Description

Photos and Description of this 1 bedroom holiday cottage in Saint-Georges-Montcocq - La Capelle

Comfortable one bedroom cottage in rural setting

Beautiful cottage conveniently located close to amenities and local attractions yet away from it all in the countryside. The accommodation is a converted stable of stone and lime walls with beamed ceilings. There is one large bedroom upstairs with modern ensuite shower and toilet facilities. Downstairs there is a large, comfortable living room/fitted kitchen. There is also a washing machine. Wireless broadband internet available. Outside the front garden has cottage style flower beds backed up by parkland, trees and sheep. Plenty of parking space.

La Capelle is an English owned traditional French longhouse. It was occupied by the Germans during the war, and shelled by the Americans to get them out. A long period of neglect followed. We have been renovating for a number of years with the intention of becoming as self sufficient as possible. The gardens are obviously very important and we have produced most of our own organic fruit and veg for several years. We also make most of our bread by hand and butter, jams, jellies, chutneys, ice-cream, country wines and fudge. Some of the home made products are available to be purchased. Fresh raspberries, strawberries, gooseberries are available in season, fresh farm eggs etc. The cottage has been carefully converted from an old stable. It is a clean and comfortable base from which to see the local attractions or just relax and enjoy the tranquility of the countryside.

St-Lo is a lively market town which sits serenely within the remains of the ancient ramparts looking down over the river with its flower covered bridges. There are chestnut trees in the streets and the roundabouts are a work of art in flowers! within the walls there are pavement cafes and restaurants abound. On Friday there is a farmers market and Saturday there is a market selling everything from fresh lobster to peacocks. On the outskirts there are reclamation yards and 'junk' shops to search through as well as sports facilities, garden centres and shops of every description. Within 30 min of the town there are chateaus to visit or parks and gardens to enjoy. There are well marked cycle paths from the town into the countryside, with picnic spots on the way. There are theatres and cinemas and so much more. Christmas time is especially beautiful when the whole town is decorated with silver lights.

Beyond the town: St-Lo is quite centrally situated between so many areas of interest. The D-Day landing beaches with numerous museums, Le Mont St Michel, a must see 'Hogwarts' style ancient monastry rising out of the sea, the fascinating Bayeux tapestry with attached museum. Bayeux is a very pretty town with great shopping and dining opportunities. The little seaside town of Barfleur is a favourite for young families. It is so pretty and has a lovely beach with a smooth rocky area with clear pools for shrimping. During the summer, just 20 min from La Capelle there is a Hippodrome where the French take their families to enjoy the horse racing and fireworks, it makes a very enjoyable family evening out. France is famous for it's chateaus and there are lots of them open to the public in this area.

Simply perfect

  • 5 of 5

This was a last minute decision for us to have a short break and after reviewing online I was so glad that we managed to book in to this fantastic gite.

Everything was clean and tidy, the location was perfect, the hosts Sam, Alan and young Marcus were very attentive and their home made goodies were to die for!!

We will be returning for a longer visit next year as we were so relaxed and chilled that we didn't get to explore the surrounding area - but this goes to show how peaceful this place is.

Thank you for a fantastic time

Wonderful relaxed place!

  • 5 of 5

We booked La Capelle on the recommendation of my sister in law who had stayed previously. We found it exactly as she told us, relaxed, central for touring, and great hosts in Alun,Sam and family.

We toured various places, as well as having days in, and with the weather being very kind, it was a very relaxing and enjoyable stay. We would have no hesitation in recommending La Capelle, and we hope to return again in the future.

Exceptional!

  • 5 of 5

We expected a quiet, rural setting, friendly hosts, comfortable accommodations and we received more than we expected. Samantha and Alun make you feel right at home as soon as you arrive. We stayed for 3 weeks and enjoyed every minute, whether it be exploring the country side, relaxing at the cottage or visiting the gardens and the animals. The location is convenient to St Lo and very close to a small market and boulangerie. The premises are spotless!

A lovely surprising place!

  • 5 of 5

A fantastic location in Normandy for the D-Day beaches, Mont Saint Michel and Bayeux. La Capelle is set amongst wonderful French farm land and a warmer welcome you simply could not ask for. Sam and Alun will try to do whatever they can to make your stay a happy one. The cottage was well equipped and was perfect for ourselves and our 7 year old boy. We hardly saw our son as he was so busy feeding the sheep, geese and hens or picking the endless fruit. He loved the farm so very much it was difficult to drag him off home!! The local town St-Lo has everything you could wish for and the local dandelion wine made by Alun was an amazing treat and the home baked goodies by Sam were to die for. We would heartily recommend this place and would love to stay again.

Owner's Response: Oh thankyou for this lovely review. I had such fun digging the potatoes with Josh and laughing as he raided the strawberry patch. His pleasure in finding so many edible things growing in the garden was a joy to share. I am so glad you all enjoyed your stay. We enjoyed your company too. I shall look forward to hopefully seeing you all again one day.

A Wonderful Place to Stay!

  • 5 of 5

We had a most relaxing stay at La Capelle! It was a very beautiful setting...a wonderful property in the middle of the french Normandy countryside. Alun and Sam are very hard workers and have restored/renovated their farmhouse in a wonderful manner that respects the heritage of the building. Our hosts were exceedingly welcoming and we felt very comfortable with them. Every amenity you could want was there, from wifi to stove to TV, but in a serene and bucolic setting. The location is indeed excellent and proved central to many local sites of interest, including Mt. St. Michel, the Normandy beaches and the Bayeux Tapestry. It was also very convenient for getting to the ferry to the Channel Islands. We are very glad we chose this spot and would love to return some day!

Excellent accommodation

  • 5 of 5

This was an amazing place for us to stay. It was very well equipped with everything we could have possibly needed and was spotlessly clean. It was nice to stay somewhere where the owners were on site. The welcome goodies were very thoughtful..The bread making lesson was a real inspiration.

The gite is a short drive from St Lo and is a very good base for getting out and about. We went to see the Bayeux Tapestry, Monets gardens ( quite a long drive, but well worth it) , also handy for Mont St Michel and D Day landings.

We were sad to leave the gite, the animals and especially Sam, Alun, Marcus and Toby. I would recommend La Capelle to any couple wanting a base to go out and about or for just a relaxing time.

Owner's Response: Thankyou both for all your kindness. 'Ginger Little' the kitten is still playing with the ball of wool! I'm always pleased when our guests enjoy their holiday. It's especially nice when our guests arrive as strangers and leave as friends. Good luck with the baking. Try Chelsea buns or Lardy cake one day! Our best wishes, keep in touch. Sam and family.

St-Lo was one of the most devasted towns in France during the liberation of World War 2. Now it is a bustling market town, nestled within ancient city walls. La Capelle is a traditional French farmhouse conveniently situated just one hours drive from the ports of Caen and Cherbourg and only 45 min from the Normandy D Day landing beaches. Le Mont St Michel and Bayeux with it's fascinating tapestry are also within an hours drive. The cottage is surrounded by over 8 acres of organic fruit and veg gardens. There are sheep and lambs, chickens, ducks and 4 working cats. Here you can quite literally taste 'the good life' as a hamper is provided for your arrival containing wine, fresh hand made bread and jam and seasonal produce. This is perfect cycling and walking country with many designated paths, ideal for picnic lunches or barbecues in the garden. Dogs and horses welcome by prior arrangement. Coming soon, camping in the orchard.

Other Activities: The National Haras in St-Lo Equestrian Centre of Normandy or pick your own soft fruits of the season here on the farm. (Family and guests only)!
