Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday apartment in Cupra Marittima - Seaview Terrace Apartment

Newly renovated apartment in hilltop medieval hamlet. Sleeps 5

The Seaview Terrace Apartment is in the former Cardinal's home, a soaring cream stone 17th century building gazing down on the bay of the Adriatic. It is recently renovated to a high standard with well-equipped contemporary kitchen, new beds and always freshly laundered linen. Sitting room furniture is modern leather sofa , and work area with desk and seat and a small computer for guests' use. TV unit with DVD player and DVDs for guests' use.

Off this is the top bedroom with double bed and windows opening on to a view of verdant landscape Adjoining is a shower room and toilet.

The large terrace at ground level overlooks the sea and has a dining table for six and sun loungers.

About the area: Le Marche (pronounced Le Markay) is a wonderfully undiscovered part of Italy even though it is the direct neighbour of Tuscany and Umbria. It borders the beginning of Southern Italy .

The beaches at Cupra and Grottamare and San Benedetto along the coast are broad and sandy and swimming is safe rather than dramatic. It is possible to have wind surfing courses; there is a tennis club along the beach and if you prefer indoor swimming an Olympic size, newly built indoor pool at Grottamare.

in the North at the Conero peninsula the landscape is more rugged and a national park lies above the popular beach with its several restaurants.

There is impressive sightseeing with limestone peaks pitted by deep gorges and caves , and cavers can find complexes of ancient caves to explore.

The Sibillini Mountain Range which is a dramatic jagged outline at the end of the region borders it with the highest point reaching 2476 metres at Monte Vettore.

The topography below this is undulating hills and agricultural land, rounded hills often with fortified towns a millennium old, . Vineyards and olive groves abound.

Le Grotte di Frasassi (caves) are a unique feature of Le Marche.

Music and festivals: Le Marche is known for its music festivals throughout the spring summer and autumn months . Pedaso in the South, was home to Rossini and there is an annual festival of his work there.

The beautiful medieval city of Macerata is famous for its impressive Opera house the Sferisterio, an enormous open air theatre built in 1819 Every year it hosts some of the best opera stars in Italy for its summer season

The Music Festival at Fermo is held July - August.

Theatre and Chamber Music Festival, Camerino is held August International Piano Competition in Senigallia takes place August - September.

Jazz by the Sea at Fano is July Ancona Jazz Festival - early November.

There are many festivals of local food and wine and some with themes.

Le Marche Festa with a military pageant recreating the Napoleonic period at Tolentino's Castello della Rancia.

Sports: Near the apartments: there is a cycle path stretching from Cupra through Grottamare and on to San Benedetto. Bikes can be hired in San Benedetto and inquire at the tourist office for other places. Hotel La Perla in Cupra often rent bikes as well.

About Angela Neustatter

I am Angela Neustatter (in photo) a journalist and author , as well as a wife and mother, and, rather appropriately, my latest book A Home For the Heart is all about the importance of home in our lives, and Cupra is a place I now regard as a home.

I also found the area fascinating and have used my profession as a writer to describe in on the website www.stayinlemarche.com

Angela Neustatter purchased this apartment in 2004

Why Angela Neustatter chose Ascoli Piceno

I bought the apartment on whim, because I have always loved Italy, and because the area was so unspoilt - not even an English newspaper in the shops - and so welcoming , as well as stunning me with its sense of space and light and beauty.

An added joy was becoming friends with the delightful Ulissi family who owned the Cardinal Apartment building for 30 years and renovated it just eight years ago. They have done it with love and care and whenever I go there I feel uplifted.

My husband, who thought I was committing an act of folly when I first said I was using my savings to buy the apartment, now loves it as much as I do.

What makes this apartment unique

The apartment is in a hamlet on a hilltop, a tiny community where people have lived for decades. They have been very kind and friendly and Alberto, an elderly neighbour, is always full of greeting when we arrive. He also cooks pizza for 400 (for free) when the September festival takes place in Cupra Alta.

Yet just a ten minute walk down the winding, cobbled road is the seaside town of Cupra Marittima with a couple of supermarkets, a lovely greengrocer and excellent fish shop (this is one of Italy's key fishing areas) and a good butcher. There are other shops and a couple of restaurants, but it is a quiet place - you have to go to San Benedetto - 15 mins drive, ten mins on the train - for more nightlife and street life.

Cupra Marittima

  • 4 of 5

We had a gorgeous holiday in Cupra, a charming small town which is not touristy but welcoming in a good old fashioned way. We loved exploring the area, still little known.

And the apartment is all you could ask for. Very pretty, well equipped and with that all important thing: a large comfortable sofa for flopping in the evening.

We at our evening meal under the stars on the sizeable terrace which has a large table and seating for six plus.

If it's relaxation and a long sandy beach and calm sea you want, this is as good as it gets in my view.

This was already the 5th time we stayed in the apartment. We absolutely love the very spacious rooms, well equiped kitchen. The best asset is the big terrace with a magnificent views. The area has great beaches and restaurants. Also plenty to see and do.

Lovely apartment; spectacular terrace

  • 5 of 5

The apartment is comfortable, stylishly furnished and well equipped, but probably the best thing about staying here is the terrace. You have panoramic views, the beach to one side; the hills to the other - plus it's a great vantage point for viewing the village itself (I enjoyed watching the local activity, as I sat there with my book and glass of wine).

Cupra Marritima is a proper town, not twee - and all the better for it. We found everything we needed in the local shops and despite our pitiful Italian, got on fine, mainly by pointing and nodding furiously.

The village where the apartment sits is particularly lovely, with the stone work beautifully restored (take your camera). It is up a steep hill, but we did the walk several times a day quite happily - although I am not sure I would fancy my chances of pushing a buggy up there.

There is a good choice of restaurants (although not everything was open when we were there in April), and lovely walking (or cycling) along the promenade.

We plan to go back to the town in the summer (although sadly not to this apartment, as it was already booked), to take advantage of the huge sandy beach and the watersports.

Charming Italian Seaside Apartment

  • 5 of 5

Angela's charming apartment overlooks the very Italian seaside town of Cupra Marittima. It is nestled among the commanding buildings of the old citadel, high on the hill above the more modern town that sits along the beach. The flat is comfortable and very well equipped but its best feature is the terrace where you can eat late into the evening - e.g. fresh locally made ravioli with fresh pesto and a big salad, perfect! - watching the town below become a twinkle of lights. The most peaceful two weeks I've had in years, and you can also feel righteous after doing the walk back up the hill from town. Lots of fascinating places to visit in the area (Ascoli Piceno, Fermo etc.) but be sure to visit the Presepe just around the corner from the flat - a truly enchanting experience for young and old.

Cupra: what an experience!!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this very well-equipped apartment for one week and we enjoyed it very much. The terrace and the great views are beyond imagination. Everything that was described in the listings of this apartment were true. A great extra is the bedroom, with bathroom and terrace downstairs. We extremely liked the nice village of Cupra that is - in our view - the most relaxed one at the coast. Great restaurants in the neighbourhood and nice medieval little town to visit. Don't forget to go for hikes in the Siblisi mountains. In short: to be highly recommended. Lastly: many thanks to Angela and her husband for the hospitality.

The joy of Le Marche is that it has it all: the Adriatic coast runs down the edge of the region with long sandy beaches known as the Riviera delle Palme, and some dramatic areas of cliffs and coves. The countryside is verdant with woodland, undulating hills and a profusion of historically interesting medieval hamlets and villages. Among the grander historic towns are Ascoli Piceno, created from the local travertine stone, set on a river with a backdrop of mountains; Loreto, Fermo and Macerata famed for its annual international opera festival. There are music festivals throughout the spring, summer and autumn months throughout Le Marche. Urbino in the far north is where the Renaissane started and there is a huge art collection in the architecturally magnificent Palazzo Ducale.

The Sibillini National Park in the South is flanked by soaring mountains and offers walking, cycling. There is skiing in the resorts of Sassotetto, Maddalena and Bolognola.

Golf and water sports on offer.

Golf: Il Auri Golf Club (Montefiore dell’Aso) 9 hole golf course (par 70) including putting-green, pitching-green, golf-academy, driving-range.

Conero Golf Club has 18 holes (6,550 yards, par 72) and a 9 hole executive course for short game practice - with water features.

Ski: Ski in the Sibillini Mountains in the uncrowded Sarnano area

at resorts: Sassotetto, Maddalena, Bolognola Idea for learning as well as advanced skiing.

Excellent skiing in Abruzzo just over the Southern border of Le Marche at resorts such as Campo Felice, Roccarasso, Campo Imperatore.

Also snow boarding possible.

In free time there are cultural sights to explore.
