Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday cottage in Torxé - Joie de Vivre

Lovely tranquil home near river and farm, close to coast and attractions

Please note that the changeover day is FRIDAY. Relax and unwind in this lovely rural house, surrounded by rolling hills, a farm and fields of sunflowers, maize and vines. With very little traffic, your own above ground pool and friendly and unobtrusive neighbours you'll have plenty of time to chill and to make the most of your holiday.

Guests who have stayed in the house have said they love the peaceful setting and the fact that the house has its own pool, just for you, that you can use any time you like. Situated between the lively and historic port of La Rochelle and the beautiful vineyards of Cognac, and near the charming town of St Jean D'Angely, it is surrounded by interesting attractions in all directions, allowing you to have days out at great beaches and resorts. The lovely seaside resorts of the Gironde and Atlantic coast are not far away, and it’s easy to get to lovely beaches such as La Palmyre, Fouras and St Palais sur Mer and beautiful towns such as La Rochelle, Saintes and Cognac. The fascinating holiday islands of the Ile de Re, Ile D'Oleron and Ile D'Aix are close by and make for great days out, and our local town, St Jean D'Angely, has lovely restaurants, shops and a wonderful twice-weekly market.

Guests have said they love the house too, and the fact that it has everything you need. Joie de Vivre is a pretty, spacious two-bedroom cottage, sleeping 5 people. It’s in a small hamlet close to the River Boutonne, and is on a no-through road, so is very quiet and safe for children.

The house is modern and well-equipped, with traditional beams and stone walls plus a light, bright interior. It has an open-plan layout downstairs, with the lounge leading onto a sunny patio which is south facing and gets sunshine most of the day.

The two bedrooms both have stone walls and wooden beams - one large room overlooking the patio, a barn and fields with a king size bed, and another smaller bedroom with a double bed. An extra single bed in the main bedroom, a sofa bed downstairs and some fold-up beds make it easy to vary sleeping arrangements for families, and there is a travel cot for babies and toddlers.

If you want to relax at home there's everything you need, including an outside dining table, 18'5' x 12'6' heated swimming pool, barbeque, sun-loungers, swing chair and sun umbrellas. You can explore the surrounding hills, fields and farm, cycle by the river or read books from the house library. The house has all you will need for an enjoyable holiday - computer, Wifi, DVDs, traditional games, books, maps, English TV, i-Pod, hairdryers, microwave, washing machine, dishwasher, travel cot, high chair, 7 bikes, including one child's bike, and toys. There are no hidden costs - the price of your holiday includes cleaning, utilities, pool maintenance in season and use of bedding and towels.

About Lindsey and Peter Sharp

Peter and Lindsey formerly lived in the New Forest and moved to the Tamar Valley in Cornwall in 2015. Peter is a psychologist and management consultant and Lindsey is a writer and journalist. They have two grown up daughters.

Lindsey and Peter Sharp purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Lindsey and Peter Sharp chose Charente-Maritime

We love Joie de Vivre and the Charente Maritime and enjoy it when our guests have happy holidays there too. We found the house on the internet and loved it as soon as we saw it. We were not familiar with the Charente Maritime before, but are amazed by how much there is to do there - every time we visit we discover something new and exciting. We also like the fact that the Charente Maritime seems like the 'real' France and is not overly chic and snooty like some other tourist destinations can be. The people are also very friendly and welcoming.

We love the setting for the house because it is so quiet and peaceful. Our guests tell us they enjoy the tranquility, the farm with its fields of sunflowers and cows, the cycle rides by the river, and the fact that it is very easy to get to lots of interesting places from the house, such as beaches, markets and lovely restaurants. Children and families really enjoy having their own pool (and we built the new one in 2013) and all the nearby attractions. Guests say the house is lovely and several say it is the best-equipped they've stayed in. Check out the wonderful reviews below and the house guestbook feedback to find out more. We hope you'll enjoy a warm welcome and relaxed stay at Joie de Vivre.

What makes this cottage unique

Apart from the lovely house, peaceful location and ease of access to all the resorts and attractions, we think it's important for guests to feel comfortable and relaxed in a holiday home, and to be able to travel light. So we provide as much as possible in the house for you to use. We want our guests to have a really enjoyable holiday at Joie de Vivre and we do our best to make it lovely for them. Mel looks after our house, and helps guests when needed, and we have friendly neighbours too. See http://joiedevivreholidays.me for more photos and information.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Beautiful home and location. Perfect holiday!

  • 5 of 5

We booked this property as our first family holiday to France. Communication from the start was easy, and Lindsey was quick to respond with valuable information about the house and area, which was really useful. The house was very well equipped and exactly as described. It had everything we needed and more. It really is a beautiful home, and felt very warm and welcoming. The nice touches like the wine on arrival and toy gifts for our kids (3 &7) did well to settle my travel nerves.

The property was spotlessly clean and is well looked after and maintained. You really feel like you are stepping into a well loved home, rather than a holiday let.

The house is set in a small hamlet of houses, which feel so rural and secluded, perfect for a bit of peace and quiet. We met the immediate French neighbours (Pauline and Denis), who were really friendly and helpful.

The house is perfectly situated for visits around the charente maritime area. We visted St Savinien and the kids loved the park and boating lake. We spent an afternoon in Saintes and took a boat ride up the river, we went to Il d'Oleron and took the petite train castle tour, and had a lovely lunch in the port area. We also visted St Jean D-Angley, and all enjoyed the local market. We tried not to do too much, as the point of our holiday was a little rest and relaxation, but our days pretty much consisted of morning pool time at the house, with an afternoon vist, then more pool time on our return.

The house really is idyllic, and gives you a flavour of French rural life. The distant sound of the cows and chickens from the farm, together with the beautiful starry skies will always be a special memory. It was perfect for taking some time out together as a family, slowing down, and reconnecting. Thank you so much. Nina and family. xx

Top up your happiness

  • 5 of 5

The charming Joie de Vivre is a fantastic antidote for a stressful life and will top up your happiness levels if you're feeling fragile. I took my recently diagnosed diabetic brother and he says this holiday was one of the things that gave him the confidence to carry on living life to the full. We flew from Southampton and hired a car - it was simple. The short drive, ending in a snake through the beautiful French farmland, adding to the magic of this heavenly hideaway. The house is gorgeous; full of character, beautifully clean and with every thing you need. To begin with we stayed close by, using the bicycles for lovely rides along the river and buying the local pastries. We also spent lazy days by the pool, listening to the birds. There are good supermarkets close by so we were able to take advantage of the french food without much effort. When we did venture out it was well worth it. We visited local beaches and took a trip to Cognac. This was a gorgeous holiday. You really can do as much or as little as you fancy. It's a perfect little enclave and there is no-one who couldn't benefit from staying here. We will definitely be topping up our happy levels with another trip over and celebrating our Joie de Vivre. Cheers!

Lovely House and Location

  • 5 of 5

Lovely house, tastefully decorated, homely and comfortable. I went for peace and quiet and got it! Loved the local area too and St Jean d'Angely is a lovely medievil town with market, restaurants, shops and of historical interests too. Broadband in the house allowed me to work - technology is good sometimes! But most of the time I just chilled, watering the plants and herbs, taking advantage of the pook, as well as watching the birds, and in particular the Little Owl in the roof - fascinating. Thank you Lindsey and Peter for allowing me to enjoy your little corner of France.

Wow What a Lovely House!

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic two weeks at Joie de Vivre!

The house was clean and so well equipped, we wanted for nothing. The setting is lovely for peace and quiet and a bit of wildlife spotting. The pool was very welcome on hot days and the neighbours very friendly and helpful.

We loved the local town, Saint Jean D'Angeley with it's lovely old town and restaurants but also the convenience of supermarkets on the outskirts.

Lindse , the owner, could not have been more helpful and thorough with her advice and her communication was second to none!

We will definitely be making a return trip to this gorgeous house in the future!

Wonderful little house!!!!

  • 4 of 5

Thanks to Lindsey and Peter-les aimables propriétaires!!!!!

Pleasure to holiday here

  • 5 of 5

We returned for our second visit to Joie de Vivre and once again had a wonderful time. Both the house and area have so much to offer. Beautiful beaches, our favourites at St Palais sur Mer and Fouras. La Rochelle and its amazing Aquarium. The Roman Ampitheatre at Saintes is a must visit. We attended an evening concert, inside of it, with the Orchestre Symphonique D'Elves and Grand Choer de l' Abbaye-aux-Dames. The Ile d'Oleron (visit the Chassiron lighthouse) and Ile de Re are well worth a visit for the day. The list is endless.

The house has a lovely relaxing atmosphere and the bonus of a pool. It's very well equipped with all the practical items as well as books, dvd's, candles etc.

A massive thank you once again to the owners, Lindsey and Peter, for sharing this first class holiday home - a true home from home.

The decor is light, bright, clean and modern, with original beams and stone walls. The house has a sunny aspect and a relaxed, comfortable ambiance. It is well stocked with all the utensils and facilities you will need for a happy and relaxing holiday. The hamlet is very tranquil and has only around 10 houses, some occupied all year round and some holiday homes, so you will have plenty of peace and quiet. The English and French neighbours are also friendly and unintrusive. The house is a traditional cottage with an open layout downstairs, and the semi-open stairway may be unsuitable for the infirm. Please note that there are also some low beams upstairs. There is a log burning stove and radiators, making it cosy for winter. Our guests have been very complimentary about the house, facilities, peaceful location and ease of access to attractions. There is little traffic as the house is on a quiet, no through lane leading to a cow barn with cows, fields and the river. English TV.
