About the property

2 double bedrooms, open-plan living room, kitchen, bathroom, sunny garden

Simple stone house and garden in quiet residential area. Bought and restored in late 2011. Two double bedrooms (upstairs) and ground floor living room, dining room, new kitchen, bathroom with bath and shower, separate WC. Private and sunny garden with BBQ. New sun-trap patio area for 2017.

Out of season long-term lets are welcome - please get in touch.

The house is in a quiet, residential area - just 20 minutes on foot to the centre of town, the daily food market, historical old town and old port. Supermarkets, bank and bakery are ten minutes on foot. A local cafe two minutes away. Free parking on street.

La Rochelle is lively all year round with restaurants, bars, waterfront cafes, a huge boating marina, cinemas and a lively cultural programme at La Coursive. There is an annual Film Festival and the week-long music festival Les Francopholies.

The house is well-placed for the airport and easy access to the road bridge to Ile de Re and its idyllic beaches.

The house has a steep staircase so not suitable for the elderly or for those with young children. The WC is on the ground floor.

About James Mavor

We are a relaxed, arty couple in our 50's. James teaches at Napier University and Jude teaches at the Royal Conservatoire of Music in Glasgow. We have two grown-up children and live between Edinburgh and France.

James Mavor purchased this house in 2011

Why James Mavor chose La Rochelle

We bought this house to live in, work in and take holidays when we can. It's a home more than a holiday place and one we hope to retire to.

What makes this house unique

We have friends in this quiet residential neighbourhood so when this house came up, we were quick to decide this was the one for us. It's easy to get into town but even easier to just stay put and relax in the cool of the house or the warmth and shade of the garden. La Rochelle is lively all year round - at its best in May/June and September/October but great fun in the busy summer months too. Easy to get to the Ile de Re by car or bus and only ten minutes to the house from the airport by taxi.

Fantastic return visit!!

  • 5 of 5

This property never fails to impress. Its location makes it an ideal place to explore La Rochelle and the surrounding areas. The owners have ensured that there is everything that you need. They maintain excellent contact from the minute you make the booking We have visited the property before & we will be looking to go again. Everything was clean , tidy and in excellent condition throughout. If you are going for the first time -stroll down to the port & visit the numerous excellent cafes & restaurants. Also drive out to Royan beach and stop for a bite to eat on the sea front.

Beautiful house

  • 5 of 5

We had the most wonderful holiday in this beautiful house. It was located 25 minutes walk into la rochelle and the owners left us lots of information on where to go and where to visit which was priceless. On days we wanted to relax the house provided everything we needed and enjoyed sitting in the garden and cooking in the large kitchen. We definitely will be back!

Very pleasant stay in this nice and cosy house

  • 5 of 5

The house was very clean and welcoming at our arrival. Everyday, we could easily park just in front of it. It was perfect for our young children thanks to it's safe garden we could watch from the kitchen or the living room. Even the stair were not such a big problem ! The is located in a quiet area of La Rochelle, away from road traffic, so we had a really nice journey in the city.

Moreover, James, the owner of the place, was really helping and nice to us from the booking till our departure. Go even eyes closed !

Great house, everything you need!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this lovely house for 2 weeks. It's in a very quiet area, only 20 mins walk into the centre - which has many great bars and restaurants (there is also a regular bus service). It has 2 large, airy, double bedrooms, lounge, dining area and a kitchen which is very well equipped. The cooker is fab, there are more kitchen utensils than you think of!! Large fridge / freezer. Lovely wooden floors throughout, bright, modern bathroom. 2 min drive to the supermarket (or 6/7 min walk). Lots to see and do. The garden is lovely, lots of sun and also lots of shade under the mulberry tree. We made great use of the BBQ, which was fully stocked of coals and wood. We would definitely recommend this house. Thank you James and Jude. Paul & Fiona

Owner's Response: Thanks Paul and Fiona - very happy you had a good stay. September/October are often the nicest time of year - much quieter but still nice and warm.

une charmante maison dans une ville superbe

  • 5 of 5
