The Neighborhood:

At 6km away from the maisonette you will find PALEOKASTRTO VILLAGE located in the middle of Kouremenos bay. It’s a genuine authentic Cretan village, where there is no mass tourism. It can offer just what a village can do: A taste of simple life, tradition, friendly locals, and moments of pleasure. There are a lot of restaurants and the closest beaches is Chionia and Kouremenos, just 2 km from the town with pretty sandy beaches, drawing visitors for their clear waters, great diving, fresh seafood and wind-surfing. There is a wind-surfing school and club based here. The best season is from May to October, where the meltemi wind blows side shore from the left.

Paleokastro is surrounded by olive groves, grapevines and gardens in a hilly rugged part of the island. It gives a special character to the village and the beautiful bays. There are plenty of cafés serving good food, and a local kafenion. There is also a unique restored Cretan house fully refurbished and decorated as a folkloric museum that contains 20th Century artifacts and shows the traditional way of life of Crete.

Between the village and the bay is the ancient Minoan site of the township Roussolakkos. This township has been dated back to 2000 BC and was the second largest Minoan township after Knossos. So many beautiful pieces have been retrieved from the site that shows the activities and lifestyle of these ancient Cretans.

The property is located10 km from the port and the town of SITIA:

It is a thriving modern town, sitting on Sitia Bay, with a charm of its own and lots to see. It has a wonderful feel, as it is spic and span and spotless, with a brand new harbour for small craft and the large ferries that call in from the Dodecanese.

Looking about the town, you will find the ruins of Kazarma fortress on top of the hill. The name Kazarma derives from ‘Casa di Arma’ from the Venetian occupation. Now it is a ruin after an earthquake in 1508 and an attack from pirate Barbarossa in 1538.

Walking around the large harbour, along to the marina and further to the beach you will stroll along a wide promenade with lovely lanterns, lush palms, park benches and mosaics. All along the water’s edge are tavernas, restaurants and cafés. One of our favourites is The Balcony café for its vibe and local cuisine.

Visit the Archaeological Museum on Piskokefalou St and the local Folklore Museum at 28 Kapetan Sifinos St. Both hold keys to unravel the twisted history across the threads of time.

Sitia is lovely to visit, and makes a good base from which to explore eastern Crete.

Just 14 km from the village resort there is the unique and luscious VAI PALM FOREST which is the largest in Europe, with species found only in Crete. It is protected by the EU and is well worth the visit. Nestled into a valley behind a fresh water pond and creek, the palm forest is home to local birds and animals. The whole area has an abundance of natural beauty, remains of ancient civilizations, gorges, deserted beaches and mountains.

VAI BEACH is a spectacular tropical beach of fine sand and pebbles with clear, clean water, excellent snorkeling and plenty of room for everyone.

There are beach chairs and umbrellas to rent, and the nearby monastery runs a restaurant right on the beach which serves delicious traditional Greek food.

Windsurfing and jet-skiing are popular here, topless bathing is common and nudist bathing is popular at the south end of the beach.

Getting Around:

HOW TO GET AROUND:

The bus for Sitia, Palekastro, Vai, Zakros and Kato Zakros runs 2 -3 times per day and there is no service after the sunset. The bus stop is just 500m away.

For your nights out to restaurants and bars to either Sitia or Palekastro you will need to get a taxi or rent a car.

To Sitia by airplane:

As one of the most important market towns of Lassithi Prefecture, Sitia has a small airport with daily flights to and from Athens, and connections to Rhodes, Karpathos, Kassos and Aktio. There is also a limited number of charter flights to Sitia in the summer.

To Sitia by ferry:

If you are in Athens or one of the islands in the Dodecanese or the Cyclades, you can take the ferry to Sitia. There is a daily boat to and from Piraeus.

From the Athens Airport to Piraeus Port by bus:

You will find the bus when you leave the arrivals hall. Take bus X96, which takes you straight to the Port of Piraeus. During the day, there are buses leaving every 20 minutes, during the night, they run every half hour. Depending on the amount of traffic, the trip from the Airport to Piraeus Port may take between 60 - 90 minutes. The Port of Piraeus is about the last stop.

From the Athens Airport to Piraeus Port by taxi:

When you are looking for a bit more comfort you can also take a taxi from the airport to Piraeus. When leaving the airport, there is a taxi queue next to Door 3 of the Arrivals Level. Taking a taxi is usually quicker than the bus (dependent on the traffic) and the ride takes about 30/45 minutes.

Other Things to Note:

GREAT TIP:

There is a surfing community and caravan camp on the beach of Kouremenos and a fishing boat in the marina at the end of the beach, where every morning fishermen return from fishing overnight and you can go to buy fresh fish from the boats.
