Charming Jimena house with terraces and panoramic views as far as Gibraltar

Bedrooms 1
Space 1,076 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

A restored casita in traditional style, huge terrace with BBQ

Charming, romantic, newly renovated house near the top of the village of Jimena de la Frontera, with superb views of the Sierra de Ronda, Gibraltar, the castle, and round the clock sunshine.

There is a shady garden room overlooking a mixed orchard, a bedroom balcony and a huge terrace on the top floor.

A wood burning stove and electric radiators keep the house cosy in winter.

This is the owner's holiday home, holiday rentals are welcome throughout the year, when we are not there.

The Hostal el Anon, owned by Susana Odell, a friend of ours, has a lovely rooftop pool which you may use if you have a meal in her garden restaurant, or bar terrace. see photos at bottom of the gallery.

The river Hozgarganta is a haven for swimming as it is totally natural, passing through no inhabited areas.

Jimena is easily accessed in 90 minutes by car from Malaga airport, 30 from Gibraltar, the car is an advantage for the holiday anyway.

On your doorstep is the GR7 footpath, from Tarifa to Greece! Numerous other walking possibilities include the Sierra de Libar from Cortes de la Frontera, Aljibe from la Sauceda, el Hacho from Gaucin and Crestalina from Casares.

All of these provide marvellous opportunities for bird watchers and botanists, as does the Rio Hozgarganta which runs through the wild valley behind Jimena.

For sea bathing you have a choice between the Mediterranean, for example at Torreguardiaro (35 mins) or a little further on where there is a chringuito on the beach which is one of our favorite lunch spots (called Tubelitos), or the Atlantic at Tarifa (70 mins) and beyond, the Hurrican Hotel is recommended for lunch and a bathe, or further on at Bolonia Beach(90 mins) where there are also very well presented Roman Remains.

About Lucy Wilding

My name is Lucy Wilding. I am a musician and first came to Jimena 17 years ago, to help set up a music course. I loved the village from day one, and kept coming back for music and the magic of the place.

Mostly I live in West London, by the Thames, and my most interesting music is as cellist with the Bridge String Quartet.

Lucy Wilding purchased this house in 2006

Why Lucy Wilding chose Jimena de la Frontera

I was bowled over by the stupendous views across towards Ronda, but unusually also up to the castle, allowing evening sunshine. There is almost as much space outside, on 3 levels, as inside.

In bad weather (which can happen!) it is easy to heat, with a central electric radiator, individual room heaters, and most of all a woodburning stove in the living room, making it a wonderful winter bolt-hole.

What makes this house unique

In summer I love swimming in the river, often you might be overtaken by a kingfisher!

I love piling cushions on the Moroccan style bed on the terrace

while somebody else sees to the BBQ!

This was a time we would remember for a long time, first of all because of the house, then of the village and the area around. The house is very comfortable and spacey in spite of what it looks from outside. The stairs inside helped us lose a few kilos. We would like to thank Flori who waited for us till the late night and also her son who helped us park our car and thus saved it from crushing downhill!

We highly recommend this place to the next visitors.

There is spanish television ,and you can watch DVDs or videos on the small screen. Sporting events are well covered in the village bars, for UK events try bar OBBA on the main street. Spanish and International events at La Bodega on the way out of the village towards the campsite, or Bar Espana on the main street half way up. Wifi connection is available in the house by kind permission of our neighbour and housekeeper, Flori. Please speak to her. There is a large, built in BBQ on the main terrace, as well as a heavy duty awning to provide shade. From left to right you see, the Sierra de Libar, the Sierra de Ronda, el Hacho, Crestalina, with los Reales behind it and on the far right the Rock of Gibraltar. If you wish to smoke, please do so outside, Thankyou

Charming Jimena house with terraces and panoramic views as far as Gibraltar

Fantastic Stay

  • 5 of 5

Perfect accommodation in Jimena, property had lots of space and contained everything you could ask for. Favourite part was the roof top terrace, it got the sun 8 til 8. Every meal we had on the terrace. Great panoramic views of the castle, hill and Town, loved watching buzzards, storks and kestrels from there.

One slight fault would be no door on the shower cubicle meaning water everywhere. But that wouldn't stop me recommending it, we had a superb relaxing holiday.

There is a very steep hill to get to the accommodation, only a short work from the main town but could prove difficult for some.

Very nice house in a pleasant village surrounded by great nature!

  • 4 of 5

A charming house with everything you need for an enjoyable stay. The view from the terrace is impressive, with the great valley in front of it and the castle behind and above it. The typical Spanish village with narrow and rather steep streets has nice little shops, tapas-bars and restaurants. On short distance, there is a great nature reserve and a perfectly restored castle, that goes back to the 8th century, besides other possibilities to make great walks.

We loved the town of Jimena when we stayed there this February, but this house was a disappointment. Spain was experiencing unusually cold weather at the time and the house was very pooly sealed with large cracks around the windows and doors. We were very cold. The temperature in the mornings was 11C in the bedroom. Several appliances were not working, kitchen counters were really gungy, and the owners had left personal items throughout the house.

Owner's Response: Its clear from the description that the house is owner occupied much of the time. I left on the morning these tenants came in and absolutely it had been cold. These are old houses and I wont make much apology, we wrap up warm and get the wood burners going. Possibly these particular guests should have done more research if they were looking for more modern comfort though away from the coast I dont know where they would find it. Best, Lucy

Authentic Spain!

  • 5 of 5

Perfect property for 2 people wanting a real Spanish village. Spectacular views from the terrace and more than enough shops, bars, restaurants to meet your daily needs. Coast still not far away if you want it but there is more than enough to do locally. Some fabulous walking in the Natural Park. Definitely recommend to those who want peace and tranquillity in a small friendly village.

perfect immersion into hilltop life for two

  • 4 of 5

The property was clean and as advertised. Sun is available on the top terrace

from sunrise until it sets behind the Moorish fort - being refurbished. (Sun shade available). When windy, the BBQ is best not used. House is comfortable and kitchen stocked as you would want. Music system could do with up-dating but we listened to Arabic radio stations - for a change. Internet worked fine in most areas. If hiring a car, make it a small one as JImena's streets are narrow. Comfortble bed with a/c if required. Typical temperature this week was mid 20s.

Lots of couleur local with bread, fish, gas bottle vendors arriving daily in vans around the village. (try the fish van outside supermarket Ruiz Gallan). Some excellent restaurants/bars. Try Casa Henrietta for evening tapas and L'Estacion at San Pablo watching the trains go by (sometimes). By walking you can discover the small, signless local shops incl baker and pizzeria near to the house. 45 mins sees you on the beach at Torreguadiano/Sotogrande or 70 mins to Tarifa. Gaucin to the north is worth a visit.

JImena is a great place to enjoy local Spain without the lilos. It's small and you begin to recognise the (friendly) locals after a few days. The house is up the hill but you get used to the inclines and it's good exercise!

Fantastic house in a great location

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed a wonderful week in this fantastic house. The house itself is beautifully decorated with all necessary amenities, and the views from the very private roof terrace are stunning. The village is traditional and full of character with lots of bars to enjoy tapas in. The house is an ideal base for exploring Gibraltar, Jerez, Rhonda and the white villages. Definitely hope to return!

Car: recommended

Jimena is set in lovely rolling countryside, with a castle at the top and a river round the bottom. In early summer there are many bathing pools, but for the less adventurous, the village has two public swimming pools, one at the campsite and one beside LA CUENCA restaurant. You may also use the terrace pool at the lovely Hostal el Anon for 4 euros, or if you have a meal (highly recommended)

It is on the GR7 and an ideal centre for walking and bird-watching. Griffon Vultures can almost always be seen, several types of eagle, and by the river, Kingfishers, bee-eaters and nightingales. You can walk in any direction from the village, encoutering very different sorts of scenery.

The coast, Gibraltar, beaches, supermarkets are just half an hour away by car.

Other Activities: Musical activities, country walking and bird-watching.
