Overview

About the property

Stylish 4 bedroom (all en suite) house in an exquisite secret garden with pool

One of Camps Bay’s original homes, Shell Cottage has been totally revamped into a superstylish four bedroom holiday house whilst still retaining its 'bohemian chic' beach-style character.

It is set right in the heart of the village, just one road back from the trendy buzz of the promenade...but step through your front gate and you'll find yourself in a secret haven of peace and tranquility, hidden away from the world. Timber boardwalks meander for 50m through the lushest garden imaginable filled with hibiscus, lavender and all sorts of flowers and scents. Floating timber decks overhung by a giant Persian Lilac tree are surrounded by views of the Twelve Apostles and Lions Head mountains.

Shell Cottage is very different from many of the ultra-modern steel, glass and concrete properties on the Atlantic Seaboard, as it offers a lovely sense of privacy and space. Most people say that they immediately feel at peace, and at home, in this stylishly architecturally renovated gem, filled with beauty inside and out.

More about the house: Shell Cottage is a home that has been created with a lot of care and attention to detail, giving it real soul. A top architectural designer has renovated it into a superstylish home whilst retaining its beach cottage feel. Equipped to to the highest standard, it offers everything an international traveller may need in a self catering property, including wi-fi, satellite television, excellent security. It houses a collection of original art, quality furniture and many special pieces lovingly collected over time. Beds are dressed with white pure cotton linen and oversized soft cushion. The garden has many hidden treasures: there's a reflection pool guarded by a serene stone buddah, mosaiced stepping stones, crystals hidden amongst the foliage and, for the little ones to play on, a lifesize wooden sheep named Ma-aaa-ary!

Though fairly compact, the property feels spacious and airy as it enjoys a wonderful flow from outside to inside, and the care and attention to detail is evident. The lounge opens up completely onto the generous patio and pool deck, which overlooks the garden.

Each of the bedrooms is unique and stylishly designed, and all open either onto the garden or private courtyards. Each of the en-suite bathrooms has its own unique theme, with an emphasis on nature - sand textures, pebbles, mother-of-pearl, driftwood.

More about the fabulous location: one of the best things about Shell Cottage is its most desirable position - Camps Bay beachfront is very close; less than a 150m stroll from the front door down a palm lined walkway but, despite being so close to the buzz, the cottage suffers no noise due to its secluded panhandle location off The Drive, a quiet residential road.

The local tennis courts and play park are across the road, and within a few minutes’ walk you have access to in excess of 35 restaurants, a number of bars, a library, shops, and all the other amenities that Camps Bay offers.

Shell Cottage is a holiday house that appeals to all ages. Its single level design & enclosed garden suits families with young children or the elderly but its stylish design and great location, just behind the trendy sunset strip and the beach’s great surf break, make it a dream holiday location for a group of friends who want to have a fun holiday.

About Alison Preyer

I specialise in high end residential architecture and love to create homes that are a joy to live in. I purchased Shell Cottage in 2004 and have done extensive renovations, and continue to do so each year to make it better and better.

Because I own 4 other rental properties in Cape Town and Greece, and have renovated or built each one personally, and also had my own villa rental company, I believe I really do understand the needs of international travellers. I strive to make my guests' experience the absolute best it can be. After all, you've come all this way, and we want to you to love Shell Cottage and Cape Town, and come back again and again!

Why Alison Preyer chose Atlantic Seaboard

Simply this: just about everybody who stays here absolutely loves this house. Many people return year after year and occupancy is close to 100%.

What makes this house unique

So close to the beach yet so very private and serene, set in the most beautiful garden with lovely mountain views. Absolutely no traffic noise, very secluded, completely secure. A very happy home.

Perfect location with all needed comforts provided.

  • 5 of 5

This was an overall great experience. The location of the house could not have been more perfect with access to everything. The living area opened out to the most gorgeous garden with pool and provided peace, seclusion and ambience while still having full security. The owner Alison was fab and accesssble if needed. The daily housekeeper was a very lovely lady named Privilege and she could not have been more helpful. I loved that each room has its own bathroom and all towels and lnens etc were spotless. I would highly recommend this property and cannot wait to return.

Fantastic place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

Shell Cottage is beautiful and was the perfect lodging for a recent girls trip to Cape Town. Close to restaurants and shopping, and we felt totally safe just walking around. The owner was extremely helpful in booking and getting us settled in. I hope to book another stay sometime in the future and definitely recommend this place.

Capetown Gem

  • 5 of 5

Fantastic place on every level: awesome location, just 1.5 blocks to both the beautiful beach of Camps Bay, as well as a great 2-3 block stretch of restaurants and cafes/shopping. Also, it's a short cab ride to the base of both Table Mountain and Lion's Head, the 2 big must-see mountains of Capetown that look over the property (as well as the "12 Apostles," a range of mountains that are directly behind the beach at Camps Bay, where the house is located).

The house itself is exquisitely decorated, and well-designed in terms of maximizing every inch of its space into a comfortable, if snug, 4br experience (including having full bathrooms for each of the bedrooms). The owner is super nice and accomodating. Honestly I can't think of a better place to stay if you are visiting Capetown.

A beautiful, welcoming home away from home.

  • 5 of 5

My family absolutely loved staying at Shell Cottage. Unlike many vacation rentals, this place has got soul! You can feel that a huge amount of love and care has gone into the creation and maintenance of this beautiful home, from the lush garden (seemingly rare in Camps Bay homes) to the carefully-selected décor that gives each room its own distinct look and feel. You are literally a 2-minute walk from the beach, but the peaceful garden and shaded pool area are so enticing you often have to remind yourself to leave the house and go explore other parts of Cape Town! At the end of a day spent exploring the city or lounging on the beach, there is no better place to return home to than Shell Cottage.

Camps Bay is the jewel in the crown of one of the world’s most beautiful cities, Cape Town. Set against the impressive backdrop of the Twelve Apostles mountain range, this spectacular bay comes with as near perfect a beach as you'll find anywhere, to suit veryone.

A massive expanse of fine, soft sand forms a sugarwhite crescent around a bay that varies from pale turquoise to petrol blue, depending on the depth and the weather. On the left there are sealife-filled rockpools for kiddies to paddle in safely and gentle swimming, on the far right is surfers' paradise. Palm trees on the periphery shade a promenade just made for jogging, strolling or chilling.

Local life is casual and vibrant; residents & holiday makers can be found enjoying sundowners at the many chic sidewalk cafés on the beachfront. It's no wonder that Camps Bay is the place of choice for some of the country's wealhiest homeowners.

Golf: There is a small urban golf course on the seaside about 5km from Camps Bay, just before the Waterfront. Slightly further afield there is a wonderful selection of courses, from cliffside links to undulating winelands courses, or challeging courses set in magnificently mountainous scenery.
