Beautiful cottage conveniently located close to amenities and local attractions yet away from it all in the countryside. The accommodation is a converted stable of stone and lime walls with beamed ceilings. There is one large bedroom upstairs with modern ensuite shower and toilet facilities. Downstairs there is a large, comfortable living room/fitted kitchen. There is also a washing machine. Wireless broadband internet available. Outside the front garden has cottage style flower beds backed up by parkland, trees and sheep. Plenty of parking space.
La Capelle is an English owned traditional French longhouse. It was occupied by the Germans during the war, and shelled by the Americans to get them out. A long period of neglect followed. We have been renovating for a number of years with the intention of becoming as self sufficient as possible. The gardens are obviously very important and we have produced most of our own organic fruit and veg for several years. We also make most of our bread by hand and butter, jams, jellies, chutneys, ice-cream, country wines and fudge. Some of the home made products are available to be purchased. Fresh raspberries, strawberries, gooseberries are available in season, fresh farm eggs etc. The cottage has been carefully converted from an old stable. It is a clean and comfortable base from which to see the local attractions or just relax and enjoy the tranquility of the countryside.
St-Lo is a lively market town which sits serenely within the remains of the ancient ramparts looking down over the river with its flower covered bridges. There are chestnut trees in the streets and the roundabouts are a work of art in flowers! within the walls there are pavement cafes and restaurants abound. On Friday there is a farmers market and Saturday there is a market selling everything from fresh lobster to peacocks. On the outskirts there are reclamation yards and 'junk' shops to search through as well as sports facilities, garden centres and shops of every description. Within 30 min of the town there are chateaus to visit or parks and gardens to enjoy. There are well marked cycle paths from the town into the countryside, with picnic spots on the way. There are theatres and cinemas and so much more. Christmas time is especially beautiful when the whole town is decorated with silver lights.
Beyond the town: St-Lo is quite centrally situated between so many areas of interest. The D-Day landing beaches with numerous museums, Le Mont St Michel, a must see 'Hogwarts' style ancient monastry rising out of the sea, the fascinating Bayeux tapestry with attached museum. Bayeux is a very pretty town with great shopping and dining opportunities. The little seaside town of Barfleur is a favourite for young families. It is so pretty and has a lovely beach with a smooth rocky area with clear pools for shrimping. During the summer, just 20 min from La Capelle there is a Hippodrome where the French take their families to enjoy the horse racing and fireworks, it makes a very enjoyable family evening out. France is famous for it's chateaus and there are lots of them open to the public in this area.
