About Ed & Sue Stollery
Sue and I are a couple with four "grown-up" children living in London and Sydney. Together with Sue's sister, Jenny we have a charming house on Crete which we visit as often as we can but love to share with other travellers looking for something a bit different. We have been delighted with the feedback from our guests over the last few years. We have ourselves been house-guests all over the world so we will do our best to make Thomas House even more special and welcoming in future. Please get in touch if you have any questions or would like further information.
Ed & Sue Stollery purchased this House in 2009
Why Ed & Sue Stollery chose Kokkino Chorio
The house is about ten years old and was owned until 2009 by Sue and Jenny's brother, Emlyn Thomas. Emlyn travelled the world and collected art, memories and curios wherever he went. The house reflects his interests and contains many signed posters from celebrities and sportsmen he encountered like Madonna, Muhammad Ali, Neil Diamond and U2, together with interesting books and music. Emlyn loved Crete and settled in Kokkino Chorio as the ideal location to explore the beaches, mountain walks and hidden tavernas of the island.
What makes this House unique
If you could drop a pin on the best location in Crete, it would be difficult to beat Kokkino Chorio. The house is a quiet retreat, away from the hustle and bustle but still within easy reach of village life, the airport, Chania, great beaches, mountain walks and drives, and tavernas of every description. The sun shines, the sea breeze cools and the wine flows in Western Crete! Do visit if you can.

Couple stay in July
This holiday was just what we wanted, lovely clean house with interesting art, little pool, fantastic views, local restaurant and shop within walking distance. Would highly recommend for a couple wanting to get away from it all.
Thank you Ed & Sue for letting us stay in THomas House, We all enjoyed our stay, Had everything you could ask for even a dishwasher very spoilt. Views was amazing. Would love to return again sometime. Car is essential unless you don’t mind walking which we didn’t.
Excellent. Fabulous views. Peaceful.
We had a lovely stay at Thomas House. A very well appointed house perfect for a couple wanting to get away for peace and quiet. Everything as described. Comfortable bed. Aircon. Interesting artwork. Lots of good restaurants nearby. We tried Ed and Sue’s favourites in Plaka (Elpis) and Almyrida (Elia & Thyme) both good. Plaka and To Yaladiko in Kokkino Chorio are walkable. The day out to the traditional Cretan country restaurant up in the hills (Ntounias aka Dounias) was fun with spectacular views on the way. Rethymno and Chania harbours have lots of restaurants to choose from.
Overall we would recommend this holiday for relaxation and good food.
Many thanks for your kind words, We are delighted you enjoyed the house and some of our taverna recommendations. We are constantly discovering new great places to eat and relax so do come again!
It is very unusual that there is a problem parking right in front of the house, it must have been a particularly busy time as we have not received similar comments previously.
It is certainly true that a small car is best suited to the local roads and exploring off the beaten track in Crete generally.
The house and pool were gorgeous- exactly as described, with everything you could need. The local area is stunning, and all of the restaurant recommendations were spot on. We could have easily stayed another week!
Lovely property with spectacular views
We had a really enjoyable stay at Thomas House. The views from the property really are superb from every angle both during the day and the lights everywhere visible at night. The pool area was a great sun trap and just the right size for cooling off in as it was really hot for June whilst we were there.
We just had a few minor issues though nothing that detracted from still having an enjoyable stay. On arrival at the house the floors were not particularly clean and we had to give the bath a clean ourselves and there were hairs on the bottom. We have been used to having a mid stay clean in other properties when staying longer than a week and this would have been helpful. if not this then just a spare set of bed linen left would have been good considering we stayed 11 nights.
As stated these were just several minor issues and overall we would very much recommend this lovely characterful house, and would certainly like ro stay again if we return to this area of Crete. Thank you.
Thanks for your kind words. We will pass on your comments to our housekeeper to ensure everything is perfect for future guests. An additional linen change is available on request.
Kokkino Chorio is a tranquil and traditionally Greek village around 40 minutes drive from Chania in the west of Crete. (It was the setting for the film classic "Zorba the Greek" starring Anthony Quinn). There is a small supermarket run by Georgos and his mother (try the eggs, yogurt and honey) about 5 minutes walk into town, together with a good family taverna.
Plaka, just down the hill is marginally busier with three excellent tavernas in the centre (Elpis is our favourite) with complementary wifi and a few shops.
Almyrida, another 5 minutes down the hill is a bustling seaside village with a long sandy beach, ideal for families and the young-at-heart alike. There are a dozen or so beach-side cafes and restaurants with everything from pizza to the best catch of the day. There are many shops of every description, a chemist, cashpoints, day trips, watersports, a dive shop, spa, taxis and car hire outlets. Buses run to Chania from here.
There are numerous villages, spectacular mountain drives, walks, secluded beaches, ancient monuments and fabulous tavernas to discover within easy reach.
Chania is a delightful town with museums, shops, street markets and restaurants all set around the historic Venetian harbour. We will be pleased to let you have our personal recommendations when we hear from you.
