Description

Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday farmhouse in Castiglione Messer Raimondo - Casa Del Falco

2 bedroom farmhouse deep in the Abruzzan countryside.

Ideal for those wanting a quiet holiday, Casa Del Falco is a small working olive farm lying deep in the Abruzzan countryside. Casa Del Falco is situated in north Abruzzo in the province of Teramo and lies midway between the small hill towns of Castiglione Messer Raimondo and Bisenti.

The house has two good-sized bedrooms (one double, one twin) and a large living/dining area. There is a small but fully equipped kitchen and a shower room with all the facilities, including a washing machine.

Outside there is a patio garden with a magnificent view of the Apennines.

The farm is bounded by two deep, wooded 'fossa' (gullies) that provide a haven for birds and, in May/June, fireflies. Traditional farming methods mean that there is an abundance of butterflies and other local wildlife. Throughout the summer, there are lizards everywhere, crickets can be heard and there are wild flowers in profusion. The farm has a number of fruit trees, including peaches, figs, pomegranates and walnuts, which can be freely picked in season. Guests are free to wander at will around the farm.

With magnificent scenery all around, the local white roads are well suited to walkers as well as the more adventurous motorist.

Abruzzo: Abruzzo is one of the most rural and sparsely populated regions in Western Europe. Over on third of the area is either national or regional park so that the area is ideal for walkers, hikers, wildlife enthusiasts and those who just enjoy beautiful countryside. One attraction not to be missed is the Campo Imperatore, a 27 km long and 8 km wide high plain or plateau at about 2000 m height. In the early spring it is carpeted with crocuses, followed by a myriad alpine flowers.

There are also many hiilside towns with attractive medieval centres. Larger town such as Atri and Penne were originally Roman and some traces can still be found. They also have some excellent churches and museums even if they don't quite compete with Florence, Sienna or Rome. Castelli, at the foot of the Gran Sasso has been a centre for ceramic prodiction since the 16th Century, and Castel Del Monte is where much of the George Clooney film 'The American' was filmed.

Food and Drink: There are several local shops and small supermarkets selling local produce if you wish to cook your own meals. There are a number of agriturismos, usually set in country locations which are required by law to produce at least 60% of the food served. There are no printed menus just a discussion with the proprietor but typically they serve antipasta, up to 15 different appetiser dishes both hot and cold, followed by a choice of two or three pasta dishes and then the secondo piatti, usually roast lamb or a mix of roast lamb, pork, chicken and sometimes beef, with a little salad and chips. They also serve their own wine both red (Montepulciano D'Abruzzo) or white (Trebbiano)

There are also a number of good pizzerias and rosticceria where they serve rosticcini - cubes of lamb roasted over charcoal in wooden skewers.

There are two other local white wines to look out for, Pecorino and Montonico. There is a good winery, San Lorenzo, about 5km from the house.

About Peter Clegg

Diana and Peter are a retired couple living in Sheffield who fell in love with Abruzzo when visiting friends in 2004. Diana is currently taking an A level in Italian and I am struggling with conversational Italian to improve our ability to convers with our many Italian friends

Peter Clegg purchased this farmhouse in 2005

Why Peter Clegg chose Teramo

We fell in love with Casa Del Falco because of its quiet location deep in the Abruzzan countryside and the fantastic views. We also have very supportive Italian neighbours and have made a number of real friends in the area. We also love the historic centres in most of the local 'citta' in the area and the food and wine.

What makes this farmhouse unique

The house provides us with peace and quiet, fantastic views and is the perfect location for exploring the region of North Abruzzo. Picking our own olives and having them pressed at the local frantoia is hard work but also great fun. We usually have a few UK friends to help and the resulting oil is fantastic.

Guestbook comments from the owner

This was even better than the promotion, especially if you love watching

nature go by. We had visits from bats, toads and fireflies, not to mention

the lizards and saw amongst others golden oriole, buzzards and heron. The

views of the mountains and the surrounding countryside from both the house

and the patio are stunning.

Eating and groceries etc are well provided but a half hour drive away.

Similarly plenty to visit including Campo Imperatore, Atri and a number of

villages.

The owner was most helpful both with instructions and pre-queries.

We stayed for 16 days and would thoroughly recommend.

Would thoroughly recommend!

Lovely holiday home in the middle of Italian countryside. Short drive from supermarkets and local towns and villages, though I was quite happy sitting on the patio with a view of snow covered mountains.

amazingly beautiful, well equipped farm house

  • 5 of 5

A stunningly beautiful, well equipped farm house, located in a tranquil scenic location. This was our first visit to the Abruzzo region of Italy ,and regard it as being as fantastically beautiful as the northern lake scenes of Guard and Como. The house was equipped ,to suit all , with a homely feel , and music at hand to enable a leisurely break . The sounds and scents of the natural surrounding were exquisite, combined with amazing scenery gaining a 'WOW' expression from both of us . Peter and Diane explanation and travel guides were excellent to follow , allowing us memorable days of exploring . There are head turning views at every point . The roads were at times challenging , but taken carefully were exciting , and easily achievable to drive . Thank you Peter and Diane for giving us this opportunity to enjoy your peace of dreamed tranquillity , and we are recommending to friend and relatives already. Hope to visit again in the near future. Tony and Suzie Edwards.

Delightfully stunning and well equipped farm house

  • 5 of 5

We have just returned home ,following a fantastic weeks break in this stunningly beautiful ,well equipped farm house in this fantastic area of Abruzzo. This was our first visit to this region, and regard it as beautiful as the Italian lake region of Guarda and como. The views are breath-taking , and with the tranquillity of the farm house and olive groves is exquisite. The house has all that is required for a great stay, with every utensil at hand , music and media to enjoy, and warmth of the log burning fire, too enable the home from home appeal .Further afield the locals are warm and welcoming, with plenty to explore and enjoy.Peter and Diane have created a paradise, too share. The well directed explanations of the area and places of interest that were provided were of high quality and a gods send to refer too. The local roads are unique , with head turning views at every turn. Some roads are challenging ,but taken sensibly , are exciting , to explore. The wild life is evident all around. We have definitely been impressed by the area and experience, thus ,this will not be our last. We will recommend to all ,and thank Peter and Diane for the great communication and experience achieved.

A lovely house in beautiful surroundings

  • 4 of 5

Casa del Falco is a very nice and friendly house with high standards and it is carefully planned and equipped. It really look even better than the pictures! The small kitchen is so practical equipped and organized that it easily allow self-catering. The views and the sorroundings are beautiful and peaceful. The owner provides good information and service, and have taken great care to make the house homely and inviting. But the narrow roads in the area make driving around quite time-consuming, so if you want to visit larger parts of Abruzzo, you must tolerate to spend some time driving. But there are also nice places to see not so far away.

Perfect place for a relaxing and peaceful holiday

  • 5 of 5

We have been coming to this villa for our summer family holidays for the past five years and have thoroughly enjoyed it every time. Located among the hilly vineyards and olive groves, with only a forty minute drive to the east coast, the location is more than ideal. The villa is clean, spacious, well maintained and has well equipped kitchen with the only neighbours visible far in the distance from the porch. You can very easily relax in private with only nature and the local wild life keeping you company (apart from the family as well of course!). There are picturesque views surrounding the villa with plenty of opportunities to visit local sites of interests such as historic towns and local festivals. Routes are directly accessible from the villa to visit major locations such as Pompei and Rome. The owner provides excellent customer service with 24hr support if needed. We are planning to come for the sixth time this summer and highly recommend this accommodation for a relaxing holiday retreat.

Owner's Response: Thanks Anna and Stan for this. It always gives us great pleasure when others get the same enjoyment from Casa Del Falco that we ourselves do. We look forward to your next visit.

Casa Del Falco is a small working olive farm deep in magnificent Abruzzan countryside. Reached only by somewhat rutted 'white roads', it provides an authentic flavour of rural Abruzzo. Casa Del Falco is situated midway, between the hill towns of Castiglione MR and Bisenti, both with beautiful medieval centres that have escaped 'gentrification'.

There are excellent beaches at Pineto, Rosetto, Montesilvano or Silvi Marina all less than an hours drive away. Alternatively in an hour one can be deep in the Apennines, to visit the Campo Imperatore, Castel Del Monte, where much if the George Clooney film 'the American' is set and Castelli, a major centre for ceramics since the 16th Century. Other attractions near by include the medieval cities of Penne and Atri with fine museums and beautiful churches.

Abruzzo has the highest percentage of protected rural areas of anywhere in Europe (33% of its entire area). With magnificent scenery all around, the white roads are well suited to walkers as well as the more adventurous motorist. Traditional farming methods also mean that there is an abundance of butterflies and other local wildlife. The farm is bounded by two deep, wooded 'fossa' (gullies) that provide a haven for birds and, in May/June, fireflies. Throughout the summer, there are lizards everywhere, crickets can be heard and there are wild flowers in profusion. The farm has a number of fruit trees, including peaches, figs, pomegranates and walnuts, which can be freely picked in season.

Good local shops provide an abundance of fresh local food and wine and the area is well served for meals out by pizzerias, rosticcerias and agritourismo restaurants. Although little English is spoken, the people of Abruzzo provide visitors with the warmest of welcomes.

Pescara airport is about 40 kilometres away and Rome with its airports is about 3.5 hours drive.
