This villa (Cottage does not adequate to describe this stunning property of 1,800 Ft.of sheer luxury) with its own private fishing, private mooring for kayaks and canoes, timber decking and 200 foot elevated railed walkway along a section of the river leading to its own little 'beach' area positioned in the middle of the river with stunning close far-reaching river views down and upriver, ancient woodland on both riverbanks, in total and utter seclusion in these 1.5acres of landscaped gardens dotted with wild flowers, indigenous shrubs, trees and plants that is a haven for wildlife and songbirds with the river flowing through for over 700 metres width of the incredibly beautiful gardens that also has in addition its own stream leading down to the river with two bridges that bisect the gardens as well as a pond and its own family of pheasants wandering in the shrubbery with the occasional shy elegant deer to to be found also roaming through this wonderful habitat.

Enchanting villa in the Vale of Avoca: Hidden in a winding valley sheltered in what must be one of the most outstandingly beautiful scenery in all of Western Europe - the Wicklow Mountains - lies this truly enchanting villa that is set like a glittering emerald just above the banks of the River Avonbeg whose clear waters sparkle and gleam as they cascade and wind their way for over 700 metres through the one and a half acre gardens that surround and enclose this property with ancient woodland and wild flowers dotting these gardens along with wildlife such as the lilting songbirds, the butterflies, the bees, the river trout that abounds in the river and yet this oasis of peace and tranquillity has within a ten-minute drive, all the amenities, restaurants, pubs, shops, museums, historical buildings, arboretums, walks, craic and music that one could wish for if one could bear to leave this place whose soothing atmosphere washes away all worries restoring calm and balm to body and soul as well as a delight to all the senses.

The Cottage/Villa and area: The walls of this luxury cottage are over two foot thick: this stunning villa-style cottage was gutted, renovated and extended lovingly and painstakingly over a three-year period which works were completed in April 2011. The walls were forged from the river stone and Wicklow granite that was hewn from the local quarries, with the gravelled chippings around the cottage also coming from the same sources, the silver glints in the granite showing the history of the area which was once, in ancient times, mined for silver and gold and also the rich fertility and beauty of its land being a source of turmoil and possession throughout Irish history until the last century when peace was hard won by the Irish people whose leaders had wills of granite and hearts full of compassion, as do most Irish people, they brim with compassion and kindness woven with veins running with hard work and a sense of humour and twinkling eyes. The valleys and mountains of this area are steeped in the history of a proud people and strong leaders, both men who women who had dignity but who also knew how to laugh and enjoy life even in hard times, and they still do along with an unmatched sense of humour and warmth.

Attractions in this area of County Wicklow: Once behind the 18-foot high electronic timber gate, the sense of seclusion, utter peace and beauty is unsurpassed: however the local area abounds with many attractions among which are: Brittas Bay within a 25-minute drive, offering a broad expanse of golden beaches; ethereal Glendalough, the site of St. Kevin's monastic ruins and lakes; Charles Stewart Parnell's Avondale House, Parnell being the 'Uncrowned King of Ireland'; The famous Meetings pub; Avoca Wollen Mills, one of the oldest mills in Ireland that produces wonderful textiles with a fabulous cafe serving luscious food, all holiday visitors being given not just a warm welcome on their arrival by a very welcoming local lady but also with a selection of those same top quality wholesome Avoca foods freshly bought that day along with a great bottle of pink or white champagne and a bottle of excellent white or red wine too ; Mount Usher the beautiful gardens in Ashford whose centred in a square of chic shops/ cafes; Powerscourt Demesne in attractive Enniskerry village with its fabulous gardens, waterfall and stately house.

This villa/cottage is located in an absolutely stunningly beautiful setting tucked beside but in a slightly elevated position above the Avonbeg River, one of the most famous rivers in Ireland as it forms, a mile further downstream the Avoca river after it merges with the meeting of the waters at The Meetings Pub made famous by Thomas Moore the songwriter who was inspired to write 'The Last Rose of Summer' when he was living in this area. The river - which holds brown trout - courses through these one and a half acre gardens for at least 900 metres with granite steps cut into the riverbank for dining by the river with a mooring for a kayak or a canoe built into the granite rocks whilst further down there is a winding elevated walkway with steel and timber rails that follows the line of the river for at least 150 feet and leads eventually to an outcrop of ancient boulders and a flat area which offers fabulous views both up and down river as though one were actually floating on it.

Fell in love with this home!

  • 5 of 5

This home is an absolute piece of heaven! If you love gardens, birds, nature in general....you will love this place. The grounds are stunning and you fall asleep at night to the sound of the river, which is very soothing. The home is warm, comforting and beautiful. My kids loved the tree houses and we all enjoyed trying to identify the many kinds of birds that are in the area.

We used the house as a home base to explore the Wicklow area and the location was perfect. We spent one day at the house just relaxing, napping, having tea and perusing Jeanne's books...what a perfect day!

John was a wonderful host and greeted us with fresh bread, wine and an apple tart....loved it all.

I would definitely visit this home again!

Our favorite place of all...

  • 5 of 5

My son and I are on a long-term travel adventure, and this is our absolute favorite home of all those we have rented on our journey. To say that it is beautiful does not do it justice; the atmosphere here, both the home and the property, is healing, peaceful, and inspiring. Even those words do not do justice to this home. Everywhere you look, your eyes meet with something beautiful. The sound of the river is magical to hear every time you step outside, and we loved hearing the songs of the birds. We enjoyed the privacy and quiet this home offers, while still being very close to Arklow where we could acquire anything we needed. We stayed for a week in January, the middle of winter when the trees are bare and many plants are dormant, and it was breathtakingly beautiful here. I can only imagine how glorious it is during the spring and summer when the extensive gardens are in bloom, and in the autumn when the leaves fall. Every season has its beauty if we are open to seeing it. The new treehouse is an incredible addition; a work of art in itself and built with love and care, like everything else here. The treehouse also has electricity and a heater so it can be enjoyed at night, and its own deck overlooking the river and property.

For those wanting a review on the practical side of things, the beds are extremely comfortable and we both slept very well during our stay. The home is equipped with absolutely everything you need. It is spotlessly clean. The bedrooms have both blinds and curtains so you can choose whether you want the morning sun to wake you or if you want to keep the room darker for sleeping in.

Jeanne, thank you so much for opening your home to others. We will be forever grateful that we were able to experience this amazing place. We loved everything about it, and we definitely want to return for another, much longer, stay.

impossibly charming and idyllic

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I rented Brook Cottage for 1 week to accommodate our mixed generation family of 5 in honor of our parents 50th Anniversary. The cottage was everything that we hoped for and more---very spacious and beautifully appointed, comfortable, cozy, clean and gracious. The grounds are magical. We loved it and felt honored to get to stay. Thanks Jeanne!

A house that hugs you

  • 5 of 5

The photographs do not do it justice, it is so much more beautiful than you can imagine. From when you drive down the road and through the gates you enter another World. The house and gardens hug you and squeeze you and force you to relax. My husband has never been interested in birds and after the first day he was giving a running comantry of the birds visiting the feeding trays. The water is so calming and the grounds are so well looked after. The owner has put her heart and soul into this magical place and we felt so pleased that we could share her beautiful home. The warm welcome and the stunning house and gardens just make you want to stay for ever. We will surely be back.

Enchanting, Delightful, Inspiring Treasure

  • 5 of 5

As I wrote in the Visitor Book....."where do I start"

I think the Title I gave Brook Cottage in my review says it all, from the very lovely, friendly warm welcome from John to the Enchanting Gardens and River and the so Inspiring Interior that Jeanne has left her mark on Brook Cottage is really a Beautiful and Magnificent Holiday Cottage.

There is so much to take in, once inside the Cottage you never tire of investigating and spotting the so many differant features and artifacts of the house, then once you venture outdoors the beautiful gardens that are home to some lovely plants, trees and wildlife, the savannah style tree house and to top it all off the beautiful sound and sight of the Avonbeg River running through this Oasis.

On behalf of our Family I would like to take this opportunity to thank Jeanne, John and Rita for the lovely time we had at Brook Cottage....

"can't wait to come back soon"....

secluded cottage in beautiful surroundings

  • 5 of 5

This was a perfect place for a really restful escape, deep in the heart of Wicklow.

The cottage was equipped with very amenity you could want............the surrounding grounds were just stunning, with a private, secluded walk along the Avonbeg river.

We would strongly recommend this to our friends, and we would be confident that they would enjoy their stay.

it would be hard to find anything better..........excellent.
