About the property

This stunning conversion combines many features of the original farm with modern comfort.

The colombage (timber & brick) façade of the original house has been retained. A spacious living area has been created where animals once lived. The cedar-lined roof is a striking feature, seen from the lounge / dining area and kitchen and forming the ceilings of the upstairs bedrooms. A bridge gives access to the mezzanine and south bedroom, its glass-panelled surround giving views through the house.

The three downstairs bedrooms are traditionally furnished, quiet and characterful. The downstairs pool shower is accessible for wheelchairs - please discuss access fully during booking.

The home cinema is upstairs. Bring your own DVDs, and your own music.

The 'old kitchen' has a good collection of books. Please tell our 'femme de ménage' if you take one away to finish.

Outdoor meals can be taken on the back veranda or in the front courtyard. The barbecue is portable.

Dijon, Cluny, Geneva, specialities and wine!: In addition to the towns mentioned above, Halfway House is only an hour from Dijon.

Dijon has numerous museums, most famously the Musée des Beaux-Arts. It has beautiful churches and civic buildings and the Jardin botanique de l'Arquebuse. Dijon holds its International and Gastronomic Fair every year in autumn. It also hosts, every three years, the international flower show 'Florissimo'.

The house is an hour from Tournus and about an hour and a quarter from Bourg en Bresse. Cluny would take an hour and a half, through the Macon wine country.

We can advise on visits to the South Burgundy vineyards, and tell you where you can eat and sample half bottles of the local wines with your meal.

During August there are a number of events in Bresse that take place at night and teach about the stars.

It takes only two hours to drive to Geneva.

Don't fail to visit the speciality shops: chocolate (Pierre and Louhans), high fashion leather (Pierre), and cheese (Bellevesvre).

More about the Jura Mountains: The monks who built Cluny lived previously at Baumes-les-Messieurs in the Jura, and a trip to this ancient priory in its remote and spectacular setting is a highlight of any visit. Children will love the cavern and waterfall in this amazing valley. This can be coupled with a trip to the hill-top town of Château Chalon with its glorious views. Nearer home, for children there is the Château at Arlay where each afternoon in the summer there is a falconry display.

Further into the mountains, Arbois and Poligny are well worth a visit. A slightly longer journey will take you to Arc-et-Senans, a world renowned historical site.

The Lakes of Chalain and Vouglans offer many delights for children (an hour and a quarter’s drive).

More things to do at Halfway House: In the huge barn (hangar) you will find a basketball net, dart board and various other games to play. A badminton net and rackets are in the store room.

In the garden is a big swing set (children only, sorry).

You are welcome to pick some flowers, and fruit if ripe – plums, grapes, cherries, apples & mirabelles.

Hares, red squirrels and many birds, including a golden oriole, have been seen, and a nightingale is often heard.

You are welcome to use the Bread Oven (though please be careful). It needs to be heated by burning logs for an hour or so, and we suggest cooking home-made pizzas straight on the brick floor. They taste delicious. While the oven is heating up, you could play petanque in the large courtyard.

We strongly recommend swimming at night with the pool light on. Stargazing with truly dark skies is also a must.

Fairs, markets and 'vide-greniers' (when whole villages turn out their attics) are frequent and fun.

Comfortable, homely and relaxed

Spacious and very comfortable, there's plenty of room to do things together or spend quiet time on your own. Very well stocked with crockery and those kinds of fixtures. A great library of books (and DVDs, though we didn't ever make use of them). Well-positioned with regards to supermarkets, a great little bakery and lots else besides.

great stay at the halfway house

The house is perfect for a family or friends reunion! Vintage style mix with modern appliance. Beautiful garden and nice pool when the weather is hot...(not our case undortunately) the environnement is perfect for relaxing or discovering bourgogne. Supermarket fews kilometers away.

Even a big screen for movie times if some rain. There is also 2 highchairs and 2 baby cribs.

Do not hesitate to go there!

And the plus: the british owner is really nice, easy to communicate with and the couple to welcome ys was lovely and helpfull. We will definitively keep the adress for our next friends reunion!

Our family holiday 2017

The property was perfect for our large family ranging from three months to sixty years old. We were lucky with the weather so could take full advantage of the pool and garden but we also had several evenings in the house cooking dinner and playing games. The facilities were great, I just wish we'd had more time to enjoy them, we didn't even use the upstairs cinema we were too busy. I think we may have to stay there again. The local restaurant was lovely and the staff were very helpful especially with our disabled son.

Picturesque, peaceful, rural idyll

The property has been very well converted from a barnhouse with the old and new parts in harmony with each other. It's spacious, well thought out and well stocked, whether you want to sit and read the days away, watch films at night, or prefer to make use of the kitchen in creating some seriously delicious meals. The local produce is outstanding - Bresse chickens are for sale from a local farmer just 1km away (they sell out fast) or from several fabulous local markets - I recommend taking the time (not that much time) to make poulet de Bresse au vin jaune et aux morilles. Which means you have to go tasting the local vineyards' vin jaune...and vin de paille, and cremant, and... Also take the time to make pizza dough and use the pizza hut - the results are well worth it! The grounds of the farmhouse are spacious and beautiful, with wildflowers to attract the butterflies around the pool - a well needed resource in the hot summer sun. And the people in the village and the surrounding region are really friendly. We fell in love with the house and with Jura. We'll be back!

Vacances fantastiques !

La semaine c'est très bien passée dans cette très agréable maison, un corps de ferme vraiment bien refait. Le (très) Grand jardin permet de passer la journée dehors sans problème, et de profiter de la piscine. Petit plus: la maisonnette à pizza (Pizzahut) pour faire des pizza en commandant les pâtons chez le boulanger du village - Parfait !

Excellent séjour, je recommande chaudememnt !

Herrliche Ferien in charmantem Bauernhaus

Das Anwesen war ein richtiger Glücksfall für uns. Wir verbrachten dort unsere Familienferien (6 Erwachsene und 4 Kleinkinder) und hätten uns hierfür keine schönere Kulisse vorstellen können. Die Reservierung, Bezahlung und Hausübernahme verlief ohne Probleme. Wir wollten kleinere Ausflüge machen, doch das wunderbare Schwimmbad, der Pizzaofen und der Esstisch unter schattigen Bäumen sind so verlockend, dass wir uns entschieden, einfach "zu Hause" zu bleiben und zu genießen. Wir würden allen Freunden und Verwandten raten, in diesem Juwel die Ferien zu verbringen, etwas Schöneres ist kaum zu finden.

Halfway House is on the edge of the quiet, attractive village of La Chapelle St Sauveur with its boulangerie, tennis court , petanque area, bar & baignade (eco swimming lake). Supermarkets are nearby, but also lovely villages with specialist butchers and cheese and antique shops.

The house is 3 miles from the beautiful château at Pierre de Bresse with its exhibitions and events, and the international high-fashion leather shop Chateau Noirot, and four miles from the River Doubs for canoeing and wildlife walks.

Half an hour to Beaune with its Hospice, arty Chalon, medieval Dole, and Louhans' famous Monday market. Half an hour to Lons le Saunier and the edge of the Jura mountains - the Jura's beautiful waterfalls and caves, ancient priories, and lakes with quiet beaches are within easy striking distance. One hour to the Burgundy vineyards.

The journey from Calais can take less than 6 hours, all except the last 20 miles being on uncrowded motorways.

Golf: Chapelle Voland is a 9 hole par 31 course 6 miles from La Chapelle St Sauveur. 20 Euro/day. Open April to October.
