The southern Charente: The area around La Vaure is characterised by beautiful rolling countryside, punctuated by vineyards that produce Cognac, Pineau des Charentes and red and white wines. The countryside is criss-crossed by charming rivers such as the Charente, and the Dronne which can be explored by hire canoe or kayak. Nearer the coast the landscape changes, becoming much flatter. This is where oysters are farmed in the estuaries of the rivers, and in the oysterbeds that punctuate the picturesque island of Oleron and Ré. The whole area benefits from being between the great weather systems to the north and to the south, a micro climate that gives us sun to rival the Cote d'Azur.
We had 2 wonderful weeks in this glorious spacious peaceful villa. The facilities are first class as is the support and help from the owners who live in a separate house on this large estate. There's lots to do and also plenty of space to have some quite time. The views of the countryside are stunning. Shopping is easy with local villages, markets, and super-markets within a short drive. We'd certainly return for a second visit.
Close to the beautiful towns of St Emilion and Bordeaux, both famous for their wines and both UNESCO World Heritage sites due to their beauty and international importance, and also close to Cognac where you can take tours around the famous makers of this delicious spirit. Not far from the coast, with its extensive beaches, beautiful towns such as La Rochelle, and resorts such as the isles of Oleron and Ré, and within striking distance of regions such as the 'Venice Vert' or the Marais Poitevin where you can hire a punt to spend the day amongst the secluded canals and waterways. Within 20 minutes drive are many Romanesque villages with weekly markets, Aubeterre with its extraordinary underground cathedral, and the beautiful river of the Dronne which you can explore by hiring canoes. There is also horse riding nearby for all ages, and La Vaure is 5 minutes' drive from a swimming lake with a sandy beach and restaurant, a great change for young children.
Other Activities: Safari Park, Jet Ski, Quad bikes
Golf: There are several golf courses nearby, with 18 hole courses at Angouleme and Cognac, both less than an hour away, and 9 holes at Longeveau near Aubeterre, about 20 minutes away.
