About Wendy Waghorn

Wendy and Graham bought this 16th Century Manor House and Barns to renovate and have used their extensive experience to create a welcome, comfortable home from home.

Wendy worked as a Fashion Buyer for over 20 years and then spread her talents to Buying Home furnishings, Interior Design and property Developing. She was even filmed for Homes under the Hammer BBC TV.Graham worked for the BBC for 25 years as a Director of Photography and Freelance when Film Unit closed. Graham's artistic talents have been invaluable in the restoration work. We are now very proud grandparents and our children/grandchildren have been very much involved in the preparation of the Manor for our guests, trying to get a perspective from all ages.

Wendy Waghorn purchased this barn in 2011

Why Wendy Waghorn chose Ashburton

We used to have a small holiday apartment in Bigbury on Sea, so we knew this area, and loved it. Dartmouth, Salcombe, Hopes Cove and Bigbury have been holiday destinations for our family for years. The property came up at Auction and was in a sorry state.

We wanted to breathe new life into the property and gives others a chance to enjoy the ambience of this beautiful old building.

Don't worry all mod cons in this old property!

What makes this barn unique

There is a Magic about the place. It is very large. The barns are enormous. It resembles a French Manor House, and we have just added a beautiful 60 year old Olive Tree to our Courtyard which adds a softer touch to the beautiful solid stonework of the buildings.

It is a long journey renovating a property like this and all the money from the holiday bookings are going back into the property, so you are helping a part of old England to be restored by staying here.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Wendy, We would like to say Thank you for our beautiful holiday in the Old Dairy Barn.We felt very comfortable and the cottage was the best accommodation we have stayed in so far in the UK. It is so beautiful and lovely, we are going to miss it.

We enjoyed staying in Great Britain very much, even driving on the left hand side of the road! There is so much to see,and so much to miss.

Thank you very much, We look forward to returning.

The house is very large and spacious, and beautifully decorated. The owner was most helpful, and pleasant. The location was good, with access to Ashburton for shopping, and to Dartmoor for scraping the paint off your car. Overall our stay was great.

A beautiful spot and well placed to get around with a car to see lots of interesting sights.

  • 4 of 5

The property is stunning and well equipped for all ages thanks to Wendy’s attention to detail. We preferred the upstairs living space but the bedrooms and bathrooms were all clean and well equipped with very comfortable beds. Great showers too! It’s a little dark and cool downstairs when it’s raining, as it’s an old stone built barn but it was perfect when the sun was shining as you can sit out in the courtyard, read and listen to the birds. We had a mix of ages from 10 months to senior and we found that they all had something to do. My 3 year old grandson especially loved the fancy dress box. He was a different character every day.

All in all, a great place to spend time with a big family, and very well organised! Lots of instructions from the owner and with the Wii, pool table and dvd collection there was plenty for the rainy days we had. Devon is always beautiful and we picked a great spot.

Spacious and comfortable barn, ideal for two families.

  • 5 of 5

Well situated property for exploring the South West Coastal walks and beautiful Dartmoor. Nicely furnished barn with lots of seating areas, big enough to allow the kids space to play pool or other games whilst the grown ups can still have their own space too. The swing chair in the window is a wonderful thing and there was even some dress up clothes for the children that were great fun. There was table tennis outside that we weren't expecting either. We enjoyed the barn so much that although we had many fun days out, the kids were always very keen to get back to the barn to carry on playing. The bedrooms were very nicely decorated and the most comfortable beds we have come across in 6 years of renting holiday cottages. Many thanks to Wendy and Graham for their beautiful barn and help with everything.

A most enjoyable stay

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay in Ashburton and the Old Dairy Barn. The barn was very comfortable and cosy. The whole family had space to relax and a super time was had by all. We will miss the Old Library restaurant in Ashburton and hope to return to the area again in the Spring. Thank you Wendy for all of your recommendations and assistance.

The history of Pridhamsleigh Manor on the borders of Dartmoor dates back to the 16th Century when it was one of Devons most important properties.Tradition has it that in the 1700's Pridhamsleigh was lost as a gambling debt by the Gould family.

Pridhamsleigh Manor is on the southern edge of Dartmoor, close to the historic towns of Ashburton and Buckfastleigh.

The Old Dairy Barn (1860's) is a perfect base from which to explore many areas of the South Hams the coast and Dartmoor. If you have a love of the sea then places such as Dartmouth, Bigbury On Sea and Salcombe easily come to mind or explore Dartmoor where you can walk, ride, fish, white water kayak on the river Dart and visit historic towns such as Tavistock and Widecombe in the Moor.

There are fantastic pubs in Ashburton and nearby on Dartmoor where good food can be enjoyed in a true country pub setting.

PLEASE NOTE The Manor House and Barns have undergone considerable renovation, Google Earth does not show this.
