Haloze is an endlessly green kingdom of serenity and beauty with a landscape of fairy tale castles, ancient woodlands, divine wines with special people, seemingly possessing a soul which never leave visitors indifferent.

On foot or by bike. Whichever option you choose you cannot choose wrong. Haloze was made for wandering on her slopes, hills and valleys slowly on foot or slightly faster and with more effort by pedalling a bike. Many tourist farms and wine shops are located along these routes. Some of them offer tasting and enjoyment of home made specialities, from bread and meat, from tünka to wine, cheese and much, much more

The hiking paths in the region offer ideal conditions for walking in the natural environment and among kind people. One of the most popular paths is undoubtedly the Haloze hiking path passing through communities of Zavr?, Cirkulane, Videm, Podlehnik and Majšperk and the castle of Borl all the way to Donacka mountain. The entire path is marked by red-and-white carnations and is divided into four stages; each stage requires 3 to 4 hours walk

Only 20 minutes from the house will bring you to the oldest town in Slovenia town, Ptuj. This lovely old town has 2000 years of history with its Romanesque and medieval architecture. Strolling through the old town it's easy to feel a connection with an age long past. But it's a town for people of all ages and tastes with many café/bars, restaurants and a large variety of shops and supermarkets. Ptuj also has the largest Terme (thermal spar and water park). The river Drava runs along the southern outskirts of the town and from Ptuj castle you will see the hills of Haloze in the distance.: Ptuj, wine cellar archives with the oldest Slovene wine from 1917, imposing castle above the city cultural and historical sights in the immediate vicinity: Mithraic temple, Dominican and Minorite monastery.

The Ptuj Lake is the largest artificial lake in Slovenia. In the summertime you can rent kayaks for rowing at Ranca, go sailing on the lake, or enter the sailing school. On city holidays you can compete in the traditional 'Ranca' boat competition on the Drava River. They also give lessons on the weekends to all ages

As well as a good selection of local organised recreational activities, hiking and cycling are very popular throughout Slovenia with many choices of mapped routes( and we can supply you bikes).

Guests at the thermal baths and wellness centre of Ptuj,(which is the largest in Slovenia) can enjoy themselves in four outdoor pools with a wave machine and a waterslide as well as two indoor pools with a whirlpool and hydrotherapy.

Horse Riding; Whether you are an experienced rider or riding for the first time, riding through beautiful clearings and around the hillsides of the town, riding on the bank of the river Drava or in a horse-drawn carriage, are activities that should not be missed. Horse-riding clubs and some tourist farms offer the opportunity to ride horses whether you are a professional or a beginner.

Boating/Water sports; Ptuj's lake is the largest artificial lake in Slovenia. Its surface measures 4,1km2. In summer you can rent a kayak or rowing boat by the lake in Ranca or even sail on the lake, either alone or by registering at the school of sailing.

Just a short walk from the old town is the golf course, which is special for its diverse grounds and numerous water obstacles. The course extends over 50 hectares and is well known for its green plots and water features One of the best courses in Slovenia. The golf course has a lot to offer; from its demanding 18 holes to the beautiful surroundings, including a magnificent view of the townscape

Tennis; Ptuj and its surroundings have a large selection of tennis courts, all in good condition and close by Ptuj's thermal baths.

Jurjev sejem (George’s Fair) opens the season for traditional fairs in Ptuj. It takes place on the streets and squares of the town on April 23. There are approximately 150 manufacturers and sellers from all over Slovenia that gather on this fair and offer a great variety of products. On this day a Medieval market is also organized.

Ožbaltov sejem (Oswald's Fair) takes place on the streets and squares of the town on August 5. This is also the day of the Ptuj Municipality, so there are many organized events all over the town.

Katarinin sejem (Catherine's Fair) takes place on the streets and squares of the town on November 25. There is the largest number of sellers offering the greatest variety of goods at this very fair. This is also the fair where second hand goods are mostly traded.

Cvetli?ni sejem (Floral Fair)

In spring and in days before November 1 two floral fairs take place in Ptuj.

Pustni sejem (Carnival Fair takes place in days before the Carnival and during the Carnival. The date is determined according to day of Shrove Tuesday. Usually it comes after the Candlemas, which falls on February 2 every year. The goods offered are carnival accessories and decorations.

In December there is also Christmas and New Year Fair. You can visit the stands with dried fruit, Christmas decorations and holiday gifts.

About Una Watts or Chris Reich

Chris and Una met some years ago in Cambridge UK, Chris being a school teacher with a love of drawing and painting, Una working in the care sector with a love of nature and a more traditional way of life. Both realizing that they shared the same dream of one day changing their lifestyle, trying something new, learning new skills and leaving the hustle and bustle of a demanding city life. Una touring around Slovenia on holiday with her sister stumbled upun Haloze, so taken with its unique natural beauty immediately fell in love, arriving home to tell Chris that she had not only found their new home but had purchased it in the lovely hills of Haloze. Chris and Una moved to Slovenia in 2007 and through all the trials and tribulations of a new life have not looked back since.

Una Watts or Chris Reich purchased this house in 2006

Why Una Watts or Chris Reich chose Europe

Haloze is one of driest regions of Slovenia topped with one of the lowest crime rates in Europe it is so easy to enjoy long sunny days, spectacular Autumn time, snowy white Winters followed by the beautiful blossom on the wild fruit trees growing freely around her hills and valleys.

What makes this house unique

Built into the hillside with spectacular views all around, offers an intimate experience of Haloze and its inhabitants. Sitting on the large covered veranda observing the wildlife in the forested hills, admiring the small local vineyards. Walking around the tops of the hills looking down into its valleys filled with flora and fauna is a delight. For more adventure, hiking into the ancient forests with the small streams and brooks is a magical experience for all to enjoy.

Had a wonderful time

  • 5 of 5

We like walking and cycling very much both in the UK and Europe, eg France. But this was something we hadn't expected. The hills are quite beautiful and different to anything we've previously experienced. There are many possible walks locally. There's also a lot of cycle routes ( its very popular in Slovenia). Bikes were supplied from the owners and we went on some super rides all around, including the lovely old town of ptuj and around its lake.

We experienced the Therme (thermal pool) in Ptuj - great fun. We also explored by train and we went to the capital Ljubljana - a beautiful city.

The owners were particularly great, making sure we had everything at the start, advising us with walks, etc and always checking if we were ok - great service!

The house was very clean and comfortable with all the amenities advertised. Super views from the balcony.

The friendlyness of the owners and local people was so important for us in a new environment.

Would highly recommend this place for a stay,.

Not for seniors.

  • 3 of 5

We are in our 60s and 70s and this place is just too remote if one has mobility issues at all. This place is well suited to those younger people who are physically fit and want a place to relax away from all the hustle. This is like an amusement park ride. The last portion of the road in is gravel, narrow, steep, and along a ridge line. Once you get to the unit, the sleeping quarters are completely separate and are only accessed from the outside. This might be a walkers paradise if you are young and fit. It is anything but if you are an older senior. If it wasn't for the small bathroom with toilet downstairs, we would have even stayed one night. We left three days early because it was just too remote and quaint for us.

Owner's Response: What A Shame you never discussed your mobility problems with us before you booked. The propriety is not wheel chair friendly nor is the region of Haloze. . We get lots of people in their Sixties and Seventies who thoroughly enjoy this beautiful part of Slovenia. The road to lavender house one must drive over the hills and through ancient forests with spectacular views down in the valley below as seen in the photos! Lavender house is built into the hillside with the living quarters on the first level and bedrooms on the bottom level which can be accessed through a external staircase. This is the traditional way of this region. In our write up we attempt to convey an accurate picture of the property but we will re-look at it to ensure that it really does make it clearer that it is not somewhere for people with "limited mobility". We are truly sorry if you felt that our advert mislead you in any way. We invite all guests to ask us questions before they book in which we are very happy to reply to the best of our ability. May I take this opportunity to wish you both a very merry Christmas and the best of luck with all your future travel. Regards

Amazing views - lovely people

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful week at Lavender House. Beautiful setting with amazing views. During our week we did many things, visited Ptju,Trakoscan in Croatia, and Varazdin. Our favourite places were driving out into the wine growing regions, very rural, very beautiful and lovely wines.. by far the best white wines we have ever tasted. You just have one problem... by all accounts you do not export to the UK!!! Perhaps you could look into this!!. The food was just great too and such good value for money, we went to so many places it is hard to say which was our favourite but best value was in the main restaurant in Ptju.

Chris and Una were just great popping up a few times to make sure we were OK as did the two lovely dogs who dropped by of their own accord!!!

The house was beautifully clean and had everything that we could have needed. The neighbour was very kind too bringing us freshly pressed grape juice and grapes making us feel welcome.

We would definitely recommend this lovely little hideaway and the beautiful region that it is in.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your lovely review! We are delighted that you enjoyed your visit here in Haloze. As regards exporting the wines, most of the small scale winegrowers here produce only a few hundred litres just for the love of it. The wine is "from the heart" so to speak. But they are always enthusiastic for visitors to come and share the fruits of their labours. In fact the whole of this region sets aside a day of celebration for the new wine. This is 11th of November every year. Many thanks.

Weekend stay with dogs

  • 5 of 5

We spent 3 nights at the house which is located in a lovely hill-side. I strongly recommend for those who would like to stay at a quiet, peaceful place in the nature which is near to Maribor. It was ideal for dogs and owners were happy as well with the 4 legged guests.

Great holiday

  • 5 of 5

A big thankyou to Chris and Una, we had a great holiday- would recommend it to all. We stayed for two weeks last April, talk about a spectacular Spring with great weather too. We were luckly enough to get there to watch the surrounding forest come to life. What a sight, with blossom everywhere! The accomodation was lovely and clean. One of the smaller places we have stayed in but just perfect for two. The veranda makes up for it with lots of room to sit, relax and BBQ while enjoying the local wines with lovely views all round. The local beer Lasko is good too. The local people are so friendly, we even got invited round to dinner by one! Lots of lovely walks. We walked up Donacka Mountain and another was a hike over the hills and into Croatia. We took a lot of day trips out in the car, Bled, Krast, Piran, Graz, Zabreg- enjoyed them all. The Lorgar Valley Slovenia and the falling Lakes Croatia is a must see, The problem is choosing, because everwhere we went was so pretty, the train journey from Ptuj to Ljubljana is like something out of a fairytale. There is a great resturant on the river drava ptuj and maribor is another lovely old town. Can't say enough about the place. We hope to be back again to experince the Autumn hopefully- we have been told the grape picking time is something not to be missed!

Owner's Response: We are delighted that you enjoyed your stay with us in the lovely hills of Haloze. Spring is my favorite time of year here, after the white winters its so wounderful to watch the the forest come to life in all its glory and splendour. Due to popular demand we are adding a extra room which will be finished by the end of June 2012, allowing us to sleep 4/6 with the sofa bed. We look forward to your next visit and the grape picking season (we call it party time) where the local food, wine and music will be flowing for all who care to participate!

The beauty of nature

  • 5 of 5

As you sit on the balcony of Lavender House in the Haloze, you are surrounded by the beauty of nature; from the nearby flowers and vines that surround the house to the more distant skyline that lifts itself out of the dense forests in a surrounding collection of dramatic peaks. The sights, sounds and ambience of nature both relax and invigorate.

Nearby, there is the historic town of Ptuj, with plenty of restaurants and bars, small shops and a market. The water park in Ptuj is spectacular and a great day out, and very reasonably priced.

I would definitely recommend this holiday home to anyone, including my friends and relatives. The house is clean and well maintained, with a very spacious balcony and seating area. The local people are very friendly, and the locally produced wines are delicious.

We think that when you arrive in Haloze you may not want to wander far, but in case you do we are ideally located for many possible day trips both in Slovenia and and to the nearby countries Hungary, Croatia and Austria.

Here are just a few examples.

In Slovenia;

Maribor is the second largest town in Slovenia - 30 minutes drive from the house.

Celje, in the Savinjske region - 40 minutes drive.

It was originally a celtic town built where two rivers meet and is a gateway to the heart of the Kamniške-Savinjske Alps, where can be found Logarska Dolina noted as one of the most beautiful alpine valleys in the whole of Europe. Celje Old Castle is well worth a visit, especially during one of the many events held there during the year.

Ljubljana, the capital - 1hr 30mins drive.

Because of its architectural beauty, Ljubljana is still considered to be a hidden gem of Europe. Its has a picturesque castle with views and the river Ljubljanica, with attractive bridges and old embankments, passes through the centre. There are many bars and a Sunday market along the embankment. Like any capital there are many sites, activities and entertainments for all.

Note, that Slovenia has a reliable and economical rail network and all the above are easily accessed by train from Ptuj.

Croatia -Literally 10 minutes drive to the border - (you will need your passports).

Zagreb, the capital - about 45minutes drive, where you can explore virtually all of the main architectural and religious sites by foot plus a nice shopping centre. Very popular with tourists.

Varazdin - about 45 minutes. It's an attractive old town, noted for its baroque architecture and is a prestigious centre for baroque music with events organised through September, can't say we've experienced it but apparently the night-life in the city is something else.

Croatia's Plitvice Lakes National Park - around 2 hours and a half drive. Its jaw dropping and not to be missed! (We've been 3 times). Its aptly known as the 'fallen lakes', with seemingly endless cascading water falls. There are bordered walks and a pretty boat trip from one section to another. Take a picnic.

Graz is about 80 minutes drive. This is the second largest city in Austria with an architectural centre dating back to the 13th century and has been a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site since 1999. With an extensive shopping area, many restaurants and an extensive events calender, it is well worth a trip. Also easily accessible by train.

Klagenfurt is about 2 and half hours drive. It is located on the eastern edge of Lake Wörthersee and is known as the 'Rose of Lake Wörthersee'. A very popular holiday destination for Austrians offering a huge number sporting and recreation activities as well as regional food and night entertainment.

Klagenfurt has an international airport (good prices) and it might be worth considering it as your entry point into Slovenia and as your first or final visit.

Hungary - about 1 hour to Lendava in Slovenia, just on the Hungarian border. Lenti is a small relaxed town just a little further inside Hungary with history dating back to medieval times. Its noted for its Thermal bath and St George Energy park and famous throughout Europe for its medicinal water used in treating skeletal disorders. Lenti is a gateway to Hungary should you want to explore further.

Most of our suggestions here are from our own experience of visits and of course you can find many websites with much more information on these places.
