Lovely stay June 2017
This is a lovely spacious villa in the pretty village of Porta da Cruz. It is very well looked after by the housekeeper who is very attentive during the stay and deals with any questions or minor issues. The bedrooms are all en-suite and there is even an outdoor hot and cold shower for after your dip in the pool. We ate our meals mostly on the upstairs patio which is suitably furnished with tables and chairs, overlooking the pool with its loungers and umbrellas. Banana and papaya trees and vines grow in the garden. The kitchen is quite small but adequately equipped. Unfortunately the TV receives no British channels but internet access is good.
The village has a small shop and 5 restaurants (Pippa's is the best) and the supermarket in Santana in only a short drive away. This area is very good for accessing beautiful walks.
Hope to return in future. Would highly recommend.
Thank you very much for your words! We are so glad you enjoyed your stay! Regarding the TV, the Villa Ricardo has satellite television, so we could easily have changed the satellite, to one that had more British channels. If you had said before, we would have made this change during your stay! Still, I am sure that on an island like Madeira, with so much nature, beauty and sensations to enjoy, the television goes into the background. :) Hope to see you soon again!
Absolutely wonderful. Highly recommended!!
We enjoyed our stay at the Villa Ricardo very much. The villa was extremely clean when we arrived with plenty of towels and linen. It was very comfortable, with everything we required; the Christmas decorations were a thoughtful touch.
It was a pleasure to meet Senhor Ricardo on our arrival; Rubina is a delightful woman who was most helpful with anything we needed.
Porto da Cruz is an attractive little town; we particularly enjoyed several evening meals in the Pipa restaurant.
Overall we want definitely recommend the villa to others who wish a dream vacation!
Dear Mrs. Anne,
Thank you very much for your words! At Christmas, we always decorate the house with a Christmas decoration, so that our guests can live this beautiful and familiar time, in the best way! We hope to see you again in the future, at Villa Ricardo!
Villa absolutely fabulous and very well cared.
The villa was absolutely fabulous and very well cared for; spotlessly clean throughout. The Villa owner and Mrs Rubina, the caretaker, could not have been more helpful and welcoming. We loved Porto da Cruz as a location. Their contact with us prior to arrival was excellent.
This was our first visit to Madeira and we thought the island beautiful. Although we didn't have the best weather, this didn't stop us getting around and seeing places.
We would happily recommend the Villa Ricardo, and its fabulous heated pool with wonderful views, for all those who wish to relax in nature, in full contact with sea and mountain!
Thank you so much for your words! We are very happy that you enjoyed Villa Ricardo, and the village of Porto da Cruz! We hope to see you again soon! Best Regards, Ricardo Ramos
Villa Ricardo exceeded our expectations!
Villa Ricardo exceeded our expectations. The house is fantastic, very welcoming and very well maintained. The garden, the fruits, the flowers, the fantastic heated pool ... all together made us feel in paradise! Mrs. Rubina is a delightful person who helped us to make our vacation perfect! We strongly recommend Villa Ricardo, and certainly we will return!
Our stay at Villa Ricardo
We loved our week in Madeira. Mrs Rubina was waiting to welcome us from the airport and gave us a tour of the villa and lots of interesting information about the island and the festival that was taking place that weekend.
The villa was very clean and had everything we needed. The views are spectacular and we appreciated the fact that we could walk to the village for a meal and sit and watch the waves.
Mrs Rubina takes great pride in the villa and changed bed linen and towels twice during our stay. The pool was heated and the internet good. We enjoyed relaxing at the terrace around the pool and cooling off in the water.
It was easy to explore the island from this location and nice to be somewhere not as busy and touristy as other places. All communication before the holiday was good and any questions answered promptly.
The road noise didn't bother us but we found the beds quite uncomfortable and creaky, especially the double bed, hence four stars not five.
However, the views are stunning and service excellent.
Thank you for the beautiful words regarding Villa Ricardo!
I am sure that we did everything to make your holiday a wonderful time!
Regarding the beds, I inform you that every year the mattresses are changed, and the last time was in March (about 6 months). There is no reason to be uncomfortable! We will, however, check that situation!
We love to meet you, and wait for you again in Villa Ricardo, in the future!
Very nice. Maison charmante et très agréable

PORTO DA CRUZ VILLAGE
Porto da Cruz is one of the parishes belonging to the Machico council. Its name came from a cross (Cruz) that was placed by the explorers on the bay once used as port (Porto). The attractions of this small parish are hidden and youll have to take a closer look to find them. One of them is the old sugar cane factory, which is still operating, as it was when it started with the sugar production in 1927. It boasts a 26 meter tall tower and when its working you might even see steam coming out!
Not to be missed is also the place known as Penha dÁguia, an imposing rock that separates Porto da Cruz from Faial. Getting up there might be a challenge, as the road is very steep, but the songs of the birds will help you on the way up and once you get there youll be sure it was definitely worth
Porto da Cruz is also famous for its wine. Known as vinho seco americano (dry red wine made of a type of grape called americana), this local product is the theme for a celebration usually happening in September (Festa do Vinho). In Porto da Cruz there are another two wonderful religious celebrations, with great beauty. The first occurs on days 15 and 16 of August, and the second, at the following weekend (Saturday and Sunday). They are celebrations that visitors should not miss!!!
The Porto the Cruz village is on the northeast coast of Madeira and from there you can quickly get to the Airport (12 minutes by car), to the nearest golf course in Santo da Serra (15 minutes by car) and to the neighbouring cities and villages like Machico, Santo da Serra, Santana and Faial, amongst other interesting places you can easily visit.
The Porto da Cruz village has, mini markets, restaurants equipped with several different kitchens, bars, transport services, health services, able to provide to the visitor, the satisfaction of emerging daily needs.
The weather in Madeira Island is generally quite stable and mild throughout the year.
Porto da Cruz has in its extensive and cut coast, two natural beaches of black sand, and a public swimming pool of salt water. The water temperature (22 centigrade) is surprisingly enjoyable in the summer.
MADEIRA´S CAPITAL , FUNCHAL.
Madeira's capital, Funchal, is an enchanting town set on a glittering bay against a background of soaring green mountains. Winding cobbled streets meander between elegant colonial-style buildings, nestling into the shelter of the verdant hillside. Funchals historic core overlooks the harbour and features some fine government buildings and stately 18th-century mansions. Its deep natural harbour attracted early settlers in the 15th century.
What to see. The simple whitewashed Sé Cathedral was built between 1486 and 1514. Inside, its main features are the magnificent mudejar ceiling of Madeira cedar wood and the voluptuous Baroque carving of the golden Sacramento chapel to the right of the main altar. Now a museum, the Quinta das Cruzes on Calçada do Pico is the house where the islands discoverer, João Gonçalves Zarco, once lived. Next door is the pretty 16th century church of Santa Clara where he lies buried. The Old Blandy Wine Lodge occupies part of a former Franciscan friary dating back to the 17th century. Guided visits include a tour of the cellars and a wine-tasting session.
Nearby. Opened to the public in 1960, the Botanical Gardens on the edge of town display plants from all over the world, including desert cacti, rainforest orchids and South African proteas. The famous toboggan ride from Monte to Funchal is an exhilarating experience and takes approximately 20 minutes. Madeiran tobogganing was invented as a form of passenger transport around 1850. Much frequented by Sir Winston Churchill in the 1950s, the pretty fishing village of Câmara de Lobos to the west of Funchal offers spectacular views of the worlds second-highest sea cliff, Cabo Girão (589 m). Also within easy reach of Funchal is the deep valley location of Curral das Freiras (Nuns Refuge) near the centre of the island.
