An Exceptional Highland Escape in Gairloch at Any Time of Year
Sundial Properties is a family owned business specialising in building and restoring exceptional properties in Scotland. The company is owned and run by William Gray Muir, whose mother's family have lived in Gairloch since 1494.
Camilla purchased this House in 2018
Why Camilla chose Gairloch
After a lifetime of treasured family holidays in Gairloch the chance arose to create a really lovely house on one of the best sites in Wester Ross. Skye-based Dualchas Architects have a stellar reputation for designing sleek contemporary homes in Highland settings. Their brief was to create a discreet home that sat comfortably in the landscape and made maximum use of the outstanding views. We think they have excelled themselves here.

Picturesque Highland Hideaway
Propery was very modern and well equipped with a good working kitchen great for indoor cooking. Not sure if it has a bbq for summer if it doesn't it would be a good addition although Scotland does not always get the best weather. The log burner in the lounge was cosy for winter days. Underfloor heating worked well especially in the bathrooms. Beds were very comfortable and the choice of bedding types was a nice extra. If I was to criticise anything it would be the lounge seating there was not enough of it for adults to all sit together and it was rather uncomfortable and a bit low if you are disabled or like our daughter 6 months pregnant. Seating in TV room was similar. The view from the lounge was spectacular just a pity it rained so much when we were there. Heidi was just the best and answered any queries we had promptly she is a treasure, in all the places we have rented we have not had a housekeeper quite like her.
Gairloch is beautiful we had many lovely walks around the area. I am Scottish and visited the Gairloch lots of times when I was a child but did not appreciate how lovely it was. The shops and restaurants all close in the winter which is a shame, we have been to Iceland in the winter and they keep everything open for the tourists. I can't help but think that the highlands are missing out on some good income by closing as the restaurant that were open were very busy. I know you cant do much about any of that but I just thought I would mention it anyway.
Would we return or recommend the property the answer is yes but maybe at another time of year. Thank you for allowing us to rent the Lighthouse.
Thank you for choosing to stay at the Lighthouse and for your kind review. It is a shame that the weather was not better for your visit - that we sadly cannot control! In stormy conditions the view across the loch can be wonderful to watch as you sit beside the woodburning stove.
I am sorry that your daughter struggled with the sofa in the living room and the study, neither are unusually low and both are down-filled, so can be plumped up if needed. We hoped that with the armchair, the four-seater sofa, the padded stools, the beanbag and the comfortable dining chairs we had provided sufficient seating for guests in the living room.
Sadly, because of the real fire risk to the house and the headland, we are not able to have a barbecue, but there is nothing to stop guests taking portable barbecues to the beach for a picnic in warmer weather. Summer meals can still be enjoyed at the dining table outside on the deck, having been prepared in the kitchen.
We hope you might return in the warmer months and enjoy the wide-range of activities and restaurants open then. It is a shame that many businesses in the area are seasonal, but many guests find that there is a real pleasure in the peace and remoteness of the location when the tourists leave. Because there is a strong rural community there are normally things going on throughout the winter and newcomers are always welcome - the local Gale Centre Cafe is a good place to start exploring (and produces delicious cake!)
Amazing property in a stunning location
The Lighthouse was the perfect retreat for three friends wanting a relaxing escape from busy lives. The house was spotless and well equipped and the location is perfect for exploring the surrounding area. The owner and housekeeper were friendly and very helpful and we’d love to come back soon!
We are delighted that you and your friends had a happy and relaxing weekend and enjoyed the unseasonably good weather. I hope you have had safe journeys home and back to work - the Lighthouse is always there should you need to escape the rat race and flee to the tranquillity of the Highlands.
You will not stay in a more comfortable well appointed home in Wester Ross.
Four friends came to stay in this beautiful area of North west Scotland and were fortunate to discover this recently completed 21st century home built overlooking the Loch and the mountains beyond. The Lighthouse exceeded expectations, delivering on all elements of comfortable modern living from large comfortable beds and modern power showered bathrooms to the best equipped kitchen you will ever have a chance to practice that speciality in.
The living area is wide and long with comfortable seating to enjoy the views, a log burner for colder evenings, balconies running on two sides ,and has a room off for the boxed set or movie that you never had a chance to catch up on.
Well installed wifi throughout the house allowed for any amount of remote working streaming or calling.
A short walk down to the dock for provisions or across the road for a pint, we found there were plenty of reasons NOT to leave the house to explore this wonderful area!
Reviews such as yours make all the work that went into designing and building the Lighthouse worthwhile. We are so pleased that you enjoyed cooking in the kitchen. We wanted it to be a pleasure rather than a chore. I am afraid that we cannot promise the same tropical weather conditions should you visit in Autumn again, but please do return. You and your friends will always be welcome.
Beautiful property and location.
This was a stunning house and beautiful part of Scotland. Can’t wait to visit again.
Thank you for your kind comments about the house and the area. We will look forward to your next visit.
