About the property

3 bedroom, 2.5 bath house, Lake Views from large deck, Close to town

This newly-updated former fisherman's cottage features a homey mix of vintage and mid-century modern styling while the open plan looks out to a large deck with built-in seating and to relaxing views of the Chautauqua Lake shore line and it’s surrounding rolling hills.

It is a short ¼ mile walk or bike to the Village of Bemus Point, New York with it’s coffee shop, park, restaurants, market, shops, floating stage, tennis or golf. Long Point State Park, the Chautauqua Institute, Midway Amusement Park, shopping in Lakewood (including Quilter’s Haven) and historic Jamestown are all within a 10 mile radius.

Easy access to beaches at Presque Isle & Lake Erie, Buffalo-Niagara Falls, and the Finger Lakes. There are many wineries dotting Lake Erie & Chautauqua shorelines.

Local farm stands, Wegman’s and fresh eggs are a short drive away. If you'd rather cook & BBQ yourself, we have a large fully-furnished kitchen and an outdoor BBQ near the deck with patio table, chairs and umbrella.

There is a private dock for fishing or boating or tying up your kayak and a pedal boat is available to guests. The public boat launch is nearby. A firepit is at water’s edge for late night sing-alongs and marshmallows or just sit, relax and enjoy the ducks, ripples and greenery.

We, family and friends have experience with allergies and physical limitations. Likewise, we are passionate about protecting the amazing Chautauqua ecosystem. Quilting friends are frequent invitees when we are here. The property was purchased and is being constantly improved with these in mind. We’d love to offer our cottage to guests with similar concerns & interests. Visit our website to find out more.

While it cannot be considered fully “accessible”, it is friendly for many with limited walking mobility. We have 3-step access on a gently sloping lot. There is a downstairs bedroom with wide walkways and master bath with safety chair for the shower and flexible shower hose. Large kitchen and open plan make it easy to move around indoors. The transition from the house to large deck through the sliding door is easy and outdoor terrain to the lake is gently sloping.

CAVEAT to super tall folks: 7’ ceilings, on both floors.

Great Lakeside cottage. Perfect location for getting to both ends of the lake!

  • 5 of 5

We had an absolutely perfect week at Claire and Andy’s place. The place was very well stocked with everything you need. We had great dockage for our boat. The town of Bemus Point is walking distance away! We can’t wait to return!! Loved our time there!

Nice stay despite the weather

  • 4 of 5

Claire made coming in to town from Arizona so easy for us. Loved the fact that this cottage was available to rent Wednesday to Tuesday, as we flew with flights on Wednesdays.

It's so wonderful that linens and towels are provided! I've rented several houses in this area over the years and this was a first. So appreciated! I was also thrilled to find 2 queen beds (most places have a ton of twins) and 2 full baths since we had my sister and brother-in-law stay with us. Shower off downstairs bedroom is small, but worked for us. Water pressure was good.

Everything was comfortable and clean. One down-side was a lack of space for clothes with just a small closet downstairs. Most of the dressers were full of linens/blankets. That said, I'd rather have the available blankets, and they can be removed from the drawers while you're there to make space for clothes.

My brother-in-law loved the dock and how easy it was to get in and out with his boat. The boat launch is also just a block or so away.

The one nice day we had to sit on the deck was a bit noisy with the bridge traffic, but overall our stay was very nice.

Claire responded promptly to my queries and was pleasant in our communications. We would stay here again.

Not worth the money

  • 2 of 5

There was no air conditioning nor any mention that there wasn't. I was recovering from a hip replacement so I could not get upstairs to the only bedroom that had a window air conditioner. One of the windows did not have a screen in it. The box fan in the downstairs bedroom that had no windows or any other form of circulation did not work. The bed was so uncomfortable, I spent the majority of the trip sleeping on the couch. The propane tank was empty, so fortunately we had only packed one meal that required grilling.

The decor had me flashing back to the 70's and could use some updating; although the rental was adequately stocked with just about anything you could possibly need.

Based on the above commentary, I can't see me using this rental in the future and I don't feel it was worth the money.

Owner's Response: We are very sorry that your experience was less than great! To your points: We never said we had air conditioning until we just added an upstairs heavy-duty "portable" unit -- which does vent through a window. Our amenities profile clearly notes this fact. We checked the box fan that you mentioned "did not work" and it is working for us. Perhaps it was plugged into a switched outlet? We also have 2 other vertical fans in the cottage for guest use. We try to ensure that the propane gas tank in the Weber BBQ is always full. Unfortunately, on occasion, someone leaves the valves open and gas escapes. We mention the closest tank exchange in our Guest Book and the fact that we reimburse for this expense. Also, we cannot control the weather ;-) We prefer to say our cottage is “in transition” style-wise as we move to mid-century furniture (including some antiques) and have recently purchased a leather couch and chair for the Living Room and a new organic mattress for the upstairs master bedroom. Our cottage is close to Bemus Point, has a private dock and large yard. We ensure that it is always stocked and well maintained. And, we care! We believe that our place offers great value and we look forward to welcoming future guests :) Claire & Andy

Great "ladies" weekend

  • 4 of 5

A small group of us stayed at the house for the weekend celebrating our 60th birthdays. It was perfect for us. The house was well stocked and practical, not super fancy, but a comfortable house right on the lake. We thoroughly enjoyed sitting out on the deck for breakfast and in between our outings. The house is just a short walk into town, which was great. We ate at Guppy's , Ellicottville Brewery, and the Lenhart Hotel--all great places with wonderful food. We visited all the Lucille Ball sights in Jamestown and also got to drive through the Chautauqua Institute for free since it was preseason. We all had a great time and loved your house. Thanks Claire!!

Clean and nicely appointed!

  • 5 of 5

Enjoyed our stay very much. The cottage is clean and nicely appointed. The kitchen was well stocked which made preparing meals easy. The kids enjoyed fishing off the dock and the paddle boat. Everything made for a memorable get away with family.

Claire is very responsive and easy to work with.

On waterfront, our private dock is a boating and fishing gateway to glorious Chautauqua Lake. The cottage is a short ¼ mile walk or bike to the Village of Bemus Point, New York with it’s coffee shop, golf course, park, restaurants, market, shops, and summertime floating entertainment stage. Local farm stands, Wegman’s market and fresh eggs are nearby.

Long Point State Park, the Chautauqua Institute, Midway Amusement Park, shopping in Lakewood (including Quilter’s Haven) and historic Jamestown are all within a 10 mile radius. Jamestown is birthplace to both birder Roger Tory Peterson and Lucile Ball and there are both nature and entertainment activities that mirror each.

Beaches at Presque Isle on Lake Erie, Allegheny State Park, zip-lining at Peek'n Peak, hot air balloons in Ashville and climbing Panama Rocks in nearby Olean, are a hop, skip & jump away. There are several wineries and local brewhouses, if you are so inclined.

Niagara Falls, museums and nightlife in Buffalo, Watkins Glen, the Erie Canal & Locks and the Finger Lakes can all be reached in a few hours or less.

In the winter, bring your snowmobile and enjoy local trails from your doorstep or skiing/ snowboarding/ cross country at nearby Peek'n Peak in Clymer. A favorite ice fishing spot is within view of cottage when the lake freezes over.
