Palmela is a Portuguese village belonging to the District of Setúbal, Lisbon region and sub-region of the Península de Setúbal, with about 19,500 inhabitants. Its maximum altitude is 378 meters, measured in the hill where the Castle is located. Find in the sub-region of Metropolitan Area of Lisbon.

It is the seat of a municipality with 465.12 km ² of area and 62 831 inhabitants (2011), subdivided into 4 parishes. The municipality is limited to the north by the municipalities of Benavente and Alcochete, to the northeast by the eastern portion (exclave) of the municipality of Montijo, to the east by Vendas Novas, to the southeast by Alcácer do Sal, to the south by Setúbal, to the west by Barreiro and northwest by Moita and the western portion (main area) of the municipality of Montijo.

The presence of the Man in the region that today is occupied by the municipality of Palmela goes back to the Upper Neolithic period, where its presence is very noticeable, especially during the bell-shaped culture, and whose testimony was left to us in the form of the world-known Palm of Palmela. Occupied by Celts, Romans and Arabs, all found in this territory a strategic place to settle.

In 1147 it was conquered by D. Afonso Henriques, granting him a charter in 1185. But the golden period of Palmela can be located in the first years of Nationality, when Palmela was the key of the territory between the Sado and the Tagus. This strategic importance is due to conjunctural political and religious aspects related to the process of conquest and consolidation of the Portuguese State, and of which the Order of Santiago and Espada (which received Palmela as a donation of D. Afonso Henriques around 1172), can not be separated.

The Order of Santiago marks its presence in the Portuguese society for being a lady of a vast territory that went from the old municipality of Riba Tejo (that includes the present municipalities of Barreiro, Moita, Montijo and Alcochete) until Mértola, in the Low Alentejo. The administrative power of the Order is centered in Palmela "already in the time of the Infante D. João, son of D. João I".

The importance of this choice was not only due to the proximity of Palmela to Lisbon, where the congregation held the convent of Santos, among others, but also due to the fact that Palmela is the largest Commenda of the Order and the characteristics of its castle, large, with capacity to house the monumental assembly of the Order - the Convent and the Church. Once the dangers of the invasions - Arab, initially, and Castilian, in a later time - the Order of Santiago begins to lose the importance and the power that had. Along with her, Palmela also no longer has the role of advanced guardian, a role played previously by the former headquarters of the Order - Mértola and Alcácer do Sal.

After the extinction of the Military and Religious Orders, Palmela no longer had any type of importance, neither strategic, nor economic, nor political, to such an extent that the Administrative Reform of Mouzinho da Silveira in 1855 extinguished its municipality by integrating it into the of Setubal, where it will remain until 1926. Taking advantage of the military movement resulting from May 28, 1926, local elites pressure the Military Junta to access the restoration of the municipality of Palmela, a fact that is consummated in November of that same year.
