Description

Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday home in Abiquiu

House, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath, (Sleeps 1-4)

Now Martinez Casita opened also for short term rentals.

Conveniently located next to Barranca Plaza Casita!

Barranca is an old Hispanic hamlet just west of Abiquiu above the Chama River. On its small plaza there are a few adobe houses, one of which is a very charming two bedroom, one bath vacation home.

The thick adobe walls have built-in traditional nicho's. The dining area comes with traditonal banco's and throughout the casita are tiled and wooden floors. A woodstove gives you great comfort in the winter. The thick walls keeps the house cool in the summer.

A large garden with fruit trees surrounds the casita.

In Barranca you will find a lively creek coming from the mountains. Follow the spring-fed creek up-stream and enter the Santa Fe National Forest with sensational views of the Abiquiu valley and the surrounding mountain lands. Badlands with goblin-like formations are nearby. The Chama River, along which are cattle ranches, is great for fishing.

The casita is just minutes from Georgia O'Keeffe's home and a short drive from the Piedra Lumbre basin. Ghost Ranch is worth many visits and don't forget to drive out into the Chama River canyon to hike or visit the Benedictine Monastery.

The Chama River Wilderness is paradise for explorers.

The acequia, the traditional Hispanic community water system, is still held in high regard in Barranca. The mayordomo decides who irrigates when. The casita’s garden can be irrigated on Saturdays.

Great day trips can be made to Ojo Caliente Mineral Hot Springs, Taos en Taos Pueblo, the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge, Santa Fe, Los Alamos, Chama (with the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad), Bandelier National Monument, Chaco Culture National Historic Park, Valle Grande, etc. etc.

Hiking all throughout Georgia O'Keeffe's country side. Ghost Ranch, where Ms O'Keeffe had her studio, is just around the corner, Fishing in Abiquiu Lake or the Chama River, Hunting in Santa Fe and Carson National Forests (offices for obtaining permits in nearby El Rito and Espanola), Sightseeing all through the Canones Canyon and Piedra Lumbre valley, Boating and Waterskiing in Abiquiu Lake, Rafting on the Chama River. You'll find restaurants in nearby Abiquiu, El Rito, Espanola.

Each year in October - Columbus Days Weekend - Abiquiu has its Abiquiu Studio Tour. A great time to enjoy the changing colors of our cottonwood trees and art by local artists. You can visit about 60 artists in their Abiquiu studios, of which at least 5 of them are within walking distance of Barranca Plaza Casita.

The 21st annual Abiquiu Studio Tour will be October 11, 12 and 13, 2014. Tour maps available throughout Abiquiu.

Family gatherings and reunions:

Both Barranca Plaza Casita and Martinez Casita offer full privacy. Yet since the casitas are sitting together on one end of Barranca Plaza, they form an ideal gathering place for groups of eight family members or old school friends. BBQ facilities are provided and there are great shadowy spots to linger under the trees. Special rates are available when both casitas are rented.

Thank you for making us feel so at home in your lovely casita - the perfect place to explore this beautiful area. We enjoyed Ghost Ranch, the Puye Cliff Dwellings and Ojo Caliente - all places we've never visited before in our trips to your beautiful state.

And, we had a wonderful dinner at El Farolito - thanks for recommending it!

Relaxing retreat

  • 5 of 5

I stayed here last fall and came back. We rented both casitas this time for a great women's retreat. I love New Mexico. It is beautitul here. Floyd has done a wonderful job with his properties. Comfortable bed and all amenities in the kitchen. I will be back for sure in the near future. Lots of beautiful places to go from here. We went to Echo Amphitheatre near Ghost Ranch one day. Stunning! The family is welcoming and very respectful. I suggest that you stay here :-)

Perfect for the weekend get away

  • 5 of 5

I would recommend this Casita to anyone staying in the area. It was a wonderful get away and all of the amenities were more than accommodating and so conveniently located. The pictures don't do justice to just how beautiful the location is and reasonably priced as well. So glad we were able to book this Casita! The perfect romantic get away for that special occasion!

Charming House in a Hiker's Paradise

  • 5 of 5

What a lovely place. So glad we found it. My wife and I stayed a week and were sad to leave. The casita is charming and comfortable; the surrounding countryside is a hiker's paradise. (Though what we do is more like "outdoor wandering" with binoculars and camera in hand.) Every day our minds were blown away by the stunning beauty. The mountains and cliffs and rock formations -- Wow! The Abiquiu area has got to be one of the most gorgeous on earth.

One word of prudence: the rental is located in a small cluster of “real” New Mexico homes. This may not appeal to some people. Residents drive pickup trucks, cattle graze in the plaza, dogs and roosters greet the new day with distant barking and crowing. That said, to those travelers interested in truly “getting away,” this place is a gem. I know we will return.

The Perfect Vacation!

  • 5 of 5

As soon as I walked into the casita, I knew it was going to be perfect--and it was. My only regret was that we didn't book it for a longer time. The casita was just as we had seen in the photos--and then some. Little touches and details here and there really made it special--lighted nichos, hardwood floors and saltillo tiles, viga ceilings. And every amenity we needed: fully stocked kitchen, ample linens, an INCREDIBLY comfortable bed. And satellite TV (I don't even have this at home) and wifi--which made it handy to investigate and book other aspects of our trip. Ninfa, the on-site manager, was incredibly helpful and kind.

The location is perfect--close to the highway and nearby sights but far enough away where NO highway noise can be heard. Back roads lead to Abiquiu Lake and also to a nearby creek and waterfall. And we loved having the neighbors' dogs around. They were very sweet and friendly.

I have already told so many people about this place (which I may come to regret if it becomes too popular!) and we are already planning a longer visit later this fall. We can't wait!
