I'm a mathematician and I find a great interest in the field of Ecotourism, which is an excellent way to spend my summers!
Born and raised in Rethymno, I wouldn't dream living anywhere else in the world! I find the fact that you can be up in the mountains in a small village and just 10 minutes later you can go be at the beach truly amazing! And of course, it is sunny all year around!
Sophia Kanakaki purchased this villa in 2013
Kanakakis Estate is a family business, run by myself and my two siblings.
Our property was passed down to us through our father and is of great sentimental value, since he was the one who undertook most of the work building the villas. Consequently, all of us have put our heart and soul into it, making it what it is today.
But it didn’t take too much effort, since the hard work had already been done by Nature. It has its ways.. Take a moment to watch for the swallows and swifts swooping down each evening/late afternoon to the pool - they even fly alongside you if you are swimming - very special! Oh and.. unique sunset! The colors of the sky, the sea, the mountains.. This combination will take your breath away!
A superb place to unwind, quite central to visit other areas on the island, a truly memorable place!
Part of the attraction is the wildlife, a herd of mountain goats occupy the surrounding area outside the boundary fence. They have a daily routine strolling past, calling to one another with their bells ringing, each with their own personality!
Here you will meet the Cretan hospitality and truly realize what Ecotourism means, enjoying day-fresh eggs from the hens, freshly-harvested vegetables and fruit, as well as getting in touch with farm animals by feeding and taking care of them.
We will be at your disposal with helpful advice and information whenever needed, as we have a wide knowledge of the island and will be only willing to suggest places of interest and routes to get there.
You will enjoy the best of both worlds!
Our third stay and happy with it all. Sofia and her charming family are unobtrusive but make you feel totally at home, including presenting us with a wonderful home made moussaka. The villa is simply furnished but has all the basics and has a cosy traditional farmhouse feel about it. Very, very private, quiet and secluded, but just 3 minutes from the local village with good shops for food, bakery etc. and only 10 minutes from the throbbing heart of Rethymnon. 1 hr. from Heraklion and Chania. Car essential. Amazing 12km Episkopi beach also 10-12 mins away.
We spent 3 very nice weeks in villa Ellotia. The house is really nice and it is a pleasure to eat outside with the sea view and the sound of goat bells.
The house has good equipment and the service of cleaning is perfect. The situation is good. A car is necessary but is is not far from the nice village of Atsipopoulo, not far from Rethymnon and not far from a nice beach which was not busy even in august. We appreciate the calm. We spent very relaxing moment in family around the swimming pool.
The situation is good to visit west of Crete.
We received the warmest of welcomes. We appreciate the special attentions as fruits and cakes at arrival. Sophia, thank you so much for your kindness and your advices. A special thanks to your mom for the cretan food which was very good!
The children enjoyed going to the farm.
We will recommend this house and if we come back in Crete, we will come back to this villa!
This is a quiet, charming villa in a cluster of three, set in secluded farmland. The properties are sufficiently set apart so there is complete privacy on most of the property. Car absolutely needed as nearest village and contact of any sort is 5 mins away. Good little supermarket and most types of provisions in the village. Nearest large town Rethymno a further 10 minutes. Set up in the hills the views are wonderful in all directions. The pool is small but that seems to be the norm in Crete. Crete was quite breezy when we were there, apparently this is not unusual, and the villa is no exception as it sits up on the hill, but unless you are really bothered by this, it is not generally an issue, and it can drop to nothing just as easily. Generally it was stiller in the evenings.
The house itself has a traditional feel, quite plain but sympathetically decorated/ furnished, and perfectly comfortable as a holiday home. Definitely nothing tacky or jarring about it. 2 bathrooms, three bedrooms. The upstairs bedroom terrace is a nice touch, and as it is one of the few decent wi-fi spots (very patchy downstairs), a good place to catch up on the emails late afternoon/early evening with a gin and tonic or glass of wine and some nibbles!
No fancy extras but everything you need is here for a very relaxing stay. The maid came twice in our 8 days, and did a passable job at cleaning, changing sheets (once), etc. The pool terrace is nice and the barbecue was well used almost every evening that we were not out. Sofia and the family are gracious hosts and make themselves scarce but are always on hand if you need anything. They live in the village. At one point a local homemade supper dish (made by the mother) arrived which we baked and it was really delicious - very kind of them.
We were intending to use the house more as a base, preferring to find some secluded beaches, but in the end it was so peaceful, we spent a lot more time (with time standing very still) at the villa with nothing but the sounds of birds and bees and the gentle tinkling of goat bells in the distance, perfect for reading, sun bathing, little dips in the pool, idle chatter and total relaxation. The outdoor table tennis table was a nice touch for silly fun, except that I got beaten by my girlfriend, which I blamed on the second gin.
The beauty of this place is that if you want action, noise, excitement, it is only 15 mins away. This is a complete bolthole of quiet - so you can have it both ways!
Kanakakis Estate is extremely peaceful and ideally placed for exploration of Crete, since it is close to the central national road of the island. A prime location in the heart of one of the few oak forests in Europe with breathtaking view less than a 10 min drive from the City of Rethymno, 1.5 km outside the picturesque village of Atsipopoulo.
Atsipopoulo provides amenities with a supermarket with delivery service, coffee shops, restaurants with traditional Cretan food, patisseries, a hairdresser's, bakeries, pharmacies, ATM machine, etc.
Rethymno offers a variety of activities, scuba diving, hiking, water sports, etc.
Some interesting monuments and sights to visit are the Fortezza castle, the Venetian harbour, Loggia, the Municipal Garden, the Archaeological museum of Rethymno, the Historical and Folk Art museum of Rethymno, Preveli Monastery, Rethymno Centre of Contemporary Art, Old Town, Sacred Monastery of Arkadi, etc.
The surrounding area of Kanakakis Estate is full of green hills, fields with olive and oak trees and the whole area is famous for its spectacular view of the forest, whereas in horizon one can see the Cretan Sea and the City in a magical combination.
