Why Jason or Lyndsey chose Conteville

As soon as we visited Honfleur in 2004, we thought it was stunning and bought a holiday cottage in the region within 6 months of our first visit. When we had children, we needed a property that was larger and more child friendly, yet still retained rustic charm and a rural setting. That is why we loved this house. The garden is large, safe and accessible for children to play in. The house layout is also great for when we visit as an extended family.

What makes this house unique

Compared to our first cottage, this house is spacious and light and perfect for a growing family. We also loved that we could walk to the local bakers and mini-mart.

Lovely, large house in a stunning, location - very French/Normandy

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for a long weekend. Lovely traditional French house in a gorgeous hamlet (thatch cottages, wooden beams etc...). Beautiful views over open countryside - apple trees in blossom, cows and chickens roaming in the farmers field next door and only 2 houses away from a traditional cider farm - it doesn’t get more ‘Normandy’ than that:). BBQ’d a couple of times at the house and ventured into Honfleur for lunch 1 day and supper another - the sun was out and it was stunning - spoilt for food choices, cafe’s and galleries. We even had a couple of hours on Honfleurs beach too.

DVD player didn’t work in the house, but reported that to the owner who said will replace this week.

Really lovely break with 3 generations of our family. Thanks!

Overall we found the property comfortable and reasonably priced for our stay

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay over New Year and the property worked well for our group, which was made up of 3 families including 6 adults and 7 children aged 11-17. In general we didn't feel cramped in the house, although the dining table only sat 10 comfortably so the adults ate separately to the children, and two of the children had to top and tail in a double bed (neither was an issue for us, but do check the bedroom layout to avoid a surprise on arrival as there are a lot of doubles). The property was comfortable and warm (especially as outside was around -5C most of the time), there was an adequate supply of logs for the open fire, and the children really enjoyed the games room. There were a few maintenance issues which were unsurprising mid winter, but nothing that couldn't be resolved with a quick call to the owner.

Not quite delightful

  • 3 of 5

I'd go along with half of the strapline. Hameau Pottier is large and privately situated but, unless you have a private jet, you're not going to reach Honfleur in ten minutes and, as for delightful: not quite. The house is undeniably handsome from the outside and comfortable enough on the inside but Hameau Pottier cries out for a little attention. The lounge, for example, large as it is, contains two highchairs but not a single lamp. A couple of standard lamps are a must! Small things, like chalk for the pool room, and the provision of an extra key, need to be attended to. The TV didn't work at all when we stayed. How about a radio in the kitchen? And how about WiFi? Not a necessity, perhaps, but it would be a welcome addition for many guests and it would beat directing them to McDonalds in Honfleur. And paying extra for linen is one thing - but we've never been told to strip our beds in any of the many places we've stayed in over the years! Customer service was similarly wanting. I messaged twice after our stay before getting a reply and am yet to receive confirmation that the damage deposit will be returned, although the owner did kindly tell me not to worry about the wine glass we broke. A courteous 'We hope you enjoyed your stay...' would have been appreciated, following our visit. It is these touches that cause people to recommend places to others.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for your feedback - we really do appreciate you taking the time do this. We're glad you enjoyed your stay and value your thoughts.....the large lounge now has 3 lamps. We have added extra chalk and spare balls for the table football in the games room (we did have spares in the kitchen drawer). We found the TV to be working after your stay, and as it was 5 years old we have replaced it with a brand new, large, widescreen smart TV which is internet enabled. You'll also be pleased to know the house now has Wifi. With regard to linen, we like to offer our guests the option of bringing their own linen and many guests choose to do this, but we also do provide linen. As we have a check out time of 10.00 in the morning and arrival time 16.00 hours, and many guests leave a little late and many are keen to access the house a littler earlier, the changeover time can often be as little as 5 hours - it's a very large house, and takes a good 4.5 hours to clean and with 9 beds - if they have been quickly stripped by guests before departure it means we can get the house ready earlier for incoming guests. In terms of the customer service - your comments do feel rather unfair. In 12 years of renting our house in France to guests, we had more communications with your party than any others. As you started your booking through a 3rd party but then changed to a direct booking part way through, we did not have all of your contact details which made it difficult to communicate with you - we did try to confirm your email/contact details several times but with no response. We wrote to you several times with information, such as directions, booking forms... and followed up to see if you had received and eventually received confirmation that they had been received. On arrival day we received numerous texts from many of the party requesting directions which we responded to...we tried very, very hard to help your party as we would with any other. In terms of your damage deposit - this feels unfair. We had not cashed your cheque, and didn't cash it. We have to wait for our housekeepers report on the house condition before we can do this, which doesn't always, but can take 2-3 weeks. Following your stay there was a glass and 2 sun loungers broken - none of which were deducted from your deposit. When your party chased your deposit after 2 weeks, we confirmed within hours that your cheque had been destroyed. Many thanks for your feedback,

Very good house and garden - highly recommended

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our holiday at this house.

The place was very well equipped and was ideal for a family holiday with children as the garden was big enough for the kids to run around.

Large rooms and good layout with excellent facilities. Clean and well maintained.

Thoroughly recommended for those who want a quiet rural retreat that is not too far out of town.

Honfleur is a charming harbour town, with plenty of restaurants, shops, cafés and art galleries. Honfleur has an interesting Maritime museum and an impressive array of architecture. The public gardens, with outside swimming pool are also very pretty.

Conteville is a lovely little village on the outskirts of Honfleur. It has a small selection of shops, including bakers, butchers, mini-supermarket, hairdresser and post office. There is also a creperie, tabac and a Michelin star restaurant for those evenings when you want to stroll out rather than drive.

Just down the coast from Honfleur is the famous duet of towns Trouville and Deauville with their designer shops, casinos, sandy beach, restaurants, race course and variety of golf courses.

In and around Honfleur you will find many public tennis courts, horse riding stables, sea fishing and water sports. Calvados has beautifully lush green countryside and sandy coastline. The D-Day beaches are also a short drive away from the house.
