About Máximo Alvarez-Garmón

Hello, my name is Claire and I am the Property Manager of Casa Serena Costa Rica. During the remodel, I stayed on the property and it was such a privilege to see it evolve from a run down property to the magnificent home it is today. At Villa Casa Serena you are invited to make it your home away from home. I truly think you will love this place as much as I do. If there are any questions, i'd love to be able to help you.

Pura Vida!!

Why Máximo Alvarez-Garmón chose Palm Beach Estates

Casa Serena is a such an amazing place that photos do not do it justice. From sunrise walks on the desolate beach to the sunsets sitting by the pool or wiggling your feet in the sand - it's like no other. With 5 private acres with a beachfront view, you can't go wrong!

What makes this villa unique

As you enter Casa Serena, you get the "wow" factor and you will feel you're on a trip of a lifetime. Costa Rica offers so many exciting adventures and then you get to come home and relax in your own personal slice of beach heaven. Casa Serena is located in Playa Grande, which is a small town, and it is detached from the busy life offered in Tamarindo. It really makes you feel like you feel like you're on an island with very few people. There is no denying that nature has wrapped you in its arms, you’ll lie in bed at night and hear the waves crashing on the moonlit beach. The howler monkeys might climb through the trees in the early hours and wake you up but it is a spectacular noise and one I have come to love. I could keep telling you how unique Casa Serena is but the only way you will truly be part of the story is to come see for yourself.

There are so many wonderful things to say about Casa Serena. We had 2 families of 4 for a total of 8 guests and we should've invited a third family to help fill all of the fantastic spaces this property offers. The beach was perfect - ideal waves, soft sand, expansive, and basically people-free. The private surf lessons, the shells, sand dollars and mini hermit crabs all provided endless entertainment for the kids who spent hours on end in the water. The house has every amenity you could need including pool and ping-pong tables for game nights and the beautiful deck with a ocean breeze and view for sunsets. Bedrooms were very comfortable and clean. The staff were phenomenal, especially the house manager Mark who lives next door and took care of everything from coordinating a fishing trip to helping with a delivery of groceries to just checking in on us with a smile to see if we needed anything. Isolda was our amazing cook and Sergio took loving care of the property. We loved the howler monkeys, including moms carrying babies, who traveled through nearby trees a few mornings and evenings. Truly endless wonderful memories, we all can't wait to go back and will stay longer next time.

Owner's Response: Hi Tim. Please allow me to say what a great pleasure it was having you all in Casa Serena. You guys were great and took very good care of our property. Thank you very much. We try our best to cater our property for all the needs of our guests and I am happy to hear you enjoyed everything at the house. The beach, as you well mentioned, is amazing and practically private. I really appreciate your kind words for our staff. They are hard working people and try their best to accomodate our guests, and make them feel comfortable at all times. Mark is a great guy and very friendly. We send you all our best regards and once again, thank you very much for your kind and honest review. Take care.

Good but could be so much better...

  • 2 of 5

My family and I stayed at Villa Casa Serena and the place has a lot of charm, it is open and just steps away from the beach, Mark was very kind and available but the house is old and needs some upgrades...before going I had read reviews about the sewage smell and the pool not being clean and so I had asked Maximo if those were active issues and he assured me we would not have to deal with any of that...but we did, two of the rooms had a bad sewage smell and they needed to be "fixed" while we were there, it was just a temporary fix and the smell kept coming back in one of the rooms, the water in the pool was murky (not dirty with leaves as you would expect form the trees, but not crystalline), we found after complaining that it could be cleaned properly and that was done the day before our departure, the ari conditioning in one of the rooms was leaking gas, and the fridge was leaking water, the kitchen utensils and coffeemaker were dirty when we came in, we were told they had expected the prior group would have cleaned it better. Those were issues that are not terrible but certainly can be improved, but what disappointed me the most is that Maximo kept $275 for a damage that we did not cause, we were accused of driving on top of some water tanks that we never saw, no pictures to show the damage, plus there were other cars driving in the property, we left and nobody mentioned anything, I asked for a walk through before living to ensure that there were no damages and things were as we found them...but that was not enough, we used the road that was used by everyone, there were no markings or signaling of areas that should be avoided, no explanations, as simple as that. We have been renting houses for the last 10 years and had never had anything like this happen.

I hope they can work on those details because the place has a lot of potential.

Amazing property and vacation experience in Playa Grande, Guanacaste

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week at Casa Serena in Playa Grande. We were a group of six adults and seven children. The property was everything we expected and more. The town is great. Very laid back with great restaurants and most basic needs within walking distance. Mark, the property manger was amazing! He has tons of resources and was very helpful. I'd suggest bringing some extra cash for the locals to make your trip even more relaxing and enjoyable.

Fantastic private compound steps from a wide, quiet beach

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 8 adults and 7 children spent a lovely week at Casa Serena in December. The home is just steps from Playa Grande beach, which is (having tried about a dozen) one of the best and most child-friendly beaches in Costa Rica. Wide beach, soft sand, good waves for fun. Plenty of surfing action and board rentals nearby. The property is well-maintained and well-run and is just as beautiful as in the pictures.

Wonderful Beach Villa

  • 4 of 5

We rented Casa Serena with a group of friends in November to have a week long celebration since many of us had or will hit the 50's in 2016-2017.

On the Pro side, We can say that this villa perfectly met our expectation regarding the privacy and the comfort. The Kitchen, BBQ and Dining area were perfect so we had wonderful meal cooked either by a local chef or by us. All the bedrooms were very comfortable. The sitting area close to the pool was a great spot to sit and exchange with friends all day long.

The fact that this villa is located on Playa Grande is probably what we liked the most of our stay. This beach is wonderful. No crowds. Almost always less than 50 peoples on many kilometers long stretch (But also no turtles in November ;-( ). Few surfer here and there. Coffee in the morning and champagne with the sunset was so wonderful. We ended up sending much more time on the beach than expected.

We would also like to thank Mark (the caretaker) who was fantastic with us. He even cooked ribs and a Flanc for us. He also called a local fisherman who came to the villa to sell us wonderful local fresh fish, lobster, shrimps and even an octopus. He was also very helpful with the little Con's we encountered at the Villa.

Those Con's mainly came from sewage smells found in some bedrooms... After the first night, One of our friends couple had to change room due to the bad smell. It was OK after but for that they needed to purge the septic system on a regular basis and it generated disturbing odors when we were hanging around the house. Also, for almost our entire stay, the pool was not inviting. The water was always blurry. Those are not major issues since we saw real effort in order to get rid of them. Nevertheless, when you spend 8500$ (Canadian dollars) for a Villa, It's supposed to be perfect in every aspect. At this price tag, we would also recommend the maid personnel to come on a more regular basis.

Overall, we had a great time at the villa, and if they solve those little problems we would highly recommend to any large group to rent this villa.

Costa-Rica is a wonderful country. Peaceful and safe. The people there are extremely friendly. Go, you will not regret it.

Owner's Response: Good morning and greetings from Marbella (Spain). Thank you very much for your very honest review. Please allow me to start my apologizing for the inconveniences you all encountered during your stay in Casa Serena. I would like to give you an explanation about what happened with the sewage system while you were there. In 2016 we made an important investment to refurbish the whole property to bring it up to the high standard it deserved. One of the jobs was to completely change the sewage system for all the bathrooms and make the main septic tank bigger and better, to allow all waste water to drain properly. We had a very bad experience with the first builder we contracted and realized shortly after you left what the problem was. The builder had not connected the pipes properly to the sewage system nor had he sealed the toilets correctly, meaning that all the stagnant water was not flushing properly into the septic tank, causing horrendous smells at times. I am very sorry you had to experience this during your special holiday and I can guarantee you that the problem has now been solved. I had to contract another professional builder, and together with my good friend Mark (who is very happy and thankful for your kind words about him), worked hard to dig all the pipes and complete the sewage installation in a proper manner. In reference to the swimming pool, we brought in a professional technician and we realized that the pump was not cleaning & filtering the pool properly, so we changed some parts and filled the pump with new sand and it is now working perfectly. The water is now crystal clear and please accept my apologies that you had to swim in blurry water during your holidays. I am very glad to hear that you were overall happy with house, except for the con´s you experienced. I try to travel to Playa Grande a few times a year to check on the house and visit Mark, and I completely agree with you when you mention that the beach in wonderful and that the house is very private and comfortable. I would also like to mention that we are considering your comment in reference to cleaning and we will decide soon if to include more regular cleaning while guests are renting the property. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank you for recommending Casa Serena to other guests and I really appreciate all your comments, as you have helped us to make the house better. With all my best regards and we look forward to seeing you soon. MAXIMO.

Great for families

  • 4 of 5

We had a great time at Casa Serena. The pictures reflect the house. The BBQ area is great. There is a bar with stools, fridge and sink. The Internet signal was great.

The kitchen has all modern appliances

Having private bathrooms in each room was great.

I like to walk from Casa Serena along the beach down to Rip Jack and eat one of the menu items.
Car: necessary

Playa Grande life is very serene with minimal nightlife due to its quaint location. Due to Casa Serena location, we highly recommend you rent a car. Even though it is a small town, it has a wide selection of restaurants with good food and great service. If you want more nightlife and/or shopping then take a boat across the Estuary or drive into Tamarindo.
