Beautiful home in Oslo
We loved our stay at this beautiful big home in Oslo located in a quiet, upscale but accessible neighborhood. Decorated with fascinating art and very well equipped we had everything we needed for our weeklong visit.
I would gladly stay in this home again. It is comfortable, spacious, and so close to the bus! The owner went out of her way to help us settle in. Staying in this home was a major bonus for our trip!
Old World Charm with Great Location
This is a historical home filled with interesting art work and a fireplace resembling those in the Royal Palace. A private garden, a gas grill and a location right on the bus line make this home a great place to stay for your time in Oslo.
However, the "old world charm" also means that there will be a few inconveniences you should expect. As previous reviewers have mentioned, you really cannot take a shower in this home without creating such a flood in the bathroom that it will become not worth it. Sit down and enjoy it and know you are living more simply. Norwegian life is a more simple life, and frankly, as an American, I enjoyed that. There is no microwave in the kitchen, the coffee maker is actually a french press and only two of the stove top burners work. The oven, however, is a confection one and can heat anything quite quickly.
The small markets, one across the street and one down the block, have all you need. The public transportation is unbelievable.
From the airport we took the train to Sentral Station and then a taxi to the house, but this was a mistake. The bus would have gotten us there for a fraction of the price, especially since the taxi driver basically pretended to not know where the house was. I had to tell him 3 times to turn around, as I recognized that he had passed the house. On the return home I took the bus to the express train. The 37 bus runs 24 hours and is a half block away.
We had trouble figuring out how to work the TV but eventually figured it out. The wi-fi was very simple to connect to.
The dryer was more complicated and we had to call the owners son to understand that we had to empty a water tank to make it work. This something Americans are totally unfamiliar with, so need to know. The locks and keys are also old world and need a bit of practice to master, especially the back door which has a handle that falls off in your hand.
Overall, I found this lovely house to be well worth the price, but caution some who expect luxury.
We appriciate your approval of our old house and its charm! The house dates back from 1860 and is quite unic.
For future guests: There are four stove top burners; two electric and two gas and all works perfectly. The locks in the house are normal for Norway and other european countries. The dryer is also normal. As for the inconviniance with the flooding in the bathroom we will make ajustments:)
Beautiful, charming, old house
Very charming house and garden with good location for all kind of activities in Oslo. A lot of space for 2 small families or 1 big family. Groceries right across the street. The only minus is the shower facilities. It was not possible to take a shower without water all over the floor.
We really enjoyed our stay, thanks a lot for this week in the beautiful house at StHanshaugen ☺
Lovely, spacious, wonderfully located home!!!
We had a very enjoyable 10 day stay at this lovely home in Oslo. It is not a "town house" as we think of town homes in the US. It is a private, older, large, single family home in a lovely super convenient part of town, with gorgeous back yard too! It is a 3 minute walk to the bus that takes you in 10 min to the center. Easy to and from the airport from this home as well. We took the 4:33 AM bus to catch the airport express train, no problem .
Unni, the owner was consistently great with her communications. The home was very clean and beautifully decorated. The kitchen is fully stocked with gorgeous dishware and serving pieces, definitely a home of a good cook! ( microwave was unfortunately stashed in the basement) Nice to have washer and dryer in basement as well (although my girls found it too creepy to go down there, so I was stuck with laundry duty ). There are a couple of quirks with the house the we got used to- one of the bedrooms is attached to the only full bathroom. (There is a pretty half bath on main floor). You will need to pass through the bathroom to get to the bedroom. It was a bit of an inconvenience with teen, privacy loving girls. Also a water proof shower curtain is definitely needed, unless you'll be taking baths, While it might not look quite as pretty as the current sheer curtain- it will enable guests to take a shower without flooding the floor and avoid dangerous slipping.
Great wifi and lots of channels on the television.
Unni has made it a really cozy home, a nice place to come home to after tromping around all day. We would definitely recommend it.
Month in Oslo
I recently stayed here and found my stay comfortable and convenient. The home has all that is needed and is located in a nice area with easy access to public transport. Unni is very welcomimg and helpful. My family visited and i was able to entertain with meals for relatives.
It was a real relaxing experience and my family is thankful for the opportunity provided by Unni and Trond.
During winter there is only a short trip to an eldorado for cross country-snow board or down hill skiers. During summer you can just hang out in the popular park, nearby shopping and dining aera or walk to the city centre in 15 minutes. From here you can take a short ferry trip to the Viking Ships Museum, the Folk Museum and the Kon Tiki Museum at Bygdøy. Or go swimming at Bygdøy’s popular beach Huk. Or you could go out to one of the islands for swimming or sightseeing. Many museums (Edvard Munch, Gustav Vigeland Park & Museum etc) and the beautiful new Opera is in the centre. Oslo has quite a hectic nightlife with bars, music clubs and restaurants to cater for any taste. And during the summer there is only a few hours of darkness. Temperatures in summer vary between 16 to 25 but can reach 30 degrees centigrades. During winter temperatures vary between minus 1 to minus 15 centigrades.
