The local area is steeped in history, with many sites and attractions within a short distance from the house. From the UNESCO listed caves containing early man’s cave paintings, Gallo-Roman ruins, fortified medieval towns and villages and over a thousand castles and chateau. Also within driving distance are the famed vineyards of Bordeaux, such as Saint Emillion, and the closer vineyards of the Bergerac region. The area has beautiful cliffs, fields and valleys that run all the way along the Dordogne River.

The River Dordogne is only 1000 meters from the house and is great for fishing, canoeing, cruising or even swimming in the summer months.

Saint Cyprian is only 2 Klm away with restaurants, bars, shops, and a large supermarket that sells everything from wine, cheeses, meats and seafood, to DVD’s and clothing. The town has a beautiful Augustinian Monastery initially built in 1076 in the centre of the town that is a focal point to the area due to its size and being raised half way up a hill. The town has many medieval winding side streets and is a wonderful base to explore the Dordogne region. There are two tennis courts that can be hired. A great Sunday market that is open in the morning where you can stock up on local provisions.

Berbigeuires is dominated by a Chateau initially built in 12th century. The village is only 1 kilometre from the house and is an easy walk or bike ride. The village is situated in a dale between two wooded hills and has many hiking trails around the area.

Chateau Des Milandes is only 8 Klm and was built in the 15th Century by the owner of Castle Castelnaud. The chateau was abandoned during the French revolution but was restored by the famous Music Hall star Josephine Baker in the 1930’s. It is a lovely building that can be visited and houses a museum to Baker and is maintained in the way she furnished it in the 1930’s.

Beynac is only 12 Klms and is a stunning village situated on the banks of the River Dordogne. It has a castle at the top of a cliff that dominates the whole area. There are winding streets that lead up to the castle which when reached offers excellent views along the Dordogne valley. There is a great restaurant right on the river and plenty of bars and cafes. Canoes can be hired nearby on the river as well as cruises. The castle can be visited and the film Joan of Arc and Chocolate were filmed in the village and castle. It really is one of the most beautiful and enchanting villages anywhere in the world and almost looks like a set from some Disneyland Movie.

Les Eyzies is only 14 Klm and is situated in the UNESCO Listed Vezere Valley and has many caves with prehistoric drawings and other evidence of early man dating back 40,000 years. This is the area where Cro Magnon Man was discovered and the town has the National Prehistory Museum situated built into a hillside.

There are some lovely cafes and restaurants overlooking the river and the area has many caves that can be visited.

Les Jardins de Marqueyssac is only 14 Klm and are set high on a hill overlooking the Dordogne valley with views covering Beynac, Castelnaud and many other chateau’s in the area. The gardens are quite remarkable with clipped boxed hedges that weave in and out and lovely walkways on the edge of the surrounding cliffs. There are apparently over 150,000 clipped boxed trees and hedges in the garden that is spread over the entire hilltop.

There is a great cafe and terrace that serves excellent salads and sweet treats where you can sit, eat, drink and be in awe of the view.

Castelnaud Castle is only 16 Klm and is situated high above the rivers Dordogne and Ceou not far from Baynac. The castle has excellent views around the countryside and to Baynac Castle. The castle was built in the 12th Century and houses a great entertaining museum and huge catapults on its ramparts.

La Roque Gageac is 17 Klms and one of France's most beautiful villages. It is positioned on the north bank of the Dordogne River, and backed by cliffs, and is one of those picture postcard villages. You can take a boat ride on one of the replica ‘Gabares’, the old typical local river boat from here to explore the river Dordogne or hire canoes locally and paddle along the river and explore the area yourself. There are restaurants and bars and the village is a lovely place to spend the afternoon having a cool drink by the river.

Belves is 20 Klm and a typical Bastide town that sits high on a hill with many medieval houses and has a 15th century covered market hall. The town is famous for being the town of seven bell towers. There is a 14th century castle and town walls and is on the ‘most beautiful villages in France’ list. Many parts of the town date from the 11th and 12th century and some of the fortified town ramparts are still visible. Market day in Belves is Saturday morning and during July and August there is an evening market on Wednesday nights where tables are laid out around the central hall. You can select what you will eat from the surrounding stalls. There are a couple of great restaurants in town that offer great service, excellent cheap three course meals and have a very good wine list.

Domme is 21 Klm and still has some of its fortified walls and main entrances to the town in place. The towers of the main entrance known as the Porte Des Tours were converted to a prison when the Knights Templers in France were arrested on orders of the King in 1307. It is still possible to see engraved graffiti such as crucifixes and other marks carved by the Knights as they were held awaiting trial.

Sarlat is 22 Klm and the main town in the local area and one of the most visited in France. The town should not be missed. The old part of the town, dating from both the medieval and renaissance periods has been well restored. Sarlat has the highest density of Historic Monuments and Classified Monuments of any town in the whole of France.

Bergerac is only 52. It is a very scenic drive to Bergerac alongside rivers and canals. There area produces excellent cheap wine

Rocamadour is 70 Klm

Saint Emilion is only 72 Klm

Bordeaux is only 180 Klm

About Robert Lancaster

Managing Director of Lancasters Global Risk and property investor.

Robert Lancaster purchased this house in 2011

Why Robert Lancaster chose Berbiguières

The Dordogne is one of the most beautiful places in the world, rich in history, full of castles and chateau, vinyards and wonderful villages. As soon as I went there I knew I had to buy something. The house was orginally a bit of an ugly duckling, but after some serious renovations, my own little 'Grand Designs' the place is now as beautiful as the area it is situated in

What makes this house unique

When I saw the house I knew it had potential. The location was ideal. A lot of hard work and some interior reworking, plus the guideance of a great Interior Designer has transformed the house to a home away from home.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had a great family holiday at your lovely home in France, it was a pleasure for us to be all together in one property and to watch our 5 grandchildren ages 11, 9, 6, 3 and 2 interacting. Thank you for the opportunity to stay in such a beautiful home in a fantastic area.

Best Wishes

Perfect family holiday

  • 5 of 5

Maison de Lancaster was THE perfect place for a family holiday! The home was so tastefully appointed and really made use of the dining areas both inside and out. I hosted a Fourth of July family reunion for my family from America. After days enjoying the area and seeing caves, kayaking the Dordogne and trying to decide which is the most picturesque Dordogne village, we made use of the refreshing pool and sauna! Highly recommend this wonderful property!

A once beautiful holiday home now badly in need of maintenance

  • 2 of 5

Specific details about our disappointment will be shared directly with the owner;

In summary however, there is much to be done to this home in my opinion to justify the price tag assigned for our 2 week holiday.

Positives.: home is perfectly located for a wealth of beautiful sights, visits and places to generally relax. The house itself has ample room for the guests with plenty of essential items to ensure a home away from home. The maintenance man was very welcoming and honest about the state of repair of some of the house's features.

Negatives: significant concerns about the swimming pool which turns a myriad of colours, except transparent, and is missing tiles and notable amounts of mortar from around the poolside walkways! Sinks which don't drain, a broken shower, water damaged flooring, ripped terrace awning, missing shade from the poolside relax chair and numerous light bulbs which did not work

I'm in no doubt that when newly refurbished this was a beautiful home which warranted its price tag; sadly our holiday here has been an expensive disappointment. I can only suggest that the owners visit this property as a matter of urgency to address the home/ pool maintenance and pool hygiene issues. Until this happens I suspect that more people will spend their very hard earned money on a family holiday which falls desperately short of the mark.

Owner's Response: Dear Louise, Thank you for your comments. I was very surprised that you did not contact me at any time with your concerns about any of the issues raised during the whole time you stayed at my property and waited until your departure to inform me of your concerns. My contact details with the words "in the event you are unhappy with any aspect of Maison de Lancaster please contact me straight away, Robert Lancaster" with both my email and telephone number. As this is next to the wifi code it can not be missed. I Highlight I personally attend my property in April/May and ensure the property is in an excellent condition prior to the rental season commencing. After your email after your departure I did indeed attend my property to review and address those issues you raised as my property manager did not appraise me of any issues during your stay. The sun daybed cover and awning was ripped by a previous guest just prior to your stay. I have provided the current guests with a large angled umbrella while I await the repair of the sunbed cover. I would have purchased the same for you if you had requested this. The tiles on the pool and light bulbs that were out were replaced which only took several minutes to arrange. My property manager should have arranged this straight away as it is part of his checklist to check all lights are working and any maintenance issues are rectified straight away. I have not been notified of any issue of the sinks or "broken" shower by either my property manager or current guests. As I am now only just informed of this by your review I will assess and see what if any the issue is. The Pool. The filtration system sand was apparently replaced just prior to your stay and I was billed for this. I arranged another Pool company to attend and was informed that the filtration sand had not been replaced and the work charged for had not been carried out. My property manager assured me the filtration system had been checked and sand replaced which was the cause of the lack of clarity of the water. I believe this issue has now been addressed. To end it is of great concern to hear of these issues which I believe are now rectified. You would be aware I have now provided you with a partial refund of your rental and am sorry to hear your stay did not meet your expectations.

Great villa. Superbly positioned to visit areas throughout the Dordogne. Lovely interior. Good amenities. We had five adults and two children staying and it was very comfortable and spacious. Owners were great to deal with and fair. All in all, a super choice and we'd recommend to anyone.

A great house for a family holiday

  • 4 of 5

Maison de Lancaster is a delightful house ideally suited for a family

holiday. Well situated about 5 minutes from Saint Cyprien with good

restaurants, a large Carrefour supermarket and many other services.

We were 10 in number, 7 adults and 3 children who could each have

their own space in this well-equipped property.

Our week at the end of May was unfortunately uncharacteristically

very wet but that did not deter the family getting out and about to

visit the many attractions within about 30 minutes from the house.

Swimming in the rain in the super swimming pool followed by )me in

the roomy sauna was very popular. The family table tennis

competitions were great fun.

We had a great. Thank you Robert and Lianne. Your flexibility

on arrival and departure )mes was greatly appreciated
