About the property

7 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, home cinema, wood-burning stove

Chalet Etoile is a recently-renovated traditional wooden chalet of 260m2 over 3 floors. It sleeps 13 in 7 bedrooms (3 double, 3 twin and one single) with 5 bathrooms. The spacious open-plan living area on the middle floor leads out through French doors onto a south-facing terrace with fabulous views of the mountains. On the lower floor is a home cinema with 42” flat-screen TV, a wide selection of DVDs, Wii and karaoke. The chalet has Wifi.

The well-equipped kitchen has everything you need to cater for your party including larder fridge, two ovens, Nespresso machine, 3 fondue sets and 2 raclette machines. There is a chest freezer on the terrace plus a small freezer in the TV room. For summer, there is a gas barbecue on the terrace. With underfloor heating, a wood-burning stove in the sitting room and two hot-water boilers to choose from, your warmth and comfort is guaranteed! The chalet is an easy 5-minute walk from the ski lift and shops of the village and the free ski bus stops within 50 yards of the chalet. There is parking for 2-3 cars.

Entertainment and eating out in Grimentz: If you want to self-cater, Grimentz has a large Co-Op plus a smaller village supermarket with a great deli. There is also a butcher with top-quality meat and live fish and deli options like cooked chickens, paella and raclette. There is a bakery/patisserie selling an extensive range of delicious fresh bread and pastries and tarts.

However, if you don't want to cater for yourself, there is a catering company in the village (Valet d'Anniviers) which will deliver delicious, home-cooked meals to the chalet, ready for you to serve.

Alternatively, there are 5 hotels in the village with restaurants plus a pizzeria and a creperie - all within walking distance of the chalet - so you can eat somewhere different every night if you wish.

Further afield are the Michelin-starred Terminus restaurant in Sierre in the valley plus the Bella Tola restaurant in St. Luc, both of which are well worth a trip.

There are four bars in the village – Chez Florioz at the base of the pistes is the après-ski bar with live music, Bar Domino at the bottom of the village is a new, sleek bar with cosy sheepskin seats and great views, The Alpina Hotel in the centre of the village has an indoor bar plus a buzzy outdoor apres-ski bar with live music. Le Country (also in the centre of the village) is the late-night option and is right next door to the disco club Shaddock.

At peak times, the Shaddock disco takes over from Le Country and is open until the early hours.

Summer activities in and around Grimentz: There are endless opportunities to walk in the valleys and mountains of the Val d’Anniviers – anything from a stroll around the village or into the neighbouring villages to day-long hikes with lunch in a mountain cabane or longer trips staying overnight in the cabanes along the way. The chalet is equipped with several Guide Books for walks of every level.

There are also over 100km of mountain bike trails in the area and bikes can be hired in the village.

At nearby Vercorin (10km) is Switzerland’s biggest tree-top trail of zip wires and rope bridges and in Niouc (10km) is Europe’s biggest bungee jump. In Zinal (5km) you can hire giant-wheeled scooters to take up the mountain in the gondola and then race down! There is canyoning in the rivers of the valley and the rock-climbing experience of the Via Ferrata – a series of fixed metal hoops in the cliff face above the Lac de Moiry in Grimentz.

For calmer activities, there are tennis courts, mini-golf and a wonderful new swimming pool with spa area (including sauna, hammam and steam room) in neighbouring Zinal.

Getting there .. . and some rules: The closest main airport is Geneva from which the chalet is a 2 hour 15 minute drive or 3 hour train and bus ride away. You can also fly to Zurich (3 hour drive) or Basel (3 and a half hour drive) or even Milan (approx 3 hour train/bus). STOP PRESS! Sion Airport which is only 35mins drive or approx 45 mins on the bus is now hosting several flights a week from London City airport and other regional airports like Bristol, Manchester, Southend, Luton and Southampton! Check out

All the major car hire companies operate from all the Swiss airports.

If driving, Grimentz is accessed from the main Valais Autoroute E62. Exit at junction 29 (Sierre Est) and follow the road up the mountain into the Val d'Anniviers. From Calais it is approx 8-9 hours' drive. You will need snow tyres and chains in the winter.

Please note the following rules to keep the chalet lovely:

No outdoor shoes (and definitely no ski boots!) in the chalet please - slippers provided. No smoking anywhere in the chalet. One well-behaved pet by agreement and at a weekly cost of £25 to cover the extra cleaning

About Nicola Dealtry

Giles and Nicola Dealtry and their 3 sons are an English family living in East Sussex. Giles was brought up in Switzerland so wanted a connection to his birth country. They bought the chalet in 2009 as a wreck and gutted it and renovated it over the course of that year.

Nicola Dealtry purchased this chalet in 2009

Why Nicola Dealtry chose Grimentz

We chose Grimentz after two years of researching Swiss ski resorts ... we wanted somewhere pretty and traditional which was still a proper village but had the infrastructure for skiing - Grimentz ticked all the boxes! It is an idyllic village with a resident population who run businesses and farm the land in summer and who all turn to the pistes in winter! The skiing is perfect for all abilities from beginners to off-piste powder hounds! And the summer walking is out of this world ..

What makes this chalet unique

There are no other chalets in the village which will sleep 13 people in proper beds/bedrooms. Chalet Etoile has a wonderful homely feel to it and, having been recently renovated with completely new electrics, plumbing, insulation etc. is a very comfortable property indeed. Unlike many rental properties in Grimentz, Chalet Etoile is within the village area and right on the ski bus route - very convenient for shopping and the ski lifts

The spaciousness of Chalet Etoile makes it a perfect base for a family holiday. The views from the chalet and the terrace are spectacular and it is in a lovely sunny position in the village

Guestbook comments from the owner

Chalet Etoile is fully-booked for the ski season until March 8th and all except one of the 2015 bookings are repeat visitors! There are therefore fewer guest reviews because everyone has already posted reviews from their previous visits. However, I will post some Visitors Book comments next time I go to the chalet in March .. Nicola

Chalet Etoile, Grimentz

  • 5 of 5

Extremely comfortable and well appointed chalet in a charming Swiss village. The property is clean and well looked after and just 5 minutes walk from the main lifts or 2 minutes in the free resort shuttle. The chalet is accurately described and the owner is very helpful and straightforward. The ski area is very good for off-piste itineraries as well as quiet and gentle piste skiing.

Great chalet and very welcoming host

  • 5 of 5

Perfect chalet... The hallway is a little bit too small when 10 people are going to ski in the morning : this is the only drawback of this dreamy place I could think of!!

First, the Chalet Etoile is very warmly decorated, typical Swiss style, with many unique details and objects. Location is perfect : 300m from the depart of main telecabine, 200m from fabulous bakery, supermarket and skishop, and the free shuttle is very practical if you don't want to walk one meter!

Second and most important : the owner was very helpful every step of the way so we could enjoy our stay. The equipment of kitchen and bathrooms is brand new and everything is working perfectly in the chalet. We were very comfortable and had plenty of space even with 6 toddlers hanging around at all times! -- we all loved the sunny terrace, the large dining table, the playroom, the easy parking, the soft mattresses, the calm, the DVDs, the fireplace, the books at disposal, the wifi, the drying machine etc etc.

(Also, the village and the ski slopes are very nice.)

Unforgettable stay and successful holidays thanks to Chalet Etoile!

Fantastic chalet

  • 5 of 5

We had a great week in Chalet Etoile and I would highly recommend the property.

As soon as you walk in the door it is obvious that the property is a much-loved, well-equipped, family home, rather than your average rental property.

There is a lovely sitting room with comfy sofas, wood-burning stove and lots of firewood. The kitchen is incredibly well equipped, with plenty of oven space. The beds are really comfy (unusually so). Lots of bathrooms and hot water, so no queuing in the mornings. All the rooms are beautifully furnished and well maintained.

We all felt so at home that we ate at home and stayed in every evening - unheard of for us not even to go out to the bar after dinner - sometimes watched a movie in the cinema room downstairs.

The property is a few minutes walk to the cable car, but not far enough to be an issue or for us to bother taking the free bus.

Nicola, the owner, was incredibly helpful and it was lovely to deal direct with her rather than via an agent.

Perfect property for us and we will definitely book again.

Ein Schweizer Chalet, wie man es sich wünscht.

  • 5 of 5

The new gondola link from Grimentz to Zinal is now open! The gondola carries 125 people from Grimentz to Zinal in only 7 minutes and of course it runs both ways so people who don't want to ski back from Grimentz to Zinal on the black Chamois run can cruise back on comfort in the lift. There is also talk of adding an easier run at the top for those who want to avoid the steep section of the Chamois .. watch this space.

Grimentz is a picturesque mountain village in the Val d’Anniviers in the Swiss canton of Valais, the same canton as Verbier, Zermatt and Crans-Montana. The Val d’Anniviers ski pass covers about 220km of pistes in 4 different areas, all linked by local bus.

Here’s what Peter Hardy of the Where to Ski and Snowboard Guide has to say about it:

“ Europe’s best-kept secret: five charming unspoiled villages beneath high, snow-sure slopes with spectacular scenery … It is incredible that the ski resorts in this valley can have remained so amazingly unspoiled when they are so close to big-name resorts such as Verbier, Crans-Montana and Zermatt. The villages all have lots of old wooden houses and barns, narrow paths and lanes and few shops except ski shops and those catering for locals’ needs.”

Fabulous skiing for all levels in winter (it is particularly renowned for superb off-piste) and extensive walking, mountain biking and climbing in the summer - Grimentz is on the Haute Route.

Golf: The World-class golf course of Crans Montana is a 40 minute drive across the Valais and there is also a local golf course at Sierre.

Ski: Grimentz has about 50 km of pistes mainly between 2100m and 2900m so is very snow-sure. The pistes range from easy blues and reds through more challenging reds and blacks to fabulous and extensive off-piste. There is a self-contained beginners’ area with “magic carpet” and graded button lifts. There are two ski schools in the village with charming, English-speaking guides. There is also a great snowpark at 2500m with a thriving youth scene with music and its own café. The neighbouring village of Zinal has a further 70km of pistes and is reached by the new gondola link from Grimentz or a 10 min drive or bus ride on the free ski bus. It is possible to ski back to Grimentz from Zinal on a spectacular black run through the woods. St. Luc/Chandolin is a 20 minute drive away and has a further 75km of south-facing slopes. There are 35km of langlauf trails, 120km of snow-shoe trails, 110km of winter hiking trails, 15km of toboggan trails and an ice rink.
