We fell in love with this small, charming upstate hamlet 20 years ago. For a year, four of us looked for land outside New York City, wandering through all the counties looking for the elusive magic of a country home. We found those qualities in a tiny town of Cornwallville, in the Durham valley. We bought a house that is even more than we'd hoped.
When the house next door became free, we bought that too. Our rental house was a parsonage once. It's strong and practical, and we filled it with books and dishes and quickly made it a home. It's a perfect place for a weekend, a week, a summer.

Three of us own this house together: writer, filmmaker, gardner. We bought the house 28 years ago, on one of the most beautiful days any of us can remember.
Esther Cohen purchased this chateau / country house in 2000
We looked for a year at houses in New York State, in counties that were less than 3 hours from New York City. Our idea was that we wanted a place to escape, to retreat, to plant vegetables and flowers, to read and talk and walk and hike, and to invite as many people as we could to come and eat with us.
Oddly enough, New York State (many regions, not only ours) is astonishingly and unexpectedly beautiful. We have a porch, a light yellow porch, overlooking a long green field. That porch has been the inspiration for poem after poem (after poem).
A beautiful, very quiet location in the hamlet of Cornwallville. Location very convenient for exploring the Hudson Valley and Catskills, and across the river to the Berkshire hills. Esther and Bruce are very welcoming and helpful. The house has all the conveniences you will need to be self-sufficient, including a kitchen well stocked with utensils. The gardens are extensive and pretty, and our dogs had a ball on the grass! We had a great time.
Just what we needed to escape from work and the busy world in general. A place that feels like your other home, a place to relax and clear your mind. The house is old, the furniture could be from the same era. A perfect fit! Don't expect fancy but find yourself in a place where time slows down and daily stress fades away. We enjoyed breakfast on the porch, lunch in the backyard, dinner on the couch and evening drinks in the garden. We could explore the full property or sit with our neighbors. We felt at home during the whole week and didn't want to leave. Esther, Peter & Bruce took care of us and there was nothing to worry about. We'll be back!
Esther the owner is so kind and wonderful to work with. I didn't get to talk with her husband but I'm sure he is just as wonderful. This home is quaint and comfortable & full of character. . My family(husband and kids 12,12 &14) loved it. I don't ski & enjoyed going back to the house, relaxing & reading in the quiet...walking the property & watching netflix.! I highly recommend this home & location! Thank you for sharing it!
This is a nice little house outside but pretty specious inside. The house is very clean and warm. It has 4 bedrooms with double beds and there're even extra mattresses to accommodate more people if needed. The living room and the dining area are also good size. The house has everything you may need to spend a weekend or even a week. The kitchen as mentioned in other reviews is well stocked up. The house conveniently located 20 min short drive from Windham Mountain if you plan a winter gateway and 5 min away from Zoom Flume waterpark if you visit the area in the summer. The house doesn’t have cable TV but it has internet connection and a smart TV with preinstalled apps including Netflix. There’s a grill outside if you plan to BBQ.
The owners live in the house next door and even if they are not there they are always available via email or telephone if you need anything. The owners are very nice people and will always go extra mile to make your stay comfortable.
I had a group of 6 adults and 6 kids to celebrate New Years and everyone enjoyed the stay there. We will consider coming back to rent the house again. The only thing I would suggest the owners to get the microwave. But that’s just me.
i came here on two or three occasions after 2010. In the past couple of years I've been more in Central America which of course is itself a wonderful experience. But this little house - and not so little, we were sometimes sleeping 5! - had a world embracing quality so while you were surely surrounded by the natural pleasures of the Catskills, definitely one of the loveliest bits of country in the whole US, but you felt yourself ensconced in something classical, where a great writer might have written his greatest work, or a weary historian might have revivified her confidence in Mankind and the efficacy of action. Clean, uncluttered, but characteristic - you feel there have been characters here, who left that book behind or found that portrait and hung it, as thanks, on the wall. The owners are charming, helpful, but altogether unobtrusive - they have their own plans for the weekend, thank you. I can't wait to find the weekend that will bring me back here!
I joined a couple and their kids (two) for a ski weekend this winter, just before our big storm that dumped 10 inches of snow in nyc. We were going to ski Wyndam Ski Resort, which is a fast 15 minutes away from this house. Well - I didnt even want to go skiing - this house is super sweet with tons of room - I just wanted to hang out there. We had three kids, all under the age of 12, and they were forced to play cards with each other instead of ad nauseum wifi access for electronic game hysteria. The style of the house is eclectic aesthetically pleasing yard-sale finds, comfy throughout, tons of kitchen supplies, super nice views from upstairs bed windows, great books and magazines about, everything one needs to get back to basics, stop looking at your cell, etc. Two local dogs, the nicest cutest ever, came by regularly for some TLC. Im going back, again and again.
An organic farm's a mile away, and so is a small and interesting local historical society, a well-known water park, a game farm, and infinite paths for hikes
