About Carole Heiman Kezios

Wow, who would have thought when I told my husband I wanted to buy a little pied-a-terre in his hometown, Athens, Greece, that I'd end up with the greatest accidental career of my life? Born and raised in Chicago, my love for travel was evident early on. Perhaps it was my arrival in the world, early one December morning, way quicker than my siblings had, in fact so quick we were still enroute to the hospital, and I still hold the title of youngest patient ever admitted to that north suburban hospital! (And thus, as a Sagittarius, characteristically smitten with wunderlust). I traveled my home country extensively with my family as a child, and was fortunate to have parents who encouraged us to study a second language young - while my language of choice as a child was French, my culture of choice was Greek - My earliest jobs were always in Chicago's Greek diners, my university days filled with hours playing backgammon in the cafeteria with my Greek friends, and my Eurail passes always started and ended my European backpacking holidays in Greece. So no one was surprised when I met Basil, a romantic writer but practicing translator and linguist, born and bred in Athens, but transplanted to Chicago, fell in love, and married him. While our life in Chicago was full, rehabbing a warehouse we purchased for house ourselves, our son and our growing Greek translation agency, I longed to plant some roots for our family in Basil's hometown. A small studio overlooking Mount Lykavittos was to be our Athens crash pad, but thanks to what seemed then an unfortunate turn of events, our home in Athens ended up being the beautiful Athens First Luxury Duplex. Larger than we had planned, offering it as a short term furnished rental seemed the logical way to afford it. Little did we realize that it would become so popular we'd be sleeping on friend's couches rather than in our own Athens home!

Why Carole Heiman Kezios chose Old Town

Twelve years passed as our accidental Greek Vacation Rentals business grew, our son moved on to a life of his own, and our rehabbed factory dream home was suddenly too large for just the two of us. We have been lovingly de-converting our original living space into 4 apartments, 3 fabulous vacation rental lofts and a one bedroom for ourselves.

What makes this condo unique

These fabulous homes are located in what is now considered "ground zero" for everything Chicago. We are at the crossroads of 4 great neighborhoods: Lincoln Park, Old North, River North & River West and an easy walk or short drive to Wicker Park, Bucktown, DePaul and Wrigleyville. We are surrounded by great restaurants, bars & cafes, have two flagship supermarkets, Whole Foods & Marianos, and great live theater like Steppenwolf, the Royal George & IO Theater as well as the brand new Arclight Theaters & Kings Bowl. We are a shopping mecca, whether you love browsing home furnishings & accessories, clothes, shoes or outdoor gear, we have something for everyone - so much so that our area is now known as "Little Michigan Avenue" to the locals. And finally, our apartments: Our years in the vacation rental world and as travelers have taught us that while it is great to be able to sleep a larger group (6, 8, 10 or even 12 guests), it's also important that there be a comfortable space for everyone to relax together. Each of our homes features a large open living room area with seating for as many guests the property sleeps, and our dining room tables will always accommodate the same number - so meals can be enjoyed together.

Spacious, well-appointed and phenomenal location.

  • 5 of 5

This is a wonderful rental for a bigger group. We had four separate families and it was nice for each family to have private space, including a bath. Common areas were spacious enough when we wanted to be together. Quick and easy access to public transportation and we never had a problem with street parking. We felt very safe walking in the neighborhood and there was lots to do. We were especially thankful for the elevator!

ABSOLUTELY PERFECT!

  • 5 of 5

The loft home was even better than we expected! It very comfortably slept 12 girls for a bachelorette weekend with 3 spacious bathrooms. My communication with Carole and Basil prior to our arrival was great. They were always quick to respond and provided a ton of helpful recommendations for transportation, restaurants, sightseeing, anything we could think of for our weekend in Chicago. The keyless entry system made it easy to coordinate with a big group and the location was great...close to public transportation, Whole Foods, restaurants, and breweries. I use to live in Chicago and I would highly recommend Magic Factory Lofts for any group or family events in the city. The home was clean, big kitchen, comfortable beds, and had everything we could possibly need. Carole and Basil even welcomed us with a large complimentary bottle of local beer and delicious homemade baklava. This is a MUST stay!

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for your review! Basil and I are so happy you and your friends enjoyed your stay, and that you liked the baklava :-) We look forward to welcoming you back and hope we'll connect at some point in Greece, too!

Great apartment in Chicago!

  • 5 of 5

This was my first trip to Chicago and I was truly uncertain of where to stay. Hopefully I decide to book this apartment for my entire stay. Location is just magnificent. In walking distance are some of the greatest places of the city such a Whole foods store, great cafe for breakfast too. It is a central location without the hectic and busy feeling.

The apartment is magnificent. Truly beautiful decorated with the Chicago brick walls, lovely spacious living room with unforgettable views to Chicago skyline, even a balcony. Kitchen perfect designed with everything you need to cook on your own. Best of all the beds. Super comfy. Have my back problems and usually I’m very worried for the quality of the mattresses. This bed was heavenly comfortable for my back problems. At the end I could not Thank enough the perfect hosts of this apartment. Not only they welcome us greatly but thank to them we experience the best places to see, eat and have drinks in the city of Chicago.

Worth the money spend and it would be my first choice again and again on my trip back.

Great stay

  • 5 of 5

From start to finish, this experience was great. Good communication with owners, helpful check in process and the actual space is great! Setup for a group, feels brand new, clean and lots of bathrooms. The pictures actually don't do it justice. Highly recommend!

I was very impressed with the property and loved our stay!

  • 5 of 5

Carole and Basil were very friendly and accommodating our entire stay! The bedrooms had plenty of beds for all 14 of us and there was a shower in each room. The place was clean and set up with wifi, music, and a tv which was a great for a large group of people. I would recommend this place to anyone with a large group looking for a great place to stay in Chicago! If I ever will be in Chicago again with a large group, this is the place I am staying at.

Location

Car: not necessary

The neighborhood is great: Vibrant and alive, with plenty to do, to eat, to drink & to be entertained by: Plus, everything you need is right here: We've got the second largest Whole Foods market around the corner with it's fabulous food court (5 dining options) and tables along the riverfront, a great neighborhood pub & wine bar, as well as Marino's Market and a Super Target for shopping.

When your stomach growls food options abound from great casual places like SoNo Woodfired, Burger Bar, Uncle Julio's, Dinosaur BBQ, Nando's PeriPeri, Earl's, Yard House, Lyfe Kitchen as well as Mouse Trap / Off Color Brewery's taproom along with Goose Island Brewery if you'd like to sample a local Chicago beer. There's also a several great live theater venues up the street including Steppenwolf and the Royal George as well as comedy & improv stages at the I/O Theater. The Mag Mile, Millennium Park, Chicago's amazing lakefront and Navy Pier, as well as the city's finest museums are all just minutes away - but you're still in a funky friendly neighborhood with great little local shops & cafes as opposed to being in the high rise heartland. Sports fans will love our proximity to Wrigley Field (3 stops on the train) and Soldier's Field and the United Center are minutes by car or cab.

Our proximity to everything and the great public transportation nearby means you don't need a car, but if you are bringing one there is plenty of safe, free parking on our street, and we have an an off street parking space you can add to your reservation (fee).
