Overview

About the property

Five bedroom detached cottage sleeping 14/15 with central heating

Kerguelen is a traditional Breton stone farmhouse set in its own large, sheltered private garden.

The sea and beautiful clean sandy beaches are just a short walk, as is the market village of Plougasnou where you will find all you will need for your self-catering holiday.

The ground floor comprises two rooms; a large salon with wood-burning stove set in an imposing fireplace, a fully equipped kitchen/dinning room (dishwasher (Bosch), electric kettle, microwave, large table with benches seating for 14). There is also a cloak area and utility room, with WC, and washing machine.

Climbing the traditional turning staircase the first floor has three bedrooms; one double, one double+single and a bunk-room sleeping four. All with views onto the large garden, and if you crane your neck out to the left a glimpse of the sea. There is also a shower/toilet.

The top floor has one double bedroom and another with 3 singles. There is also a bathroom with bath and hand-basin, and a separate room with wc

Beaches: Kerguelen is an ideal location for a beach holiday as there are many superb sandy beaches all with a short drive, enough to find a new one for each day of your visit, if you are so inclined. Some with large and panoramic views, others in small rocky coves. Some with convenient near-by car parking others hidden and requiring a walk. All offer safe crystal clean waters for bathing, if a little cold for some. Primel beach is the nearest beach to Kerguelen (1km distance) and has a safety patrol in summer.

Other beaches worth a visit; Plougasnou beach, Vilin Izella beach, set in a nature reserve with nearby water mill, Port Blanc, Le Guerzit, St Samson and Terénez with it's boats and Cafés.

Local activities: The area around Kerguelen and Plougasnou offers the possibility of many varied activities.

-Walking along the dramatic granite coast is a good way to get the heart beating as you climb and descend the many cliffs and take in the beautiful unspoiled seascapes.

-Terénez sailing club offers sailing lessons in catamaran yachts, and the possibility of visiting the bay of Morlaix, beginners are welcomed.

-Boat trips around the Bay Morlaix with visits to the Chateau Taurreau leave from the near-by port of Le Diben.

-Morlaix provides an historic glimpse into the past with walks or by tourist 'train' (fun for the children) through the narrow alleys between the colourful wood-framed houses. La maison Pondallez is worth a special visit.

-Brest (1 hr by road) has an interesting maritime museum and Oceanopolis amoungst other attractions. Shopping!

-The fabulous forest of Huelgoat in the Mont d'arrée (1 hr road) with its enormous moss covered boulders makes for an interesting day out.

About Philip James

English emigre to Finistere since 1996. I moved mainly for the swimming, as the sea here though cold, is fantastically clear and invigorating. Plougasnou beach is for me the very best place to swim and I have tried a few other places around the world.

Philip James purchased this farmhouse in 2001

Why Philip James chose Plougasnou

Kerguelen was the second house I bought in Plougasnou. I had always noticed this house as it slowly became overgrown and dilapidated, and by chance passed by on the day the 'for sale' sign was put up. It is a beautifully grand farmhouse in a sunny sheltered spot. One day I will live here, but with grown up children it is far too big, thus it'll earn it's keep as a gite. I hope you enjoy it.

What makes this farmhouse unique

Equidistant from beach and village, 1km. All you need for a serene summer vacation.

Guestbook comments from the owner

A delightful rustic experience

  • 5 of 5

We spent a wonderful week with a family group of 12 exploring the coast on foot, bikes (rented in Plougasnou) and cars. The farmhouse has a wonderful kitchen for preparing meals with produce from local markets. It's a really beautiful area. The property is well described in the listing. Philip was very accommodating and helpful. Highly recommended.

Rustic charm and great beaches

  • 5 of 5

The house was fabulous, just what we needed for a break with extended family. The house was lovely and clean with lots of rustic charm. The kitchen was where we spent most of the time chatting and drinking wine as cooked and ate. The kids loved the huge garden too! Lovely beaches in the area, we visited quite a few despite the weather. We also visited a couple of relatively local swimming pools in Lannion and St Pol De Leon. The market in Plougasnou on a Tuesday morning is great for local produce, definitely worth a visit.

Owner's Response: Thanks for a great comment. I am glad you had a nice time and enjoyed the house and area. The kitchen is now even bigger and better this year; 2015, after a total revamp. I hope you will come back and enjoy it as much.

Great House

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed the house, the sea, Finistère, even the weather was very nice, we thought. There were days we sat in the garden reading in the sun without any coats on. I'd say that's nice enough for this time of the year. We even went for a new years swim at Vilin Izella beach! I hope we didn't leave the house too messy. With the weather and all the kids running in and out of the house, it was hard to keep it decent. It truly is a great house in a great spot. We had no idea where we would end up exactly, as it was the first time in Bretagne for all of us, but it is definitely a place to come back to. Sis New Year 2014

Owner's Response: Thank-you for a great review, and I was thinking you had terrible weather, it seemed like non-stop rain, but glad you could get out and about even a swim in the sea! Yikes. Philip

Maison agréable avec grand jardin à proximité d’une tres belle plage

  • 4 of 5

  • 5 of 5

Remerciements.
