Mabel's is a delightful self-catering cottage for up to 4 people, nestled in the sleepy, chocolate-box village of Sydling St Nicholas, West Dorset. We offer an idyllic rural base, in one of England's most pictureseque counties with the World Heritage Jurassic Park coastline, fantastic walking countryside, award winning pubs ( one of the best being a hundred paces away in the village High Street), grand country houses, gardens and museums all within easy reach.
Stay a week or two and drink your fill of this lovely place, or come for a restorative long weekend, away from the hustle and bustle of daily life; we are open all year round. We are pet friendly and there are magnificent walks to be had without getting into your car, and dog-friendly beaches near by.
The cottage is tastefully furnished in country style. There are two bedrooms, both on the first floor; a double bedded master bedroom with brass and wrought iron bedstead, and a double aspected twin bedroom, with windows overlooking both the village high street and the lovely garden.
Downstairs there is a cosy sitting room, complete with log burning stove, TV, DVD and stereo system, as well as plentiful books, maps and games. A further multipurpose room (we use it to pause and put on our walking boots!) leads to a beautifully presented modern bathroom and the kitchen with its lovely outlook over the garden. In country style, you will find everything you would expect from a modern kitchen: including dishwasher and washing machine.
The garden is a delight, and much praised by our guests. With several seating areas including a picnic table, it is well tended, and offers a peaceful respite after a day's sight seeing. The village "Chalk Stream" meanders through the bottom of the garden; access to this is gated, but care is still needed with your little ones!
The village is home to an ancient church, a fantastic pub, and village green. The well equipped children's play area is a minute's walk away, and from the cottage you can climb up to the Wessex Ridgeway and the walking opportunities that this brings. The nearby villages of Cerne Abbas ( home to the famous "rude giant" hillside carving) and Maiden Newton are each a 5 minute drive away. Both provide a convenient spot to stock up on provisions, with village stores, pubs and petrol station. The market towns of Dorchester and Sherborne are 8 and 12 miles away respectively. West Bay ( the location for for the TV drama "Broadchurch") is around a half hour away, and you can be in Weymouth or Lyme Regis in under an hour; both make wonderful day trips.
