We did have a wonderful anniversary and a nice weekend. Our dogs loved the yard. We will be sure to recommend the Alto Guest house for anyone exploring the Shawnee wine trail and Southern Illinois. Thanks again!
Vacation is always better when we can bring our dogs :) The whole process of renting from Lee was smooth and easy. While this house is not considered luxury, it was exactly as pictured and suited our needs very well. The hiking trails and wineries are a close drive away. One of our favorite stops was Abbey Ridge. They have good brews and food and lots of space for dog frisbee. Hedmon winery had a delicious Norton and an added meat, cheese n olive plate for $2. Nice quick getaway for us. Lee responded immediately to our questions and as the other reviewers noted, the local eggs, bacon, milk, pastries and fruit were a delicious bonus. Thanks Lee!
My BFF and I enjoyed a week's stay at this quaint, quirky cabin. It was close to many of the wineries and great restaurants yet secluded enough for us to enjoy the birds and quiet countryside. Host Lee left us all the makings for a great country breakfast on our first day so we could enjoy a leisurely morning before taking in the local sites. Clean, basic accommodations at a reasonable price, and our 2 dogs had a great time in the fenced back yard! Hope to make another visit next year!
Excellent location to wineries. Nice fenced in yard for our dog with a nice fire pit. Can't wait to come back again for a longer stay.
The house was quaint & perfect for our weekend get-a-way! We loved the location, quiet, peaceful, and restful. The house was clean and well stocked with towels & kitchen items. We loved the breakfast food that Lee left for us in the fridge. The owner was great at communicating prior to our arrival & was very accommodating. Loved that we could bring the dogs on the trip!!! We cannot wait to go back!
Lee goes above and beyond to make your stay enjoyable. We had bacon, eggs, milk, fruit, and pastries waiting for us in the fridge when we arrived. The house is extremely clean. Big fenced backyard which was great for our dog. Hot tub at night is very relaxing. Visited 9 of the local wineries in two days which was awesome. My wife and I love Shawnee area and always choose this place when we visit. You won't regret it!
Stayed here during the last week of March 2014 to do some early spring hiking in Shawnee National Forest – 2 adults, 2 teenage girls, and a dog. The house was conveniently located near the state parks and also the wineries. Everything was clean and tidy when we got there, and a fresh breakfast fixings package in the fridge was a wonderful and much appreciated bonus. Lee, the owner, stopped by the first morning to make sure we had everything we needed, including advice and information on the area. We travel everywhere with our dog, so finding dog-friendly vacation rental homes can be a challenge. This house has a fenced-in yard that our small/medium-sized dog could not escape from, plus the large deck has gates so we could enclose her up there if needed. The girls enjoyed having a room on the other side of the house from the master bedroom, each with their own bed. The master bedroom has sliding doors which also open out to the deck for a great morning view. The hot tub was clean and working well and there were plenty of towels available. The kitchen was completely stocked with everything we needed and the appliances were clean. The owner did a nice job taking an old small house and updating and adding to it to make it a modern, and charming, quirky cottage. No internet, but our Verizon cell phones worked fine. The weather was chilly this year, and the late March hiking trails at Giant City and other parks were extremely wet and muddy, but the waterfalls were flowing heavily, it was uncrowded, and the streams were a fun challenge to cross – plus there were no bugs or ticks out yet!
Bird Watching - great songbird migration season in May! Mushroom Festival - hunt for morel mushrooms! River to River Relay Race in April - 70 mile relay race.
