Between the cities of Newcastle, Durham & Sunderland, easy to find location
I check the calender daily but this system doesn't always show this. I was born and breed locally, so I know the area reasonably well. The photograph above is me outside of Raby Castle, Co. Durham. I live not far from the cottage and know how easy it is to get around the area from Birtley. I took most of the photographs on this site in 2017 while I was out and about with family.
Anne purchased this House in 2012
Why Anne chose Chester le Street
Only our second year- 2019 Misty Valley Cottage is a Traditional Miner's Cottage in the heart of North East England. It is a cosy terraced cottage, perfect for a couple who want to get away from it all for a long weekend or even longer. It is situated very handily between Durham and the vibrant city of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. It is also a perfect base for exploring the north east and the attractions of Beamish Museum, the Roman town of Chester-le-Street, the iconic Angel of the North and the spectacular Northumberland Coastline are all within easy driving distance. For those who want to explore a little further, both Edinburgh and York are possible destinations for a day away. To the west is the incredible Lake District. There is on-street parking on the quiet road directly in front of the cottage. There is also a useful bike shed at the rear of the house for keen cyclists. The cottage has all of the amenities you'll need for an enjoyable and relaxing stay in this most historic part of England.
What makes this House unique
This cottage holds a Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence and an additional seven, 5* reviews on their site. As the weather changes, where possible I will have the cottage warmed for your arrival. This cottage has everything you need for a perfect stay in the North East including NETFLIX. It is so easy to find as the street is just off the A167, just off the A1M. The A167 is the main bus route between Newcastle to Durham, which can be every 7 minutes. You can use the Go North East App for live bus times. This part of England has been invaded many times this includes the Romans and later the Vikings. More recently Birtley became home to large number of refuges from Belgium during the Great War, so our local history has been long and varied.

What a 'Gem'. The 'flat' is immaculate. We couldn't have been more impressed, the owner has gone out of her way to make sure everything you would need is right there at your fingertips. The street is VERY quiet, it is next to an indoor swimming pool but it's blocked from view by tall bushes and all you can hear are the birds singing. Wish we'd had more time there to read some of the books Ann has on the local area and local heroes. Her photo's of Northeast landmarks show Anne's 'Geordie Pride', thankyou for sharing your home with an exiled Geordie & her 'Honorary' Geordie husband (he has the passport : ) We had a very good experience renting through Vrbo and would do it again …. THANKYOU !
Hi Angie and Ed,
Thank you for such a fabulos review of the cottage. You are very welcome and I would be very happy to have you both return.
Warm wishes across the seas.
Me and my husband stayed for 3 nights over the Easter break and had a wonderful time. The cottage is of an exceptionally high standard and very clean and tidy. I couldn't fault it. It had everything we needed for our stay and was perfectly located for our needs. We visited Beamish, Raby Castle, High force Falls and several eating places, all within a reasonable distance. I would very much recommend Beamish and Raby Castle.
The host Anne was exceptionally helpful and welcoming, and even made a special trip out to us when we couldn't figure out how to work the heating!! The biscuits, chocolate and milk that were left for us were very much appreciated. All in all it was a fantastic break and if we are ever heading north again we'll definitely be staying there.

Great location for touring north east England. Handy for shops and amenities. Beautifully decorated and comfortably furnished with an amazingly well equipped kitchen. We were delighted with the thoughtful welcome pack provided for our arrival-even to our preferred type of milk. Anne has thought of everything to make this a special place to stay. We highly recommend this home from home.
