoir, and Chagall and their works can be seen in many of the local galleries and museums.

For skiers, it is less than one hours drive to the well-known ski resorts of Greolieres, Isla 2000, Colmiane, and Auron; ski in the morning and party by the pool in the evening-even in November! The pool is heated!!

The Italian border is only 50 mins. drive away with its famous street markets offering copies of designer products and great restaurants. The Piedmonte mountain area is very scenic for day trips.

We are central for visiting the many Medieval, historic, mountain villages such as Eze, La Turbie with its Roman ruins, or famous resorts on the Cote d'Azur, such as Nice, with its international crowds, its famous flower festival in February, and the fantastic Carnival; one of the biggest in Europe! A must for winter months!

Monaco, and its principality including the exciting international Grande Prix, and Cannes, with its famous film festival in May, where you will see many of the famous stars from screen and TV. St.Tropez, the home of Brigitte Bardo, chic boutiques, and super yachts. Vence, for its famous artists, including the fascinating Maecht Museum in St Paul; International Antibes, with its millionaire yachts and international crowds is a must to visit.

Feel part of the jet-set scene by simply sitting with a cocktail at one of the many splendid bars situated all along the coast. All this is available a short drive from the villa.

For nature lovers and those who love walking, we have the well-known GR51 which crosses from east to west across France and is accessible from Gattieres. Many simple and delightful walks can be made from the villa for all levels of competence, promising extraordinary views and quality of air!

Cycling enthusiasts can enjoy participating in the numerous clubs and tracks in the area which is famous for its cycling. It is a national sport here in France. The Iron Man contest passes right through Gattieres.

Other Activities: Botanical walks, Matisse chapel, art galleries, mountain resorts, painting courses, horse races, theatre, concerts, outdoor markets, top restaurants locally, golf, fishing, and rafting, and ferry trips to the islands of Lerin, where the Cistercian monks have created a wonderful vineyard and allow visits to the ancient monastery. Nothing is forgotten in the playground of the Riviera!

Not forgetting Golf: We have 12 golf courses nearby. However, courses tend to be quite pricey. Check them out on the internet before lugging them with you on holiday!

Great tennis clubs are available to guests nearby.

Ski: There are many well-known ski resorts in the area surrounding the Alpes Maritimes. The closest at Isola 2000 is only an hour's drive away, with all facilities, or lovely Colmieres, for both ski du font and Alpine. The scenery is breathtaking, even for simply walking. You can be skiing in the morning and be back to the villa for a BBQ in the evening!

Or for simple indulgence, treat yourself to the numerous spas and beauty centres in the area. Nothing has been spared here on the Cote d'Azur! It really is a wonderful destination - that is why we chose to live here permanently!

Le Contadour Villa is designed for the discerning visitor even in our glorious winter when the crowds have left. Come and enjoy the winter sun where you can still see temperatures of 16+°- escape from the cold, wet weather back home. Swim in a lovely heated pool chez nous! So easy to fly to; in 20 minutes you can be enjoying all the comforts of our villa, sit on the terrace and enjoy a glass or two of bubbly, take in the exotic perfumes of the flowers, and ... relax! Share our little bit of paradise here on the Cote d'Azur!
