About Mathieu Charles Guillory

Originally from the name of the house dedicated to the Spanish Empires last govenero...Baron de President of the Real Audencia in Quito immediately thereafter.

Mathieu Charles Guillory purchased this house in 2007

Why Mathieu Charles Guillory chose Quito

It was the smallest we could find to renovate...5,000 square feet. to Plaza blocks. Bohemian nieghborhood of San Marcos which is reminiscent of Europe.

What makes this house unique

We restored the house intalling modern conveniences but maintaining the old world charm of a typical late Spanish Colonial or early Republican home.

Nice old house, but not so grand

  • 3 of 5

My husband and I booked the house for a 2-week stay. We were excited to stay in such a grand house, just for the experience, but we're soon disappointed. Yes, the house is nicely restored, lovely wood, lots of religious and bullfighting art, nice antiques and sculptures. The kitchen is modern, granite counters, fairly well equipped. It's 3 blocks from the Plaza Grande, where all the action is, so the location is perfect. It's easy to get tours, drinks or a good meal within a 10 minute walk. Our host, Mathieu, was pleasant, helpful and accommodating, for the most part.

That said, there are some downsides. The biggest problem for us was that, although we paid for the whole house, parts of it were locked up, so inaccessible to us. We were relegated to the downstairs bedroom, which was dark and quiet, but quite cramped. We would have liked to have had a choice of bedrooms and some room to spread out. We had to ask for a second bathroom and were given access to that, at least.

The house has very high ceilings so lots of stairs, but broken up so is not as grand as it appears in the photos. The courtyard is open to the elements and main living area. The weather was cold, 11-16 degrees C, and there is no heat source except for a fireplace in the bedroom, where it's needed the least. We were refused a space heater, siting safety reasons. However, if the house is to be rented out in cold weather, there should be some accommodation to make it livable.

Also, the place could have been cleaner. There was quite an accumulation of dust under our bed and the shower could have used a good scrub. Expect stained and ratty bath mats. Had we known, we would have stayed in a smaller, more comfortable house.

A perfect way to “live” the Spanish colonial style in a convenient location.

  • 5 of 5

The house was amazing with plenty of sitting areas and comfortable bedrooms. The location was minutes away from historic center. And an unexpected treat was the opportunity to enjoy dinner at Matthieu’s quaint cafe with such hospitality and warmth (and delicious Ecuadorian food). We thoroughly enjoyed our short stay.

Grand and inspiring house in a terrific location

  • 5 of 5

A gem of a house in old Quito. The open sky courtyard was our favorite place to relax, sipping fresh ground coffee from the owner's farm. Great location, walk out the door and explore up and down the colorful streets. Views from the roof are big and dramatic. Get inspired and fall in love with Quito in this splendidly restored hacienda. We loved it, in fact it took our trip to another level. Matthew is a great host - greeted us with wine and chocolate.

One in a lifetime house

  • 5 of 5

This house is a once in a lifetime, literally!! Taking a step back in time in this classic home, beaming with character and charm. You will never stay in a place like this again. The photos do not do the place justice, its absolutely gorgeous.

Matheiu was a true gentleman. He was punctual and completely helpful, one of the best hosts I ve ever had. I really felt like he went out of his way for us, offering drivers and help to ensure we enjoyed our time in Quito. Go with this house, you will be blown away, fantastic experience. We will be returning

BTW- he has an awesome cafe around the corner that we dined at 4 times, it really great food!!

Thanks again, we really appreciate everything you did

A Little City Time. A Little Farm Time.

  • 4 of 5

We'd recommend using a guide named Juan (translates to English well) that the property owner knows for a walking tour of the city and churches. The churches and culture are pretty amazing. We also used Juan for a trip to property owners farm about two hours outside of Quito, where we got to make coffee and chocolate from start to finish. The farm experience was fantastic, and a trip to the real center of the World is a must.

Amazing stay in Quito!

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week in Quito staying at this incredible property. This was a business/pleasure trip with meetings in the day combined with great food and some fun activities. The house is incredible and the perfect hub for exploring all the churches, restaurants and other sites in Old Town. When you see the door from the outside, you have no idea what awaits you inside, but it is a true oasis. Mathieu has spared no expense remodeling the property while remaining true to its original design. We had 6 people stay there with plenty of room for all of us. If we were coming back to Quito, there is no question that this would be the first space we would look up to see if it was available. Not sure how you could beat the location and charm. And Mathieu was a great host, always ready to give great suggestions of what to do and help however he could. Being at the restaurant around the corner, he was always available if we needed to find him. I have nothing negative to say about our time in Quito and at this house. Highly recommend it!!!!
