Rural calm for two between Chablis and Beaune, Burgundy

Bedrooms 1
Space 699 sq. ft.
Property type barn
Minimum Stay 2 - 5 nights

About the property

Single-level gîte for 2 people with own garden, 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom

Lying on the edge of a quiet village in a rural river valley given over to small-scale, hedged livestock & arable farms dotted with woodland & the occasional vineyard, this property has its own walled garden. Converted in 2011, the “Little Barn” is a cosy, modern & comfortable, single-storey holiday rental suitable for two people. It has a professionally-fitted, fully equipped kitchen, one double bedroom & a bathroom with spacious modern shower. There are no steps into or inside the building; its design is open plan, with a large living area & plenty of light being provided by large south-facing windows & French doors leading onto the garden. The “Little Barn” can accommodate people of moderately-reduced mobility - it is not officially approved for disabled users and help would be needed when accessing the shower cubicle.

Dogs are welcome, provided they do not get up onto the bed or the furniture! Gated parking off the road.

The owners are usually on site and will help or give advice, but will otherwise leave you in peace!

Excellent barn gite and perfect rural location

  • 5 of 5

Stunning, spacious barn gite spotlessly clean and very well equipped - photographs do not do it justice.

Delightful private garden, including off road parking.

Stunning village location with plenty of beautiful towns to visit and lovely canal walks.

Stuart and Jules perfect hosts; extremely helpful and prompt with all booking correspondence. Great to meet, whilst being discreet, but also very willing to help and great to talk to.

Perfect holiday: so much so, we definitely hope to return!

Highly recommend the Little Barn at Viserny.

Cal and Paul

"A little gem in the countryside."

  • 5 of 5

As a couple travelling from Australia this place appealed to us because it was in a village setting and quiet.First of all you would need a car here as there are no shops in the village. If you have bikes it is the perfect place to ride the countryside.

Stuart and Jules were just lovely, helpful in every way but left us to ourselves.

The little barn was beautiful, the beds comfortable, lots of living space, the best equipped kitchen i have ever seen in a holiday home.

In the evenings we enjoyed cooking and sitting in our own private walled garden.

From here we enjoyed day trips to many interesting towns. To name a few we visited Auxerre,Tonnerre, Semur-en Auxois and many lovely villages Epoisses and the beautiful city of Beaune.

There are three different canal bike paths within this region. We rode each of them and bike hire was at main tourist offices in Montbard and Pouilly-en-Auxois etc.

We can highly recommend this place to stay .It is THE best gite we have ever stayed in.

Outstanding Gite

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for a week and loved every moment. Stuart and Jules were excellent hosts. The gite is larger than the pictures show, extremely well outfitted with everything needed in the kitchen. The lounge are is very comfortable and English language TV and good WiFi is provided. The private garden is a delight. All in all, one of the best gites we have ever stayed in

We stayed at the little barn for 4 days in July, and couldn't have hoped for anything more from our stay. The barn was better equipped than my own house! I would agree with another reviewer and it looks more stunning in real life. The full kitchen was great – we made use of this for making picnics to take on our days out. The garden area was lovely, and we sat out every night of our trip, with some tasty cheeses and wine, listening to the silence. The sky is also amazingly dark so you get great opportunities to see some stars. The way that the barn is organized was great too, very private, but the owners just there if you do need anything.

Stuart and Jules were very welcoming, and have us lots of tips of where to go, and markets to visit, and a great book on cycling so let them know what you like to do and I am sure they will have some good tips. There is also a very detailed book in the barn with recommendations of restaurants and things to see. There was also a useful stack of leaflets, which is so handy for taking before you head off to places. Also a novelty was the bread van who passes by on a Sunday morning, around 9:45 am, where you can buy your morning croissants and baguettes!

The barn is in a great location, between the wine regions of Chablis and the Cote du Beaune & Cote du Nuit. There were lots of other pretty small towns along the journeys, so got to see some other more rustic towns such as Epoisse and Auxerre. The region is great for cycling - we took bikes, and cycled some of the burgundy canal, watching some canal boats navigating the locks - and through the vineyards between Beaune, and Pommard (though if it is warm, take lots of water as it is very exposed).

In summary I would say this is the perfect place to stay! We didn’t explore nearly enough of the area, and will definitely recommend the barn to friends, or most likely visit again.

Comfortable and well-equipped accommodation

  • 5 of 5

We are a mature couple who stayed at The Little Barn in July 2015.

The accommodation was spotlessly clean and very well-presented. The bed was comfortable and the shower nice and powerful. The kitchen had a good range of crockery, cutlery, pans, utensils, etc. and the wi-fi worked well throughout our stay.

Stewart and Jules live alongside and were unobtrusive but very friendly and welcoming. Stewart had answered all my questions and communicated promptly by email during the enquiry and booking process.

The Little Barn is in a good location for visiting attractions such as Fontenay Abbey, nearby chateaux and attractive mediaeval towns. Maps, guidebooks and leaflets are provided in abundance in the property.

All in all, a great place to stay, and we would have been happy to stay longer.

Viserny is situated in the Pays de l'Auxois area of the Côte d'Or 'département' of Burgundy, roughly half way between CHABLIS & BEAUNE.

There are NO shops in the village; local services & businesses can be found 12-14km away in Semur-en-Auxois (12km), Montbard (14km) or Epoisses (12km).

The medieval, walled town of SEMUR-EN-AUXOIS, sitting atop a pink granite promontory above the River Armançon, is very picturesque with its ramparts, towers and cobbled streets.

EPOISSES, world-renowned for its pungent (!) and creamy AOC (PDO) cheese, also has a small château open for visits.

MONTBARD has a TGV (high-speed train) station with a regular service to PARIS, taking a fraction over an hour. There is also 1 direct TGV train per day in each direction between Montbard and Marne-la-Vallée (Disneyland Paris), Roissy Charles de Gaulle airport (terminal 2) and Lille (Eurostar station).

The BURGUNDY CANAL passes though MONTBARD and is perfect for a walk or cycle ride; the canal's tow path now forms part of the European "GREEN WAY" CYCLE ROUTE - bikes can be hired in Montbard, Venarey-les-Laumes and Pouilly-en-Auxois to cycle along sections of the canal.

Places of HISTORICAL & CULTURAL INTEREST in the local area include the superb UNESCO World Heritage sites of FONTENAY ABBEY and the hilltop basilica at VEZELAY. ALESIA - site of the Gauls' last stand against Julius Caesar in 52BC - is just 20 minutes away.

Other places of interest include the Forges de BUFFON, the Burgundian Renaissance châteaux of TANLAY & ANCY-LE-FRANC, the small town of NOYERS-SUR-SEREIN, the hilltop villages of CHATEAUNEUF-EN-AUXOIS and FLAVIGNY-SUR-OZERAIN.

Further afield, you'll find good markets in AVALLON, CHABLIS, MONTBARD, SAULIEU and even BEAUNE & CHALON-SUR-SAONE.

DIJON & AUXERRE are each just over an hour's drive away.

For WINE LOVERS, the ROUTE DES GRANDS CRUS winds through the Côte de Nuits & Côte de Beaune vineyards. BEAUNE can be reached in under an hour and, to the north-west of Viserny, the vineyards of CHABLIS, IRANCY & SAINT BRIS are also within easy reach.

If you are interested in buying Burgundy wines, we can put you in touch with a bilingual colleague who runs private wine tours and/or tastings in the region (needs booking before arrival)..

For those who enjoy OUTDOOR PURSUITS in the countryside, the immediate area around Viserny is good for walking, running and cycling; the mostly hedged lanes are very quiet with numerous walking paths across a mixed landscape of small-scale arable & livestock fields and wooded areas.

Not far away, the MORVAN natural regional park is a great place for walkers and cyclists to explore. Water enthusiasts will enjoy its lakes, some of which offer dinghies and small catamarans for hire.

FOR BIRD WATCHERS/CYCLISTS - we know a local bilingual enthusiast who can accompany you on a CYCLING or WALKING trip (half or full day) tailored to suit your level of fitness (needs booking before arrival).

HOT AIR BALLOONING is also a wonderful experience - early morning or evening - weather & number of passengers permitting (needs booking before arrival)
