This is a charming cottage ideal for your family, friends and pets. Only 100 yards from the largest beach along the Indiana shore, the cottage is perfect for your summer get away. You are walking distance to the zoo, Washington Park, marina, museum and one mile from great shopping at Lighthouse Place, a Prime Outlet mall.
The cottage is sunfilled and cozy, perfect for a beach setting. It has all the necessities you'll need with a fully outfitted kitchen, linens and towels, 2 tvs, (one in the living room and one bedroom)and videos, books for the kids. The deck extends along the house and is just right for afternoon naps and serving meals. There's a large yard for play, including fire pit for s'mores and conversation as well as a driveway, (major plus in the summer), and close enough to the beach, you can run back and forth for the toys you forgot. Spend the evening watching beautiful sunsets over Lake Michigan then head out to one of the 4 restaurants around the park, the Blue Chip Casino, or take in a movie at the multi-plex in town.
We welcome you to spend some time enjoying the beach and hope to help make your vacation a special one!
About the cottage:
We found that we were remiss in our write-up regarding the cottage and several reviews pointed this out to is. The cottage was built in 1920 with facelifts throughout the years. It's been a family getaway for our kids and their friends since birth (oldest is now 30). It's never been gutted but is updated, hence the rates are priced appropriately relative to the market. It is welcoming and cozy and we try to provide all the amenities you need. The location is good and it's quiet. If you're looking for new this isn't for you. But if you want comfort, a good price, and location, you'll enjoy your stay.
Purchased this cute cottage when my 2 city bred kids were growing up so we'd have a place where they could be carefree. With the beach down the street, the park next door we've enjoyed many many years here during the summer. They are now in their 20s and busy with their lives.
Eileen McKnight purchased this house in 1986
Unlike most rentals the cottage is set up as if I lived there. I come out as often as possible. It's cozy, has all the amenities, cutely decorated. Has parking for 2 and just a brief walk down the street to the largest beach along the lake. The park is wonderful with tennis courts, a zoo and harbor side restaurant. Its a perfect location.
Location, location, location, decorated as if it's your own home. Video, games, books for the kids. Dog friendly. A large yard with fire pit for s'mores in the evening. Everything you need to enjoy the summer.
We had a great fall weekend at this beach cottage. A short walk to an almost empty beach, a perfect sunset such a great way to start the weekend. We took long walks on the beach, our dog loved it! Enjoyed exploring town, got some great bargains at the outlets, delicious food and drink at the Shoreline Brewery and Fiddleheads. Great spot to unwind! The owner was great to work with and would love to make it back in the summer.
My husband and I and our two boys, 20 and 17 years, took our vacation at the end of September. We absolutely loved it here!!! Eileen was there when we arrived and was very kind and helpful in giving suggestions of things to do in the area. The home is very cozy and comfortable and has everything you could ever need for a fun, relaxing time with your family. If you forgot something, make sure to check the basement! We forgot our Frisbee and what do ya know? The same Frisbee was in this basement! The deck is full of beautiful flowers and I'm totally in love with the dining table and bouncy chairs! The yard is a perfect size and we used the fire pit every night of our stay. In the mornings, we'd take a walk around the neighborhood, which we really enjoyed.
The beach is a short walk down the street. It's spectacular! Be very mindful, however, if you take the path that's at the end of the street. On the second day, I managed to stumble upon a huge screw buried in the sand that went straight into my flip-flop. It was at least 5 inches long and only managed to nick the bottom of my foot. I'm not sure why it was in the sand but we threw it away and I hobbled back to the house, hoping to find some peroxide, which I did find in the cabinet above the toilet. After that incident, I'd walk down a few streets and then hop on the path to the beach. My family still used that same path and never had any issues.
Anyway, the location of this home is perfect! It's close to the zoo, park, the lighthouse, and just a short drive to some great restaurants and shopping at the Lighthouse Place Outlets. We even scheduled a tour of the Barker Mansion! It was amazing!!!
My family and I would love to come back during the warmer summer months in order to enjoy the boating and other water activities on the lake. The charters didn't run after Labor Day and the water was a bit too cold to swim. We still had a wonderful time and can't wait to come back!!!
Thanks so much, Eileen, for your hospitality and kindness!
This is a delightful property and a good location! Ms. McKnight was easy to deal with and we certainly hope to make a return trip.
For those looking for a small cottage within a short walking distance of the beach, this is great! The cottage itself is a bit dated, but it has been nicely kept and renovated with current technology and comforts. Yes, the houses in this area are close together, but I never felt as if my privacy was being invaded. This is a nice property, as it sits off the road (giving it more privacy and quiet ambiance) and has a small yard with a fire pit and plenty of space for a pet. It also includes off-street parking, which is a major plus! The listing says that it is "parking for two," although I would question that depending on what type of vehicle you drive. Two sedans could fit in this space, but I'm not so sure about two vans.
Some things to consider when renting:
1. The cottage has a full kitchen with many tools, dishes and what-nots to help you prepare meals.
2. While there are plastic blinds on the bedroom windows, there are no curtains or shades. There are shades in the living and dining area, but they are shear. This is great for brightening up the room. However, for people like me who prefer a much darker room when sleeping, you may want to think about ways to help you avoid this problem.
3. Within walking distance of the property is a big park and the Michigan City Zoo. Also within the park is a nice splash water park for cooling off. (Please check operating times before going.)
4. The beach was wonderful. Our family visited in August and the water was cool and clean. Locals and vacationers in this area were very pleasant.
I would definitely recommend this property to renters.
My husband and I loved our week at this property. The location was perfect. Close to beach. The decor is lovely. The owner was great to work with.
When we first arrived we where a little shocked at how close all the houses are to each other. Don't let that take anything away form this home. It is an older house but it makes you feel at home. It has a nice little fire pit and more yard than most homes around it. It is in the PERFECT LOCATION. It is in walking distance to Washington Park, The Zoo, The Marina, and the Beach. Eileen emailed to assure us we were able to use the beach chairs and beach umbrella that she has for guest use. We will defiantly contact her when we go back.
