The City of London embodies the capital's mix of tradition and change. Between the buzz of the West End and historic Southwark, bordered by lively markets, and close to the hippest of hangouts, a stay in a London City apartment fulfils every vacation need. It's a cinch to reach any part of London - a stroll or a swift tube trip and you’re at London’s most photo-friendly icons, its smartest shops and newest nightspots.
With cutting-edge culture, contemporary architecture, and the cut and thrust of the world’s leading financial institutions all around you, it’s easy to forget that you’re in London’s oldest part. History echoes on every corner. Pack a pair of sturdy walking shoes and take to the streets to see Saint Paul's Cathedral, the Tower of London, and ancient Smithfield, where what’s now a thriving meat market once staged public executions.
The City by night is among the most jaw-dropping sights in London, with its towering skyscrapers and stunning illuminated churches. Around the edges are some of the best arts and entertainment venues in London. When sharp-suited bankers head home after balancing the world’s books, nightlife in nearby Shoreditch and Hoxton hots up, with eating choices from casual dining to upscale bars.
You’ll definitely eat well here in the fast-beating heart of the finance world. Fabulous cafes and restaurants keep white-collar workers from going hungry, some housed in glittering towers, some discreetly hidden behind ornate façades. What could be more British than traditional fish and chips? We think Poppies serves up the best fish and chips in London City, and we’re probably right because it’s won awards for its well-priced, perfectly-cooked fish suppers. It sells jellied eels too, for a real London street food snack.
The Hawksmoor is an intimate setting for a leisurely British breakfast, brunch or leisurely lunch. Just reading the menu might have you loosening your waistband. Go for the Hawksmoor Special – a real all-day breakfast, with smoked bacon, meaty mutton sausages, black pudding and bubble-and-squeak. There’s a branch at Spitalfields too.
Dirty Dick’s is world-famous for pub grub in London, and for a lively London night out. Live bands, comedy nights and more – fun in a traditional setting - and just a stone’s throw from Liverpool Street station.
While away an evening at Vertigo, a chic champagne bar at a dizzying height. It’s not just the bubbly that leaves visitors a little light-headed. Its bar food menu will keep you fed while you admire one of London’s most spectacular views. Be sure to book- it’s popular.
My apartment is super-convenient to get around London. Liverpool St Station is just 6 minutes walk away. From here you can be in London's West End - including Covent Garden, Oxford St., Piccadilly Circus, etc. within 20 minutes.
If you're travelling by train, Liverpool Street station has Overground and National Rail Services as well.
The entire area is fabulously served by plenty of buses.
