Along the river path, we find areas equipped for bathing and refreshment (Lido Valsalva and Ponte Alidosi).
The environment is characterized by lush chestnut woods and lends itself particularly to hiking, tourism and mountain biking.
The Castel del Rio chestnuts are protected by an exclusive brand. Their cultivation is promoted and protected by the Castanicoltori Consortium which brings together the main producers of the Alta Valle del Santerno.
The Santerno river
The Santerno river (99 km in total) was born at the Futa pass and flows along its valley for 68 km. The mountain and hilly section is considered one of the most interesting of all the Tuscan-Romagnolo Apennines. The river is characterized by the rocky walls of its meanders, the steep banks, the waters rich in birdlife and the variety of geological phenomena. The Santerno has dug its deep course between Pleistocene clays (from 5 to 2 million years), plasters and marly-arenaceous formations.
For all these reasons, the Santerno river is an important tourist resource of Castel del Rio. From the border with Tuscany, along the river path, we find areas equipped for bathing and refreshment, but also for fishing. There is a "No kill" area that offers excellent catches of barbel and chub. The Santerno lends itself well to the practice of river canoeing: the quality of the water and the course flow are ideal for this sport during the months from February to April-May. The Santerno offers in fact 25 km of uninterrupted route and is often canoeable even from October to January.

Routes for MTB
Ring of Valmaggiore and Monte Battaglia
From the village of Castel del Rio, crossing the Alidosi Bridge, you reach the Guasteto road, uphill gravel, which leads to the ridge between Senio and Santerno. Follow the road on the ridge and, just before the church of Valmaggiore, turn left onto the road that leads to Baffadi and S. S. 306. Follow it for a short distance in the direction of Casola Valsenio, then turn left towards San Ruffillo, from where you quickly reach the Rocca di Monte Battaglia. Backwards, the ridge road, traveled in a southerly direction, leads to the junction with the Guasteto road which, downhill, leads quickly to Castel del Rio.
Sport and Relaxation
The Castel del Rio sports facilities are located close to the center. Used in the summer period by institutions, associations and teams from the provinces and regions bordering the private sector - tennis, beach volleyball, dragon park, swimming pool, for sports retreats and summer holidays.
At Castel del Rio, the cuisine is based on the nuances of three different gastronomic traditions: Emilian, Romagnola and Tuscan cuisine coexist in the gastronomic traditions of this territory for hundreds of years.
As in all mountain territories the cuisine is traditionally linked to the local agricultural economy and enhanced by the flavors of the forest and undergrowth, such as mushrooms, truffles, blueberries, blackberries and other aromas.
The local product par excellence is the Brown of Castel del Rio, fruit of the highest quality, which has characterized this territory and the whole of the upper Valle del Santerno. It is noticeably different from the most common chestnuts in terms of size and its sweetest and most fragrant taste. Easy to preserve, they are an absolutely biological gastronomic delicacy, a gift of sun and earth, produced with the utmost respect for the environment.
The brown can be consumed cooked in special pans directly on the fire (brusé) or boiled in water (ballotte); with the boiled chestnut purée we prepare the typical sweets and the "Capaltéz", the first typical local dish; with the flour obtained from the dried chestnuts, the "Castagnaccio", the "Polenta dolce", the pastry for tagliolini, donuts, fritters and other typical desserts are prepared. The Marroni al Rhum, the Marroni Marmalade and the "Maroncello" liqueur
