In an elevated and private position on the wooded hillside skirting the charming village of Gavalohori, Villa Halepi commands panoramic views across the village and olive trees in the valley below to Souda Bay in the north and The White Mountains in the south. Part of Villa Halepi’s charm is the undoubtedly rural location that is within walking distance of the village centre that is not only picturesque and interesting, but also full of local life and character. A 10 minute stroll to the village in the day enables you to stock up on all of the essentials including freshly baked bread, croissants, pies, and locally grown fruit and vegetables, whilst at night you can have a delicious and inexpensive meal under the local mulberry trees on the village square. The walk back to the villa is uphill but after a few glasses of local wine you probably won’t notice at all!
Wonderful sunsets can be seen from the villa, which has been cleverly designed so that all but one of the bedrooms, both of the living rooms, all of the balconies, terraces and the pool area benefit from the gorgeous views. The ground floor of the villa has a separate entrance and is a completely self-contained 2 bedroom apartment that is ideal for guests who are elderly or disabled. Villa Halepi offers excellent flexibility of accommodation and is therefore a superb choice for larger parties, sharing families, or groups of friends who are looking to holiday together while still retaining the option of privacy and independence. Couples and smaller parties have also been taken into consideration with our low season prices which give them the option of renting the main 2 floors of the villa without the ground floor apartment which would remain locked. (This option is not available in mid season or high season when the villa is only rented out with 4 bedrooms).
Nestled at the end of an unmade country track, behind a natural stone wall and a large gate, Villa Halepi is backed by a forest of pine trees. The ground falls away on 2 sides of Villa Halepi’s grounds, protecting the unspoilt views to the sea and the mountains, and ensuring the privacy of the guests. The enclosed, landscaped grounds are adorned with flowerbeds and typically Mediterranean plants and trees that include geraniums, roses, mesenbryanthum, polygala, margarita daisies, olive, orange and pear trees. The lower terrace has a lawn and a children's play area which the younger members of the family will love. Creamy coloured local stone has been used for the walls, archways, and crazy paving on the extensive terraces which surround the villa. The pool area has sun-beds and umbrellas, and all of the terraces and balconies are equipped with outdoor furniture.
Recently built in contemporary style, the interior throughout is bright and well equipped with comfortable furnishings and eye-catching fabrics, and is perfectly suited to relaxed summer living. Occupying much of the middle floor of the villa, which is accessed either by a ramp from the large private parking area or via steps from the pool terrace, is a large L-shaped living room and kitchen. Sliding doors open out from the living area to a covered dining terrace, and from the upstairs bedrooms to an open balcony, both of which look out over the entire area to the bay and mountains. All modern comforts have been provided at Villa Halepi, including free WIFI internet service, satellite TV’s, DVD players, 2 dishwashers and 2 washing machines, wood effect aluminium doors, windows, and shutters with mosquito screens, and air conditioning units in all the bedrooms and the living rooms. There is a fireplace in the main living room, and the A/C units also double up as heaters for the cooler nights at the start and end of the season. The modern bathroom and shower rooms are all beautifully tiled and the water is heated by either solar panel or a back-up immersion heater.
Villa Halepi is exclusively booked by Frankie Miles. Frankie runs Villas Crete Holidays which is a registered Tourist Office, based in Hampshire, England and Almyrida, Crete. Whilst most travel companies cover many different countries and/or areas of Greece and Crete, we at Villas Crete Holidays only work in the North West of Crete and we specialise in the Apokoranas region, just east of the historic Venetian town of Chania. The Apokoronas (including the villages of Almyrida, Kalives, Kokkino Horio, Plaka and Gavalohori) has long been a popular destination for holiday makers seeking a typically Greek seaside resort area that has many amenities, but is far removed from brash tourism. The area is renowned for its sandy beaches, crystal clear turquoise water, stunning views of Souda Bay and The White Mountains, excellent tavernas, and archaeological sites.
Frankie is very hands-on at Villas Crete Holiday. She has worked with rental villas on Crete for more than 18 years and has written the best selling guide book "Crete on the Road". The book includes detailed directions and information to all the major tourist attractions, as well as many hidden sites. Also in the book is the only existing map of the National Highway showing all of the entrances/exits and distances. Frankie’s unrivalled knowledge, love of the island, and attention to detail is now being fully put to use to guarantee a fantastic holiday for our guests. Before Crete, Frankie lived all over the world. She initially came to Crete for 1 season after 12 hectic years in New York working various jobs including: office manager for the band Simply Red; production assistant to the singer Paul Simon; and booking bands such as Guns N’ Roses for The Limelight nightclub. All of this was no match, however, to the fantastic weather and food, the warmth of the Cretan people, and the exquisite natural beauty of Crete. When (very occasionally) not working, Frankie spends time helping the stray animals of Crete.
Younger children will be safe and occupied for hours playing in the wonderful children's play ground.
Despite the good privacy Villa Halepi is only 600m from the shops, and tavernas in Gavalohori. You can walk along a track and then downhill on a small country road to the village square for a delicious meal and a drink (or two) without worrying about driving home. 200m of the walk back is uphill but hopefully the local wine will have relaxed you to the point that you won't notice!
The villa has a fantastic private location in the heart of the countryside but it is only a few minutes drive from the beaches, shops and tavernas in Almyrida and 45 minutes easy drive from Chania airport.
The large grounds, and many terraces mean that the individual guests can have fun together but also spread out to enjoy quiet "me" time on their own if they want to.
Villas Crete Holidays truly are the Apokoronas Specialists as unlike other offices, 3 of the 4 members of our expert team live and work here all year round which enables us to always have completely up-to-date information about the villas, local facilities, and tourist attractions. We can help you with all aspects of your holiday including good value, reliable car hire, airport transfers, local information about shops, beaches, tavernas etc, detailed driving directions or walking directions for many routes. We can also arrange private boat hire, private boat trips, private sight-seeing flights, horse riding, water-skiing, big game fishing, guided walking, and guided coach excursions. Our office staff speak English, Greek, and a little French, and have a vast list of local contacts, and our representative in resort also speaks some Italian.
Both the company itself, and Frankie's book have been featured and recommended in articles in major British newspapers including the Sunday Mail and the Sunday Telegraph, as well as smaller publications such as Greece Magazine.
Most importantly, because we handle many villas, in the unlikely event that there is an unforeseen problem at your villa, we can usually offer you an alternative villa (although this cannot be guaranteed in high season).
We have many years experience working in tourism on Crete, and most importantly this experience is specifically related to villa rentals, which needs a very different area of expertise to other types of tourism such as walking holidays, or package holidays for the masses. We use all of our knowledge and local contacts to ensure that your holiday goes off smoothly from start to finish, from first booking the villa that is most suitable for you, to your arrival back home. When you are in resort, we are available during office hours for information, and 24 hours a day should you need medical assistance, yet we remain unobtrusive.
We rented Villa Halepi through Villascreteholidays.com whose service was flawless - we thoroughly recommend them. Lovely villa with gorgeous views. The villa description and photos were very accurate, except the views are even better than the photographs! The bathrooms at the villa are smaller than others we have stayed at, but this didn't bother us. The villa was spotless and well maintained and the friendly owners provided a really good welcome pack including a huge cake. The owners were local, so anything we needed was no trouble at all.
The villa is secluded and quiet, so this does mean a good ten minute, including an uphill, walk on the way back from the village. Driving is easy and there is plenty of parking in the square.
If we were to suggest one improvemnt it would be to provide wind protection on a terrace or by the pool so that you can enjoy the cooler nights off peak season.
We will definitely return to the vila and the area again.
Gavalochori is a very traditional village and it has great historical importance in this area. There are buildings still remaining from Byzantine, Venetian and Turkish eras, and artefacts have also been found in the area from Neolithic and Minoan Times. Many of these artefacts are now housed in the Historical and Folklore Museum which is located on one of the village’s narrow streets. On the outskirts of the village there is a lovely picnic area beneath a thicket of shady trees next to some Venetian Wells. The village square is just a 9 minute walk from Villa Halepi and is still very much the focal point of village life. The main kafenion/taverna is a beautifully renovated stone building which is run by the very friendly Monica Papatheofilo. The food and desserts here are delicious and the prices are low. Sitting under the kafenion’s shady mulberry trees and watching the world go by, is a favourite past time for both locals and visitors alike. On the opposite side of the square there is the Women’s Craft Co-operative which is trying to keep traditional handicrafts alive by making and selling products such as pottery and lace. In the village you can also find 3 more tavernas, 1 well stocked mini market, and a bakery.
Villa Halepi is just 5 minutes by car to the lovely village of Almyrida which is built around a crescent shaped sandy beach. The beach is very shallow and safe, which is good news if you have children or are not a strong swimmer. Lining the beach are many excellent tavernas, cafes and shops. Also in Almyrida there is a water sports centre which rents out kayaks, windsurfers and catamarans, a scuba diving centre, a space with pool tables and a variety of games machines, and Villas Crete Holidays for tourist information, boat trips, private boat hire, big game fishing, horse riding, private sightseeing flights in a light aircraft, and guided walking tours or coach excursions..
For those of you looking for even more activity, the historic town of Chania is only 45 minutes away by car.
