The Crook is a beautiful, Grade II listed house, dating back to the 18th century and located in the heart of the quintessential English market town of Stow-on-the-Wold. Sitting on top a hill, surrounded by the stunning Cotswold countryside, Stow is well known for its many antique shops, pubs and restaurants, and is an ideal base for exploring the wider region, including the many beautiful towns and villages of the Cotswolds, as well as further afield places, such as Stratford-upon-Avon, Oxford and Bath.
The house contains a wealth of character features, including wooden beams, flagstone floors, exposed walls and fireplaces. Complementing these period features, The Crook has been decorated, furnished and equipped in a warm and contemporary style, with modern facilities such as wireless internet access, a flatscreen TV and a well presented kitchen.
The Crook sleeps a maximum of 6+2 guests, in four bedrooms, with the +2 room being an interconnecting room suitable for children. There is a family bathroom and a ground floor cloakroom. To the rear of the property is a lovely courtyard garden and free on street parking is available either outside or close to the cottage. The Crook is perfect for families or a group of friends looking for a relaxing break in the heart of one of England's most beautiful market towns.
Booking and payment
Character Cottages is a marketing agency and we do not own or manage any of the cottages listed on our website. Bookings made via us form a legal agreement directly between you and the property owner.
For bookings commencing more than 10 weeks in advance, a 30% non-refundable deposit is required to confirm the booking. The balance payment is then due 10 weeks prior to arrival.
All payments are made subject to the cancellation policy set out in the standard Booking Conditions.
A security deposit of £250 is payable, which is returned after the letting period, subject to an inspection of the property. For the avoidance of doubt, guests are requested to leave the property in a reasonable condition, consistent with the property's appearance upon arrival. In the event that the owners, or their appointed housekeepers, have to spend additional time tidying up after your departure, then the cost of this extra time may be deducted from your security deposit. The security deposit is payable prior to arrival at the property, via a bank transfer or a valid debit or credit card.
The maximum occupancy of the property, including its grounds, is eight guests, at any point during your stay. Unauthorised over occupancy is a breach of our terms and conditions and may result in the cancellation of your booking and additional charges. Please consult us prior to booking if you wish to discuss the possibility of having more than eight guests at the property.
Infants who sleep in a cot do not count towards the occupancy figure, however, due to space restrictions, the occupancy figure may only be exceeded by one additional infant.
Regrettably, The Crook does not accept pets.
Bed linen and towels
Bed linen and towels are provided for guests.
Arrival and departure times
Arrival time is after 3pm and departure time is by 10am. Access is via a key safe, therefore it does not matter if you are arriving late at night.
Bed sizes and configurations
Bedroom 1: King size bed
Bedroom 2: King size bed
Bedroom 3: Super king size bed
Bedroom 4: 2 small single beds (75cm wide), ideal for children
Please note that bedroom 4 is linked to bedroom 3 and is a small eaves room, with restricted head height on both sides of the room and no separate clothes storage space.
Fuel and logs
Electricity and gas are included in the letting price. There is a wood burning stove in the living room and an open fireplace in the courtyard garden. Logs are provided under a fair usage policy (there is an honesty box for contributions towards the cost of logs used).
The property has free wireless internet access and a Freeview TV with DVD player. A cordless telephone is also provided, with an honesty box for the cost of calls made.
Free on street parking is available directly outside The Crook. Spaces are generally available in the evening, however, during the day parking directly outside the house can sometimes be difficult, especially in peak season. In this situation, it is possible to pull up outside the house to unload luggage and further free parking is available close by. Full location and access details are provided to guests.
Where a letting exceeds nine nights, a mid-stay clean, bed linen and towel change may be included in the price. Please check with us to confirm. Additional housekeeping services may be available on request.
Child friendly facilities
A travel cot (without linen), high chair and safety gate are provided.
A small quantity of initial consumables is provided for your convenience (eg. tea, coffee, sugar, dishwasher tablets, washing up liquid, soap, washing powder, toilet rolls, etc), however, you should not expect the quantity of these provisions to be sufficient for the duration of your stay.
Accessibility, health and safety
The Crook is an old, Grade II listed property and has many character features, including narrow and steep stairs, low beams and multiple floors, which could pose difficulty to guests with limited mobility, or carrying babies, both in terms of their general movement and their ability to quickly exit the house in the event of an emergency.
The smoke and CO detectors operate on a sound only basis and, therefore, those who have serious impairment of hearing may not be able to hear the alarm systems and could be at risk.
The front door of The Crook opens onto the street and guests with young children should take particular care to ensure that the children are supervised when the door is opened.
No smoking is permitted throughout the property.
Stow Horse Fair
The Stow Horse Fair is held twice a year, on the Thursday closest to 12th May and the Thursday closest to 24th October. This is a traditional fair for gypsies and travelling people to meet up and trade, which dates back to 1476, when its Charter was granted. Stow is very busy for a day or two before and after each fair, and a number of shops, pubs and restaurants are closed. Whilst many visitors enjoy the colour and vibrancy associated with the fairs, other visitors prefer to avoid Stow on these dates.
The Crook is located on one of Stow's busier roads and some guests in the front bedrooms may be aware of traffic noise at night. The cottage is, however, set back from the road and is also close to a junction, so traffic speed is limited past the house.
In order to provide you with as much detail of our properties as possible, we sometimes use wide angle photography, which can make certain rooms, or spaces, appear larger than they actually are. Wherever possible, we try to include a floorplan, with detailed dimensions of rooms and areas. If you have any queries regarding the size of any rooms or spaces, please do not hesitate to contact us.
