Lovely pool, wonderful views

  • 4 of 5

We return yearly to this area, and to Homeaway to provide accommodation that matches the description on the website. Col di Maturaia has a slightly daunting drive down to the villa, but this results in seclusion, wonderful views, and the entertainment of wild boar in the orchard at night. The aspect of the pool meant we got sun until late in the day - often dragging ourselves indoors at 8pm. Locally the small town of Pieve has a great range of local stores with a baker, butcher, greengrocer, and gelato/coffee bar to name our more frequented ones. (Do try the regional "hand" shaped bread). There are really good supermarkets in the town too. We drove to Florence (2 hours) but enjoyed buying leather bags/satchels in Lucca (50 mins), where we found local workshops. Castiglione provided our favourite meal of the holiday, in an unassuming restaurant inside the walls we were served wonderful homemade food.We were lucky with the weather, but good wi fi and comfy sofas would have meant we were covered either way.

What an amazing location

  • 5 of 5

This is an amazing property, the location is up the hill away from Pieve Foscana however it is only a quick drive down the hill.

The views from the swimming pool is stunning. The pool is large and has very good beds and umbrellas.

The house is large with plenty of spaces for people to go off and hide. The patios outside were lovely to sit out in the evening and watch the world go by.

There are plenty of small local shops down in Pieve Foscana or a couple of supermarkets

The restaurant up the hill serving local dishes and pizza is amazing along with plenty down in PF and the surrounding villages.

A ride up the hill to San Pelligreno is recommended as the views are just stunning I imagine the walls would be good however it was too late in the evening so we just settled for a meal in one of the restaurants which was lovely.

If you want a relaxing holiday away from everything this is the place however there are plenty of places to visits as we visited Florence and Pisa as well as going go carting down near Lucca

Lovely, quiet home with gorgeous views

  • 5 of 5

We had a relaxing, peaceful stay at Col di Maturaia - the house and pool are well-maintained, spacious and comfortable, and the views are breathtaking. We found plenty to do in the area, with a castle, medieval towns, the grotto, and beautiful hikes all within easy drives. Giovanna was responsive and very easy to work with. The kitchen is well equipped, and we were happy to spend some time relaxing and cooking at "home" after lots of sightseeing elsewhere in Italy.

Spacious house wonderful views

  • 5 of 5

A lovely house with plenty of room and very well equipped for practically all our needs. We were a family of two adults and three kids (10,13 and 14) and had masses of room. The pool is a generous size and would have kept everyone happy, but we were unfortunate with the weather so it was handy to have Wifi and TV to keep the younger lot occupied while we could find our own space to read.

The views are breathtaking and we loved watching the sun go down behind the mountains each evening. There is plenty of space to explore and we saw deer and the odd fox making a foray after fallen fruit from the trees in the garden.

We can join others in recommending Il Pozzo (superb food but again book ahead!) but our favourite was up the hill in Chiozza, Bar/Pizzeria La Grotta. Fabulous no frills food in a very relaxed atmosphere. One evening we were there you could have joined a Canasta tournament in the square outside, another evening we were invited to take part in a ping-pong/volley ball(!) tournament there.

To visit we would recommend the fortress in Verrucole, the Grotta del Vento, and the beautiful medieval bridge in Castiglione -a short walk from the town. (You can walk to this from Chiozza by joining one of the walkers' routes below that town, taking you through smallholdings and forest (magical) in less than the time it takes to drive it). Great walks around San Pellegrino too.

We loved it!

Fabulous relaxing holiday.

  • 5 of 5

As the particulars said this villa is situated in a very rural location down a long track and we were rather nervous about what we might find at the end of it! Much to our delight the photos of this property on the website do not do it justice. It sits high on the hillside enjoying spectacular views across the valley to the mountains beyond. The property itself is traditional in type, very spacious, well maintained and spotlessly clean with all the usual necessary bits and bobs as well as books, games, internet access and telly ( not that the telly was ever on, even with two teenagers in tow!)

The large pool has gorgeous views from both in it and beside it. We spent most of our time in the pool but on the days we did venture away it was a very simple operation to get the train to Lucca where we cycled around.

Giovanna, the English speaking manager was most helpful answering all the questions we fired at her including those on the local flora and fauna!

Eating out did of course have to involve a trip in the car but it was only ten minutes to a local restaurant and the food was definitely worth the journey. The local shops were adept at understanding our dreadful attempts at Italian and we generally came away with what we wanted as well as some free stuff! Think this may have been due to our entertainment value.

There is also a well stocked local supermarket.

I would not hesitate to recommend this villa to friends and family who wanted a quiet relaxing holiday . We will definitely be back.

"absolutely wonderful with breathtaking views"

  • 5 of 5

Col Di Maturaia is an exceptional property. It is lovingly cared for and retains lots of rustic features which we found charming. The views from the house are utterly breathtaking. The property is remote yet it certainly makes you feel away from it all and the pool is amazing! We are a family of 5 and we had the best holiday we have ever had, the local are is stunning, the people warm and welcoming and the house was very clean and we enjoyed exploring it. Giovanna was charming and extremely helpful, I have already recommended this property to family and friends and was actually going to contact Houses in Tuscany as I think they could show more photos of the pool and the incredible views. Thank you.

Car: necessary

Situated down 1.3 km of track road, the villa is peacefully situated, & benefits from stunning views over the walled mediaeval village of Castiglione and the village of Pieve Fosciana. The property is set in extensive grounds, with meadows, olive groves & fruit trees. A real rural retreat, yet situated only a 15 minute drive from the market town of Castelnuovo di Garfagnana with its shops, bars, restaurants, famous Thursday morning market, and train station for easy exploring. Closer, is the village of Pieve Fosciana with its excellent restaurant and wonderful delicatessen selling home made take away Italian food.

For days out exploring, the villa is 1 h/1 h 10 min from Lucca; 90 min from Pisa; 1 h 40 min from Florence. Barga is a half hour drive. The real beauty of the area however are the wonderful mediaeval hilltop villages dotted around the landscape, the unspoilt nature of the countryside, and the local fresh produce/cheap eating out.
