Historic 1910 Mailander House seen on the final show in 1st season Fixer Upper.

Bedrooms 3
Space 1,600 sq ft
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 - 3 nights

About the property

Set on 1/3 acre and mature trees provides a relaxing base for your adventures.

This is the 'bicycle house' seen on the final episode of season 1 of Fixer Upper. It is perfect for groups up to four people, but no more. Working with Jo-jo and Chip was super fun and we really enjoy what they have done - we want to share this amazing experience with others. Built in 1910 by the Mailanders, who came from Germany to build a furniture factory in Waco. The home features beautiful floors made from cocobolo, a type of rosewood, and quarter-sawn oak. Eleven-foot ceilings and extensive windows provide a feeling of spaciousness and the house is always filled with light.

Mailander House features two large bedrooms, one with a king bed and one with two twin beds and two bathrooms; one large and one small. The office also has a twin bed. The front sitting room has wonderful afternoon light and offers a comfortable evening gathering place. With three fireplaces guests can experience the ambiance of early 20th-century living (while these are no longer used and the house has a modern energy efficient heating/cooling system). A formal dining room offers comfortable seating, while a fully-equipped kitchen provides anything a chef needs to create wonderful meals.

Large front and side covered porches offer cozy seating, while an expansive back deck invites morning coffee or evening dining. Seasonal herbs and veggies in the large garden are available for guests to use and enjoy.

Bikes are available free for our guests, courtesy of our friends at Welhous Bikes, whom you can visit about one block from the Silos on 6th St. We proudly offer guests locally- roasted coffee from our friends at Apex Coffee (who also own Dichotomy coffee house downtown, on Austin Ave. between 5th and 6th).

If anyone in the party likes to hike or mountain bike, there are great trails in Cameron Park, just a mile from the front door of Mailander House. The Brazos River Walk, just two blocks away, offers a quiet morning constitutional or peaceful evening sunset stroll.

If we are booked for the dates that you want, please consider our friend Janice who owns the Elvis House. They have a cool story! VRBO # 1195867

"The houses of early Texans were small, but their hearts were large enough to cover all deficiencies. No candidate for hospitality was ever turned away."

About Dave Morrow

Marla grew up in rural Arkansas and learned to ride a bicycle about the time she learned to walk. The youngest of four girls, she excelled in school and later went on to study Veterinary Medicine at Texas A&M. She has practiced veterinary medicine in Waco for about 25 years. Marla is an accomplished ultra runner and triathlete, and is current national champion in her age group for the 100 km distance. Dave retired from teaching Environmental Engineering at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, CA when he married Marla a few years ago and moved to Waco. He has traveled to 47 of the 50 US states and many countries in Asia, Africa, the Antipodes, South and Central American and Europe. He is trying to figure out how to get to Antarctica to see the penguins soon! Bringing the wonderful Mailander House back to its original glory has been a very fun part of our journey.

Dave Morrow purchased this house in 2014

Why Dave Morrow chose Waco

There is no other house like Mailander. With iconic architecture, it was a landmark home when it was built in 1910. After the original family died, the home fell into neglect over the years and really needed a lot of love when we bought it. It was completely remodeled by Chip and Joanna Gaines as seen on Fixer Upper on HGTV network, last episode of the first season. The remodel came out beautifully and many of the historic features have been retained. Where it made sense, amenities such as a modern kitchen, efficient heating and cooling, and better electric lights have been added.

The Mailander House is very centrally located - its super close to Baylor, downtown, the lovely Brazos River parkway and Cameron Park. We decided to rent this house because so many people have asked. Staying in the Mailander House is pretty amazing and a one-of-a kind experience - they don't make 'em like this anymore!

What makes this house unique

It's wonderful to be so close to town but have a quiet peaceful garden retreat. Gracious river walks and parks close by offering a chance to unwind and reflect. Plus, if you are a cook, we have a-rockin' herb garden and professional grade kitchen appliances. This is the perfect place to enjoy all the fun of Waco and return to relax at the private, peaceful Mailander House. And, since its so easy to ride bicycles to Baylor Stadium, the Silos and all kinds of cool places nearby, we offer high-quality city bikes at no extra charge.

Owner's Response: You are too kind, thank you. And please do stay with us again. I might have a new list of cool things to do here - change is busting out all over and we are in the middle of a renaissance (not with Michelangelo, but still). Cheers!

Very relaxing

  • 5 of 5

We had a very nice two day stay at Dave and Marla’s Mailander house. This beautiful home was a relaxing get away in between visiting the silos and shops in Waco only a few blocks away from the silo hub. Dave is a great wealth of knowledge on the Waco area which was a great asset. Would book this home again in a heartbeat!

Dave was an amazingly accommodating host. He enthusiastically shared information regarding the property and Waco. He also provided information regarding optional tourist activities. We thoroughly enjoyed the ones we took part in. The property was very clean and comfortable. Our family highly recommends staying here.

Owner's Response: You are too kind. It is a pleasure to host guests such as yourself and we are pretty jazzed to share our wonderful old home. Thank you for the nice review, and know that our goal is to treat everyone who stays with us as an honored guest. That is how my wife expects me to treat her, so I guess you should thank Marla for training me!!!

Fun to stay in Fixer Upper house after watching it on TV. One of my favorite houses from the show.

  • 4 of 5

Wish the furnishings that JoAnna put in the house were still there. The small bath is tiny! Good place to stay if you are fan of the show.

Christmas shopping in Waco

  • 4 of 5

The location and charm of this house was great! We enjoyed sitting in the living room and going over some of the history of Waco while drinking a glass of wine. The river walk in the am was beautiful! Easy access! Loved being able to hop in our car and head to downtown and the Silos! Only 5 min😀 Also loved the yummies from Lula Janes!

Loved the Mailander Home

  • 5 of 5

I wanted to treat my wife to Waco because she loves "Fixer Upper". So I had to book the Mailander home. So thankful I pulled the trigger and made my reservations. The home is awesome and has so much character. The real gem is Dave. He came by to meet us and he gave us a great insight to the show and home. Definitely added the southern touch and helped us appreciate the home/Waco/Fixer Upper more. The home is located conveniently to downtown Waco, Magnolia Farms, Brazos River and Baylor U. Husbands if you want to score huge points with your wife reserve the home.
